Artisans de Genève is a well-known name among watch enthusiasts, associated with a bespoke approach to watchmaking.
The company offers unique services for the hand customization of watches upon client request, resulting in exceptional, vibrant, and personalized timepieces. If you've ever seen Artisans de Genève's projects, you'll know that the team often radically changes the appearance of the watches, using different colors, techniques, and materials. Yet, the original model that served as the project's foundation is always recognizable. I was recently reminded of this when I saw Andre Agassi, one of my childhood idols, receive his watch from Artisans de Genève. It inspired me to consider how I would order a customization from AdG myself. It turned out the process is not so simple...
How Watches Become Bearers of Personal Stories
It is known that watches are not just devices for measuring time; they are powerful carriers of stories, reflecting creative intent and preserving memories of adventures and events. But how can you make a watch tell your personal story? Engraving on the back is a classic option, but what if you want a more visual and deeply personal design? Artisans de Genève offers exactly this unique experience - hand customization and restoration of watches. If you have a favorite watch that you want to make truly your own, the AdG team is ready to help.
Special Project by Artisans de Genève for Andre Agassi
This is exactly what Andre Agassi did, entrusting AdG with the customization of his white gold Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, model ref. 116519. The result is a watch that is still recognizable as a Rolex but has become an exclusive reflection of Agassi's personality. Being a fan of the tennis player, I immediately thought, "I hope they draw inspiration from 'Hot Lava'." Those familiar with Agassi will understand. For everyone else, let me explain: "Hot Lava" is the iconic look Agassi sported at the French Open at Roland Garros in 1990.
The Hot Lava Look and Its Significance
Today, most people recall the Nike Air Tech Challenge 2 "Hot Lava" sneakers Agassi wore back then. They were designed by legendary Nike designer Tinker Hatfield. The model stood out with a bright graphic style transitioning from orange-pink to black, imitating "lava" splashes created by Tom Endrich. This detail gave the sneakers their name.

However, Agassi's entire look was much more complex: a white polo shirt with a black stripe and bright pink inserts, black denim shorts with integrated pink cycling shorts, and a headband changing from match to match - from polo style to bright pink. This contrasting and revolutionary style became a symbol of rebellion in the conservative world of tennis.

The Influence of the Hot Lava Look on Tennis Culture
To talk about my fascination with Agassi's style is to underestimate its significance. This rebellious image reflected his attitude towards tennis, which he disliked for a long time due to pressure from his father and early departure to a tennis academy. Agassi expressed protest through bright and bold outfits, which eventually sparked a revolution in tennis fashion, known as "rock-n-roll tennis" according to Nike.

More than 30 years later, Agassi has not only reconciled with the sport but appreciates the influence of his visual style on tennis culture. It was this image that inspired the Artisans de Genève team to create a unique project - personal and deeply symbolic for the athlete. As Agassi himself noted: "It's a beautiful nod to the time I lived in, and it's truly impressive."

Artisans de Genève: When Personal Stories Come to Life on the Wrist
The first impression of these watches is not only the famous orange-pink tint on the subdials but also the innovative technical solutions. For the first time, AdG created the case and bezel from titanium - a lightweight material, ideal for tennis watches. As Agassi said: "Every detail matters on the court. I've always dreamed of a watch that wouldn't distract me, that would move with me." Titanium received an ultra-light Tytalit treatment for increased scratch resistance.

Inside the watch is a skeletonized movement, visible through the sapphire dial with orange-pink subdials. The chronograph second hand is painted in the signature color, and the rotor features a large orange-pink "A" logo as a sign of personalization. All these changes require the highest craftsmanship and precision, but in the end, the watch becomes not just a technical instrument, but a unique personal statement.

The Art of Visual Storytelling by Artisans de Genève
It is this approach to storytelling that sets Artisans de Genève apart in the watch market. Browsing the company's projects, you are amazed at the variety of models - from Rolex and Patek Philippe to Audemars Piguet and others. Each project starts with the owner's wishes, and the task of the craftsmen is to turn the watch into a unique storyteller of personal history.

For many AdG clients, the result is an ultra-personal work of art. The question of why change watches created by brand masters is natural. But often enthusiasts see details they would have done differently. Many collectors keep the originals untouched and order customization for special occasions to get watches that fully reflect their taste and character.

Individual Approach and Customization Opportunities
Artisans de Genève offers its clients a unique experience: participation in the creative process, communication with designers and watchmakers, discussion of technical complexities and possibilities. Such an experience inspires and allows for the creation of truly unique watches.

The company opens wide horizons in the choice of colors, materials, and technical solutions. For example, dial color customization is a simple but very important option for those who cannot find the perfect shade on the market.
