In some ways, it's hard to believe that Casio G-Shock watches have been around for nearly 40 years. Much of the watch industry (more or less intentionally) seems as old as the hills, but Casio's beloved line of ultra-durable quartz models always carried a sense of modernity, even futurism. However, as 2023 approaches and the official 40th anniversary of this line, the Japanese brand has begun its anniversary celebrations by playing to its strengths with a bold, bright, aggressive design that pushes the boundaries of what's possible in (relatively) affordable watchmaking.

The new Casio G-Shock 40th Anniversary MTGB3000FR-1A is one of the wildest MT-G models in recent times, complemented by impressive innovative materials while offering remarkably comfortable wearability.

With a width of 50.9 mm and a length of 51.9 mm from lug to lug, the multi-part stainless steel and carbon case of the Casio G-Shock 40th Anniversary MTGB3000FR-1A is far from diminutive on the wrist, but compared to previous MT-G iterations, this case provides surprisingly balanced and comfortable wear. The main factor in this is the overall case thickness of 13.2 mm, which is significantly thinner than many mechanical chronographs, but the case construction also plays a crucial role.
The heavily faceted outer case of matte stainless steel, with short, sharply downturned semi-integrated lugs and robust industrial crown guards, benefits from a slimming effect due to the black ion plating. It not only visually consolidates the watch on the wrist but also dynamically breaks up the case's side profile, immediately drawing attention to the crown, pushers, and ion-plated rose gold bezel.
This color scheme would be bold and masculine on its own, but the clear visual centerpiece is the carbon composite bezel. Inspired by the blazing power and incredible heat of solar flares, this fiery multicolored bezel combines vibrant shades of yellow, orange, red, black, and gray in an organic swirling pattern, creating a unique look for each MTGB3000FR-1A.
In normal lighting, it's an attractive fireball on the wrist, but the real spectacle comes when the lights go out - the yellowish segments of the bezel are impregnated with luminescent material, leading to an otherworldly, radioactive glow in the dark. Casio complements this package with a robust Carbon Core Guard construction and commemorative engraving on the case back, while the watch's water resistance is rated at 200 meters.

The Casio G-Shock 40th Anniversary MTGB3000FR-1A continues its wild aesthetic approach on the dial, where the brand adds mind-boggling colors to the already rich MTGB3000 layout. At first glance, the deep, rich ion-plated red of the sub-dials and tapering sword hands catches the eye, but the layers of texture throughout the dial make it even more dynamic.
The black dial surface itself combines a fine radial matte texture with a mottled, organic array of irregular dark accents designed to mimic the ever-changing hot spots and dark spots on the sun's surface. Each dial element also adds its own texture to this mix, highlighting each element of the complex scheme against the overall background. Each of the three sub-dials is complemented by an azurage texture, as well as azurage accents on the light rings around the 24-hour sub-dial at the 3 o'clock position, the second timezone sub-dial at the 6 o'clock position, and the multifunction sub-dial segments at the 9 o'clock position.
The minute grooved pattern of the ion-plated rose gold indices gives these elements a bolder, more substantial look than traditional matte finishes, and the split matte and matte surfaces of the hands break up the visual area of these large surfaces.
As is often the case with Casio's high-end G-Shock offerings, the MTGB3000FR-1A's dial finish surpasses all similar offerings in its price range, providing more detail and complex surfaces than traditional mechanical models costing many times more. Of course, such a bright and complex design may not appeal to everyone and has its drawbacks.
The date window at 4:30 is likely to continue to be controversial, and the wide range of functionalities offered by the 9 o'clock sub-dial may seem confusing to those unfamiliar with analog G-Shocks.

Casio equips the G-Shock 40th Anniversary MTGB3000FR-1A with its own quartz movement, Module 5672. Like all modern high-end G-Shocks, Module 5672 offers a dizzying array of functionalities. The full set of complications includes a world timer displaying two time zones and automatically adjusting for daylight saving time, a 24-hour countdown timer, a 24-hour chronograph, a programmable daily alarm, LED dial illumination, a perpetual calendar, and automatic radio-controlled time correction six times a day.
In practice, this makes Module 5672 more or less perfectly accurate, but even without the time correction feature, the movement provides an accuracy of +15/-15 seconds per month. Casio also uses its Tough Solar charging system, allowing the Module 5672 to provide an 18-month power reserve after a full solar charge. The Module 5672 model also offers Bluetooth connectivity and smartphone pairing for easy time and date setting via the Casio Watches app. However, the pairing and setup process through this app is noticeably less intuitive than the G-Shock Connected app used for previous MT-G generations.

To complete the design, Casio equips the G-Shock 40th Anniversary MTGB3000FR-1A with a semi-integrated strap made of elastic black resin. Like previous MT-G straps, this strap features a pronounced texture, a raised central section near the lugs, a sharp taper in the middle of the wrist, and an overall muscular feel.
The embossed pattern throughout the central section adds dynamic visual complexity to the black-on-black case and strap combination, while the rose gold ion-plated buckle and keeper create a natural accent. Casio pays final tribute to its anniversary on the keeper, where the special text "Since 1983" is etched.

Although technically the Casio G-Shock 40th Anniversary MTGB3000FR-1A was released before the brand's 40th-anniversary celebration, it starts the celebration with a bang, showcasing impressive finishing, innovative materials, striking color, and a combination of immense functionality and bulletproof durability that has come to define the G-Shock line over the past four decades. The Casio G-Shock 40th Anniversary MTGB3000FR-1A is already available at select authorized retailers, the G-Shock Soho Store, and the brand's e-commerce platform.
The price of the Casio G-Shock 40th Anniversary MTGB3000FR-1A at the time of publication is 1300 USD. For more detailed information, visit the brand's website.
