When choosing high-quality luxury watches, one usually has to pay a significant sum.
But where can you find a quality option costing less than $300, especially for beginner collectors and those not ready to spend thousands on a watch? Today, we will explore whether the Swedish model Alato Ögonsten meets these requirements.
Case

When looking for an everyday watch or a first model, comfort and aesthetics are important. The watch should fit the wrist size, be lightweight yet feel substantial, as many enthusiasts appreciate the weight of the piece. A stainless steel case is standard, and a universal diameter is considered to be around 38 mm, which is implemented in the Ögonsten. Its parameters are: diameter 38 mm, lug-to-lug distance 46 mm, thickness 10.25 mm, lug width 20 mm. Thanks to the quartz mechanism, the weight on the steel bracelet is only 127 g for a wrist size of 16.5 cm.
The watch is designed for daily use and light adventures, with water resistance up to 100 meters thanks to a 6.8 mm screw-down "onion" crown. Despite its apparent simplicity, the case is complex in construction: two differently shaped and finished bezels are arranged in tiers. The lower bezel resembles the top part of a tonneau case, while the upper is round with a fine milled pattern. The central part of the case is also close to a tonneau with narrow lugs and flat sides.

The Alato Ögonsten features a hybrid case with a proprietary design, combining angles and smooth lines, alternating between satin and polished surfaces. As a result, the case looks harmonious and has a noticeable but not bulky presence on the wrist.

Dial
Ideal everyday watches should have a dial that combines restrained elegance and good legibility. Alato offers three color options: anthracite gray (our review), rose gold with a brown tint (gold-plated case), and royal blue on a steel case.

All versions have a sunray effect with a smoky gradient, creating a light iridescence, especially noticeable on the anthracite gray. The gray color is versatile and rarely found in everyday models, making it an interesting choice. Legibility is ensured by leaf-shaped hands with longitudinal satin finish, playing with light at different angles without distracting the eye.

The hands harmonize with thin faceted hour markers made of satin metal. A simple white minute scale around the dial provides accurate timekeeping. Particular attention is drawn to the sub-seconds dial at the "6 o'clock" position with a silver "leaf" texture background, satin hand, and black seconds scale, adding depth without overloading the design.

Thus, the Alato Ögonsten demonstrates balance and readability - key characteristics of ideal everyday watches.

Straps
Although the review features the watch on a steel bracelet, it comes with a leather strap embossed with a crocodile pattern and a water-resistant Zermatt lining, fastened with a branded buckle. The bracelet can be purchased separately: $79 USD ($109 AUD) for the steel version and $99 USD ($137 AUD) for the "Rose Gold" option. The bracelet features screw links, quick-release spring bars, and tool-free micro-adjustment, justifying the additional cost, especially considering the 100-meter water resistance.

Movement
Inside the Alato Ögonsten is a reliable and economical Swiss-made quartz movement - the Ronda 6004.D. It was chosen for its compactness, high accuracy (-10/+20 seconds per month), and long battery life - 40 months (over three years). The movement is equipped with a date function, but the crown has a "ghost" position for setting, which will not cause issues when using the watch in the "set and forget" mode.

Rarely for watches in the sub-$300 segment, the movement is visible through a transparent case back and adorned with radial Geneva waves, highlighting the quality of execution. The bridge even features a map of Sweden, adding uniqueness.
Conclusion
Elegant and versatile watches have become rare, especially among microbrands, which more often release divers or field models. Alato specializes in combining balanced strength and elegance at a reasonable price, making such watches accessible to a wide audience. The Ögonsten offers excellent value for money: attractive design, thoughtful features, and affordability in the sub-$300 segment.
