Watches with illumination always draw attention, especially when it comes to a model with maximum luminescence.
In this regard, the IWC Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Ceralume (IW505801) is a unique example. Initially presented as a prototype, it is now released as a limited edition of 250 pieces made from the proprietary Ceralume material. The watch case has impressive dimensions - 46.5 × 15.9 mm. But is this enough for true luminescence enthusiasts?
Case Material: What is Ceralume?
It's not just white ceramic. Ceralume is a special type of ceramic material imbued with luminescent pigments. Its unique feature is the ability to absorb light and slowly emit it over time, providing bright glow in the dark. In dark conditions, the watch case acquires a ghostly appearance. During the Watches and Wonders 2026 exhibition, I personally tested this model in a darkened room - the effect is truly impressive and even somewhat eerie.
Design and Dial Illumination
The IWC Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Ceralume is crafted in a monochrome style: the Ceralume case is paired with a dial fully covered in luminescent material. The perpetual calendar numbers, indices, and hands have a slightly contrasting shade, with the central hands filled with white luminescent compound.

In daylight, the watch showcases a combination of matte and glossy white surfaces with barely noticeable tonal transitions. In darkness, the luminous elements dominate: the numbers and hands appear as dark silhouettes against the bright glow. Despite its striking appearance, such a design might be inconvenient for pilots flying at night. However, they are likely not the primary target audience for this model.

Movement and Perpetual Calendar Functions
Beneath the "ghostly" dial and within the large Ceralume case lies the IWC 52616 manufacture caliber. This automatic movement is equipped with the proprietary Pellaton winding system, has a seven-day power reserve, and manages the perpetual calendar developed by Kurt Klaus.
The calendar displays the date, day of the week, month, and moon phase on four sub-dials, as well as a four-digit year located between the 7 and 8 o'clock marks. The moon phase indicator accounts for both hemispheres and maintains accuracy for over five centuries with minimal deviation.

Transparent Case Back and Luminous Rotor
The model features a transparent case back through which the intricate mechanism can be observed. The theme of luminescence continues here: the winding rotor is adorned with a "Probus Scafusia" medallion made from luminescent material - a rare choice for watches of this class. The mechanism is also decorated with traditional embellishments: perlage and blue screws.

Strap and Overall Design Concept
The white rubber strap that comes with the watch is also treated with luminescent pigments, ensuring complete harmony with the case and dial's color scheme. This comprehensive approach to illumination creates a unified visual image. Despite the aviation theme of the collection, this model is more suited for individual use rather than group flights. It can be called a "stunt" model in the Big Pilot line.

Price and Availability
The price of this technically complex model, combining a traditional perpetual calendar with an experimental material, is provided upon request. The limited edition comprises only 250 pieces.
