We continue our review of the watches that will be auctioned at Only Watch 2021, a biennial charity auction of luxury watches that brings together the best watchmakers to raise funds for research on Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Today, we are looking at the unique Krayon Anywhere Only Watch 2021 model, equipped with a prototype movement used to develop this special complication, and a beautiful Métiers d’Art style dial inspired by Claude Monet's painting Impression, Soleil Levant (Sunrise).
Krayon is a young independent watch brand that made a name for itself in 2017 by presenting a complex watch called Everywhere - the first wristwatch capable of displaying sunrise and sunset times for any location on Earth, with the ability to adjust the location using the crown! This impressive development earned Krayon a well-deserved industry award at the GPHG 2018 in the “Innovation Prize” category. In 2020, Rémi Maillat, the watchmaker and founder of the brand, introduced a relatively more “simple” version of the watch called Anywhere.
The Krayon Anywhere watch displays the duration of the day along with the sunrise and sunset times at your chosen location, anywhere in the world. Of course, there are other watches with similar functionality, but their location parameter is built-in: the cam is specially designed for a specific place on Earth. On the other hand, the Krayon Anywhere has an internal adjustment system. Even if the parameter cannot be inputted directly and requires adjustment by a watchmaker, it is still an interesting option if you move to another country or place and want your watch to be adapted.
For the Only Watch 2021 exhibition, Krayon created a special version of the model. First of all, this unique model is equipped with a prototype caliber that allowed the development of this complication and was carefully preserved by Rémi Maillat. The hand-wound movement, made of 432 components, is gorgeously decorated with complex angles, beautiful waves, polished jewel sinks, and much more... The prototype inscription is engraved on one of the bridges.
The watch is also adorned with a dial made in the métiers d’art style - a miniature painting inspired by Claude Monet's famous Impression “Soleil Levant.” Thanks to the champlevé art demonstrated by the master in bringing the shades and tones to life, this modern interpretation of the famous painting acquires a special value.
The Krayon Anywhere for Only Watch 2021 is presented in an elegant 39 mm steel case, which is surprisingly compact considering the complexity of the mechanism. The watch comes on a calfskin strap. The estimate is from 95,000 to 120,000 Swiss francs, but we expect these watches to be sold for significantly higher prices at auction.
