When it comes to luxury goods, the term "value for money" may seem somewhat contradictory.
After all, the essence of luxury is not just function, but something magical that goes beyond affordability. Nevertheless, there are models on the market that demonstrate an amazing balance of cost and quality. These watches offer unparalleled value and allow a touch of luxury that is usually out of reach.
However, the perception of value is subjective. You might evaluate it differently, or other characteristics might be important to you. My task is to share five watch models that have made a strong impression on me from the perspective of value for money. These are watches that, in my opinion, are better than one might expect given their cost. Note that this is not about cheapness: even watches for 100,000 euros can "punch above their weight." It's all relative! I invite you to share your options in the comments. Now, let's move on to the review.
Great Value in Vintage Style: Lorier Neptune
While there are many microbrands with a vintage aesthetic on the market, I regularly recommend only one - Lorier. In my experience, this American brand best conveys the spirit of vintage watches in the feel of wearing them. All Lorier models have this quality, but my preference is the diver Neptune, priced at just $599.

Why do these watches "punch above their weight"? First, because of the design. Lorier usually combines elements of several vintage models, creating something new. The result seems both familiar and original. The watches look as though they could have existed for decades, even though they are new creations.

Secondly, the construction. You shouldn't expect perfect finishing or assembly at this price, but Lorier skillfully focuses on important details to achieve a warm vintage feel. Acrylic crystals and bezel inserts play a key role here. The vintage spirit is also manifested in the bezel operation and the bracelet feel. There is love and attention invested by Lorier's owners, which is rare to find in mass production for such money.

Complex Value: Christopher Ward C1 Bel Canto
Christopher Ward is a brand with a mission to offer excellent value for money. However, I have some reservations: sometimes, value is achieved at the expense of originality, elegance, and design. Often, when looking at their watches, I think: "Yes, they are impressive, but I'd rather spend twice as much on something that touches my soul, not just my mind." Nevertheless, this is subjective, as confirmed by the large number of loyal CW fans.

I must note that Christopher Ward regularly raises the bar. An example is the C1 Bel Canto model, priced between €4,000 and €5,000. These watches offer features usually found in models ten times more expensive.
Specifically, they include sonnerie au passage - a chiming mechanism by the hour. The modified Sellita SW200 caliber in the Bel Canto strikes the hours, paying homage to classical complex watchmaking art. The entire mechanism is located on top of the dial and fully visible, providing access to high watchmaking at the price of a regular watch.

Incredible Finishing: Longines Spirit
I have already mentioned the Longines Spirit and its quality finish in a previous article about value in 2023. And today, it remains the undisputed leader in its segment.
All Longines Spirit models I have dealt with were finished impeccably. The short, deep, and textured brushing creates a slightly "sticky" feel, and the transitions between surfaces are sharp and clear but not cutting. The mirror polishing is done very cleanly.

Priced from €2,450, these watches significantly surpass competitors in terms of external finish quality. I have seen models costing several times more with less exquisite execution.

Everything You Could Want Under €5,000: Rolex Datejust ref. 1601
Allow me to briefly step away from modern watches. I have written a lot about the vintage Rolex Datejust, and I believe these are some of the best watches in terms of value for money on the market today. Of course, you must be prepared for the peculiarities of vintage models. Modern Christopher Ward watches are undoubtedly more reliable and sturdily built. However, a good vintage Datejust combines many important characteristics for collectors.

Let's start with historical significance: these are iconic watches costing less than €5,000. In production since 1945, the Datejust is often copied but not surpassed. It created an entire category of formal GADA-style watches. Moreover, it is the first flagship model of Rolex (before the Day-Date appeared in 1956) and the first watch with a Jubilee bracelet - an important element in the brand's history.

My choice is the reference 1601 with a silver dial. The fluted white gold bezel and "pie-pan" dial are classic Rolex Datejust. €5,000 is a substantial sum, but very few watches offer such historical significance at this price. At the same time, they are incredibly reliable and serviceable, surpassing many vintage alternatives. If you do not feel a connection with these watches, they retain their value well, making them a sensible investment.

Maximum for €300: Citizen Tsuyosa
What if you need the maximum for modest money? Here comes Citizen Tsuyosa. At its price level, I do not find any serious drawbacks with these watches. Of course, you can criticize some borrowed design elements or the fact that a master will probably replace the mechanism rather than repair it. But at such a price, you cannot demand the impossible.

Citizen offers a stainless steel case with an integrated bracelet and an automatic movement. The package includes a sapphire crystal, a transparent case back, several sizes and options, as well as water resistance up to 50 meters. You can even choose a bright dial color. All this costs less than servicing a Christopher Ward, Longines, or Datejust.
Many brands offer similar features for similar money, but Citizen Tsuyosa stands out with its build and finish quality. Except, perhaps, for the stamped inner clasp elements, the watch could be mistaken for a model twice as expensive. When worn, you will not feel compromises, and that is enough to include them in my list.

Conclusion: Diversity of Value Forms
As you can see, value manifests in different aspects and depends on perspective. These five models are my unequivocal recommendations. Compared to competitors, each of them exceeds expectations in a certain direction.

I am sure you, dear readers, have your own options for watches with excellent value for money. Please share them in the comments - we will be interested to know your suggestions!
