Panerai is one of the few manufacturers whose watches look appropriate, even if they seem too large on the wrist. Photographing the Submersible is challenging due to the light and reflections from the highly convex sapphire crystal. The bezel features a traditional unidirectional rotating timer.
Inside is the in-house automatic caliber 9.9010 with GMT function. The movement operates at a frequency of 4 Hz with a power reserve of 72 hours. The dial displays the time, date, seconds hand, and an additional second time zone hand. It is not entirely clear if these are 'true' GMT watches, as there are no 24-hour markers, which rather indicates two time zones rather than a full 24-hour GMT. It would be helpful if Panerai made this feature more explicit, as most models with this movement do not emphasize the function.
Impressions of Design and Functionality
The Submersible Afniotech wins by not looking gaudy. It can be noted that the case back is overloaded with details, but overall the watch maintains a serious tool character. The colors are muted, the dial is clear and easy to read. This is truly a successful design for a watch with a military underwater theme. It seems that a professional military could use them on a modern submarine. Real soldiers would probably need a substantial discount. For outdoor enthusiasts and wealthy individuals preferring a bold tactical style, these Panerai Submersible Navy SEALs Afniotech Experience watches will be a true delight.
The thick black rubber strap ensures a comfortable fit even for the heavy 47mm case. However, it is not the most suitable sports choice for most Panerai fans, considering the brand offers lighter, more compact, and affordable models with similar style and functionality. In the truly limited format, the PAM01089 is a 'strange exotic' for collectors seeking an interesting story and a unique experience with their watch. According to Panerai, after all 35 pieces are sold, the planned experience in Florida will take place in March 2027. I will be eagerly awaiting reviews.
