Depancel has earned recognition for creating affordable watches inspired by motorsport.
But what if the French brand moved away from racing themes and created a chronograph inspired by the elegance of a unique 1940s road car? Enter the Depancel Série-R Chronograph Ice Blue - a fresh interpretation of the popular Série-R model, preserving vintage charm while enhancing stylish appeal. This showcases the series' versatility, something fans of the brand have noticed. As a result, the limited edition of 100 pieces was completely sold out. This is quite understandable, as the inspiration comes from one of the most beautiful cars in history.
Historical Context: Brand Talbot and Its Legacy
If you are familiar with the history of French car manufacturing, the name Talbot is surely known to you. I was born in 1977 and mainly know the brand from the cars of the 1980s. At that time, Talbot was part of PSA Peugeot Citroën and produced fairly ordinary models like the Solara, Horizon, and Sunbeam. It was not the best period in the history of a brand that originated in the early 20th century. However, if you have visited car museums or read about Talbot's rich past, you know that the company made some of the most beautiful cars, especially in the 1930s and 40s. Many of them are now in prestigious collections worldwide.
Creation History of Depancel Série-R Chronograph Ice Blue
Talbot gained particular fame for its extravagant bodies inspired by aviation. These cars featured elegant, flowing lines, streamlined wings, and sculptural shapes. Bright examples include the Talbot-Lago T26 Grand Sport and T150C SS "Teardrop". In the 1950s, the brand also created impressive sports cars like the T14 LS Special Coupé and 2500 Sport, which could easily appear in James Bond films.

One of the most impressive Talbot-Lago cars was the T26. Look at the image - and everything will become clear without unnecessary words. The body, created by the Figoni & Falaschi atelier, showcases elegant lines first presented in 1947.

Figoni & Falaschi was a French luxury coachbuilder with Italian roots, operating from 1935 to the 1950s. During this short period, the company created outstanding bodies for Rolls-Royce, Delahaye, Talbot-Lago, and Simca. Experts estimate that it took about 2100 hours to create one body. Looking at the Talbot-Lago T26, you can feel the scale and meticulousness of the work.

Features of the Limited Edition Depancel Série-R Chronograph Ice Blue
This story inspired Depancel to create a stylish version of the Série-R Chronograph in a color scheme inspired by the Talbot-Lago T26. The result is a watch distinctively different from the racing version, the Série-R Tangerine Chronograph, which I reviewed in 2024. The basic specifications remain the same: a case size of 36 × 40 mm, thickness of 13.3 mm, lug-to-lug distance of 48.5 mm, and strap width of 22 mm. The elegant case with curved lines reminiscent of a radiator grille is equipped with two chronograph buttons and a crown on the right. A small plate with the limited edition number is located on the left.

The case is crafted from a combination of matte and polished surfaces, and it is topped with a sapphire crystal. Underneath lies a light blue dial inspired by the Talbot-Lago T26. The outer part of the dial is adorned with vertical engravings imitating a radiator grille. On this background, there are applied hour markers with white luminescent Super-LumiNova coating.

Detailed Review of the Ice Blue Dial
The center of the dial is slightly recessed and features sunburst finishing. Here, three additional counters and an extra row of hour markers are located. The 30-minute chronograph counter is at the "3 o'clock" position and is highlighted by a dark blue outer ring, matching the color of the central chronograph seconds hand and the hands on the three sub-dials.

Particular attention should be paid to the dark blue square markers at the 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions, as well as the anodized dark blue insert on the crown. They harmoniously blend with the color of the perforated leather strap, which is the second color used in the Talbot-Lago T26 - the source of inspiration for these watches. The result is a stylish version of the Série-R Chronograph, which has become my favorite in the series thanks to its expressive design and the story behind it.

Movement and Technical Specifications
If you turn the watch over, you can see the Chinese Peacock SL-4801 caliber, which powers it. This automatic chronograph debuted at the Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair 2023 and is an excellent choice for affordable chronographs. The movement operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and has a power reserve of up to 60 hours. The integrated chronograph architecture includes a column wheel, vertical clutch, and transverse balance bridge.

Final Assessment of the Limited Series Depancel Série-R Chronograph Ice Blue
Overall, the limited series Depancel Série-R Chronograph Ice Blue made a strong impression on me. The inspiration behind it plays a crucial role here. The Talbot-Lago T26 is a magnificent reminder of the beauty of mid-20th century cars. The design and attention to detail are truly impressive, especially considering that today's car design has become more uniform among brands, the T26 emphasizes the uniqueness and craftsmanship of that era.

The result is a concise, elegant version of the Depancel Série-R Chronograph that immediately attracts attention. I prefer the Ice Blue look over the racing versions of the series. In my opinion, it is the best option in the lineup. Clearly, I am not alone in this assessment: all 100 pieces have already been sold at a price of €1495 each. This is quite understandable, and I hope that Depancel will be inspired to create new versions of the Série-R Chronograph dedicated to beautiful classic cars like the Talbot-Lago T26. In the meantime, I will delve into studying the era of Talbot-Lago...
