Key Takeaways

  • The Longines Legend Diver 39 offers a harmonious 39 mm case size suitable for most wrists.
  • Features an authentic design without artificial patina, preserving the vintage look.
  • Equipped with the L888.6 automatic movement, offering a 72-hour power reserve.

Recently, I wrote about the new, larger version of the Longines Legend Diver 59 with a 42 mm case diameter.

Despite some interesting changes in dial design, the overall concept disappointed me, which, in turn, heightened my appreciation for the optimal modern version of the Legend Diver - the 39 mm model, reference L3.764.4.50.7, available in a wide range of dial colors. Naturally, it's time to take a closer look at this model, provided to us by Gem Bijou from Toronto.

Advantages of the Longines Legend Diver 39

Before delving into a detailed analysis, let's note the obvious advantages of this version. First, the 39 mm case has more harmonious proportions compared to the recently released 42 mm version. Such dimensions suit about 80% of owners, especially those with a wrist circumference of less than 7.5 inches. If the wrist exceeds 7.5 inches, then the larger Legend Diver 59 model should be considered.

Another important aspect of the design that seems more appealing in the 39 mm version is the absence of artificial patina. In my opinion, this gives the watch a more authentic look, as close as possible to the original. The dial should age naturally over time without the application of artificial luminescence, which is now excessively used by many brands. Otherwise, stylistically, both versions are quite similar.

Historical Significance and Technical Features

Longines Legend Diver 39 historical design

We all know the legendary heritage of the Legend Diver, rooted in 1959 when the original model was equipped with a true super compressor case. Over time, technology changed, and the "pressure adaptive" super compressor case design became obsolete compared to modern materials and production tolerances. However, this applies to almost all aspects of mechanical watchmaking, so it's a pity that Longines abandoned the original case design in favor of the classic one.

Longines Legend Diver 39 dial details

The good news is that if you value accurate historical replicas, the 39 mm version matches the original in all other details. The dial retains the readable markings with thin long minute markers and larger marks every 5 minutes. At the positions of 3, 6, 9, and 12 o'clock, there are Arabic numerals in an attractive, large retro font. The hands remain sporty and elegant, with wide areas filled with lume. The second hand is elongated with a luminescent arrow tip, the minute hand with a sword-shaped end, and the hour hand stands out with its signature wide arrow shape characteristic of the Legend Diver.

Longines Legend Diver 39 classic look

Stepping back, the Legend Diver 39 is a magnificent modern interpretation of the original vintage model. Few watches can boast such precision in recreating the original. Even iconic models like the Submariner have undergone far more design changes over the years than this Legend Diver. This is why Longines has so many dedicated fans - the brand masterfully creates reissues aimed at collectors. An example is the Heritage Sector Dial model, which we reviewed in 2020.

Proportions and Tactile Feel

Longines Legend Diver 39 on wrist

The watch feels excellent on the wrist - there's no other way to put it. For a diver's watch with 300-meter water resistance to look so stylish while remaining both elegant and sporty is a rare combination. The 39 mm case stands out with details: a lug-to-lug distance of 46.9 mm, a strap width of 20 mm, and a case thickness of 12.7 mm, including the domed sapphire crystal.

Longines Legend Diver 39 case and bracelet

For a diver's watch, the model has fairly narrow and graceful lugs, with an excellent curve that smoothly transitions into the bracelet links. The watch easily hugs my 16.5 cm wrist and looks harmonious with any casual outfit but looks especially striking with an elegant smart-casual style. The "beads of rice" bracelet allows the watch to easily transition from active diving to an evening out by the sea.

Longines Legend Diver 39 compressor style crown

A distinctive feature of this model is the double "compressor" style crown. Previously, this functionality was practical, but now it's a stylized element that has become part of the heritage. Excluding JLC Polaris, this pair of crowns is a trademark of Longines, just as the fluted bezel is associated with Rolex. Both crowns are screw-down: the upper one controls the rotation of the internal bezel, which operates very smoothly, and the lower one sets the time with a stop-seconds function.

Movement and Technical Specifications

The model is powered by the L888.6 movement - an automatic caliber based on ETA, modified specifically for Longines. It has an impressive power reserve of 72 hours. The operating frequency is 3.5 Hz (25,200 vibrations per hour). This frequency is lower than the standard 4 Hz but higher than 3 Hz, reducing friction and energy consumption while maintaining a smooth movement of the second hand. The caliber is COSC certified, with guaranteed accuracy from -4 to +6 seconds per day.

Final Conclusions

I would like to take this watch on a real dive, not just "dive with it" - if that makes sense. The Legend Diver embodies sports motivation in watchmaking, offered at an attractive price of about $3,850 USD. Considering all the facts, I consider this model one of the best diver's watches in its price segment, combining rich historical heritage, high-quality craftsmanship, and a design that has changed little since the original appeared.
