Key Takeaways

  • The green lacquer ombre dial is available in both 36mm and 41mm Rolex Datejust models.
  • The 36mm model offers superior visual balance and classic appeal.
  • Rolex caliber 3235 provides excellent precision and a 70-hour power reserve.

One of the Rolex novelties at Watches and Wonders 2026 was the Oyster Perpetual Datejust 41 with a green lacquer dial featuring an ombre effect (ref. 126334).

Essentially, this is a new dial option for the largest Datejust in the Crown's collection. However, it's not just a new color - this series of watches is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Oyster case. Moreover, unlike previous versions, the new dial is crafted with a fully lacquered base and a gradient created by applying black lacquer in concentric layers towards the edges. Although this green dial is presented in the Datejust 41mm model, it soon became known that it would also be available for the 36mm models. I recently had the chance to test all configurations and choose the optimal variant. The conclusion, while unsurprising to some, became more evident than ever.

Overview of Rolex Novelties at Watches and Wonders 2026 in Brussels

Last week, we had the opportunity to explore all Rolex novelties for 2026 at Watches and Wonders in the brand's office in Brussels. This meeting allowed us to devote much more time to each watch than in Geneva, gaining a deeper understanding of their features. Among them was the full range of Datejusts with new green ombre dials. The assortment included 36mm and 41mm versions with smooth and fluted bezels on Oyster and Jubilee bracelets. First and foremost, I was struck by the new dials. The richness of the green shade and the incredible depth created by the ombre effect look truly impressive.

New Rolex Datejust Models with Green Lacquer Ombre Dial: Features and Prices

Initially, the Crown introduced the new Datejust version in a 41mm size with a fluted bezel on an Oyster bracelet. Although I don't consider myself a purist when it comes to watches, it's hard not to favor the classic look - the 36mm Datejust with a fluted bezel on a Jubilee bracelet. It is this traditional design that makes the Datejust a classic that I value. It's not about the ability to wear a larger model, but about the historical context and visual proportions that have always made the 36mm my favorite. Nonetheless, I am open to new experiences, especially when a dial is as good as the new green ombre.

When Rolex invited us to Brussels to get acquainted with the 2026 novelties, I gladly tried on different Datejust configurations with new green dials. Let's take a closer look at them:

  • 36mm steel version with smooth bezel (ref. 126200): €7,950 on an Oyster bracelet and €8,200 on a Jubilee bracelet.
  • 36mm steel model with white gold fluted bezel (ref. 126234): €9,700 on an Oyster bracelet and €9,950 on a Jubilee bracelet.
  • 41mm Datejust with smooth bezel (ref. 126300): €8,750 on an Oyster bracelet and €9,000 on a Jubilee bracelet.
  • 41mm Datejust with fluted bezel (ref. 126334): €11,450 on an Oyster bracelet and €11,700 on a Jubilee bracelet.

This data provides a clear picture of the price differences between models and bracelet options.

Technical Specifications of Rolex Datejust with Green Lacquer Ombre Dial

It's important to consider the technical parameters of the different model sizes. The 36mm model has a case diameter of 36mm, a lug-to-lug distance of 43.3mm, and a case thickness of 11.6mm. The larger version is 41 × 47.5 × 11.6mm. However, it's not just the dimensions that distinguish the models, but also the design with visual proportions that make the watches truly different.

Both versions are equipped with the proprietary Rolex caliber 3235 - an automatic movement with 31 jewels, operating at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and a power reserve of 70 hours. The movement features the proprietary Chronergy escapement and Parachrom hairspring, and is adjusted to an accuracy of ±2 seconds per day after assembly. The caliber displays hours, minutes, and seconds centrally, and also features an instant date change with quick setting.

Comparison with the 100th Anniversary Oyster Perpetual Models

Before trying on different Datejust models, we also tested the new Oyster Perpetual models dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Oyster case. I had no previous experience with them, so it was a new experience. The models with a Jubilee-style dial pleasantly surprised me, reminiscent of the jubilee versions from 1985. The color execution brought a smile as soon as I put the 36mm model on my wrist.

I also tried the 41mm version with a Jubilee dial, but the smaller model seemed more charming to me. Although 41mm fits well on my 18.5cm wrist, it ultimately comes down to size and personal preference. The dials of both models do not differ in design, and I simply prefer the charm of the smaller version. However, in the case of the Datejust, the rules of size assessment are different.

The Importance of Proper Proportions in 36mm and 41mm Models

When comparing the 36mm and 41mm Datejust models, it is especially noticeable that the version with the white gold fluted bezel has disrupted proportions in the larger model.

Wide bezel on 41mm Rolex Datejust

The bezel seems too wide, disrupting the natural balance. Especially if you try on the 36mm model afterward - the feeling is completely different. This confirms that the visual balance of the case, bezel, and dial is perfectly maintained in the smaller model, making the watch truly perfect.

Balanced proportions on 36mm Rolex Datejust

Besides visual proportions, Rolex designers added minute markings with numbers next to baton indices on larger dials to compensate for the size. Although this is a subtle change, it adds a modern instrumental accent to the classic Datejust, which I don't always like. In the collection, dial designs vary, but the green lacquer ombre dials are an excellent example of why it's worth choosing the 36mm model.

Concluding Thoughts on the New Rolex Datejust Series with Green Lacquer Ombre Dial

Instead of focusing on the imperfections of the 41mm model, I prefer to highlight the splendor of the 36mm Datejust and the stunning depth of the new green ombre dials. I enjoyed wearing different versions with these dials. Each version confirmed that the color and depth are something special. We compared them to a number of new standard dials and all agreed that the green lacquer ombre stands out with a special flair.

Moreover, the 36mm model became the undisputed favorite. In the ever-evolving watch world, it's nice to see that some things remain unchanged. Rolex has brilliantly preserved the perfection of the 36mm Datejust. While my first preference is the classic with a fluted bezel and Jubilee bracelet, I was also impressed by the version with a smooth bezel. Despite the external similarity to the Oyster Perpetual, the new green lacquer ombre dial gives the watch incredible depth and expressiveness.

The Magic of the New Green Lacquer Ombre Dials

Rolex has done an excellent job with these dials - so much so that it was hard for me to take off the 36mm Datejust with a fluted bezel on a Jubilee bracelet. On the way back, we discussed all the novelties for a long time but constantly returned to the 36mm model with the green dial. I can confidently say that this is the Datejust I would choose from the current lineup. I would even argue that it would enter my top five favorite modern Rolex models. This is an impressive result for what seems to be a simple dial variation.
