Sitting here with a glass of wine in hand (I promise, it's late evening!), I can't help but think about the Breitling releases that were launched at the end of March.
This year is very important for the Swiss watch company. It marks 140 years since Breitling officially made a name for itself with its groundbreaking innovations. To commemorate this milestone, the watch company is releasing a series of stories about its achievements.
However, all of this would not be as interesting without one or two releases dedicated to the event.
As these stories delve into the brand's history, so too do the models that accompany them. Last week, just before the most prestigious luxury watch exhibition in Switzerland, several watches were unveiled. I will discuss them in this article.
The New Breitling Models You've Been Waiting For
Among the new Breitling 2024 releases are numerous new Navitimer 41 models, including several GMT versions. The watches are available in various case materials, straps, and dial colors, ready to be collected before the summer months arrive.
In addition, Breitling has released a limited edition Navitimer Cosmonaute, equipped with its own B12 movement. As for the Chronomat, Breitling did not disappoint either. There's something equally exciting in this lineup!
The new models are available in 42 mm and Super 44 mm sizes and are made of lightweight titanium. If these launches weren't exciting enough, there's always the Aerospace B70 Orbiter watch. They are dedicated to the anniversary of the Orbiter 3 flight.
I'm sure all these new Breitling watches sound intriguing. But to truly appreciate their excellence, let's take a closer look.

History Lesson 1 - Breitling Navitimer
We often overuse the word "iconic" in the luxury watch industry. I believe a watch must have a significant impact on the industry to earn that status. In my opinion, the Navitimer watches are true icons, and I'm sure I'm not alone in this view.
The Navitimer watches are among the most recognized pilot watches in the world. A post-war classic, it has changed over the years while retaining its signature features.
The Swiss company has always been associated with aviation and pilots. Therefore, the use of a sliding rule bezel was simply indispensable.
This feature, originally developed for the Chronomat model, was later applied to the Navitimer. Its purpose? To optimize complex flight calculations.
The Navitimer won over collectors back in the 1950s. Then Willy Breitling and a watchmaker named Marcel Robert modified the Navitimer.
Thanks to their modifications, a pilot could perform all calculations without turning the bezel.
New Navitimer 41 and GMT 41 Watches
The latest Navitimer 41 watches introduced by Breitling still stand out for their practicality combined with a striking appearance. They still retain that "wow" factor that has attracted enthusiasts since the 1950s.
Although the watches look complex, the complexity of the design adds to their appeal. Just think about it. You can control the outer scale by moving the bezel, while the inner scale remains stationary.
This opens up a whole range of technical possibilities. You can convert nautical and land miles into kilometers and calculate the distance traveled. Pilots can also calculate fuel consumption during the flight.
Breitling Navitimer 41 Watches
The new 2024 Navitimer models are available in cream, black, dark blue, light blue, and emerald green. Specifically, the automatic 41 watches are available in dark blue, light blue, and emerald green.
These simple three-hand models measure 41 mm and feature a closed case back.
Choose a 7-link stainless steel bracelet or a leather strap, depending on whether you want a dressy or understated look. Either way, both options look great.
Breitling Navitimer Automatic 41
If you want to go even dressier, there is a two-tone version in stainless steel or rose gold, as well as a solid 18-carat rose gold option.
Both versions have a cream dial and look particularly striking on a brown leather strap.
Navitimer 41 GMT Watches
The Breitling Navitimer 41 GMT watches are no less attractive. They are aimed at those who love to travel in style.
The hands and hour markers match the case materials. The steel case is made of silver, while the rose gold case is made of precious metal.
The case size is 41 mm, and there is a choice of a leather strap or a 7-link bracelet.
The steel models are available in black, cream, and light blue. They also feature a date window at the "6 o'clock" position. My favorites are the emerald green and the 18-carat rose gold models. The materials and colors embody the perfect blend of boldness and sophistication.
It is worth noting that the new Navitimer 41 watches have a Caller-style GMT design. This means that local time is displayed on a 24-hour scale, while the main hands show home time.
History Lesson 2 - Breitling Cosmonaute
The new Breitling Navitimer B12 Cosmonaute model is a true collector's item. It celebrates a landmark event in the brand's history - the creation of the first Swiss chronograph to go into space in the 1950s.
In 1952, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) decided they needed superior wristwatches for cockpit use. The watches had to assist in aerial calculations and ensure legibility.
Willy Breitling decided to redesign the Chronomat's bezel into a logarithmic scale and integrate it into the Navitimer.
The result was a classic black dial with hour markers of radium-coated Arabic numerals and a beaded bezel.
In 1956, Breitling unveiled the design to the public. During the golden era of the Navitimer, Breitling was also working on a prototype for astronaut Scott Carpenter.
Carpenter wore these wristwatches during the "Mercury-Atlas 7" mission aboard the "Aurora 7" spacecraft. The watches became the first Swiss chronograph to go into space. The 24-hour scale, which replaced the hour and minute scale, was an unusual design decision.
In 2022, Breitling marked this milestone with the Cosmonaute 60th Anniversary model - the Navitimer B02 Chronograph 41 Cosmonaute. It featured a platinum bezel, sapphire case back, and special engraving on the bridges.
New Limited Edition Breitling Navitimer B12 Cosmonaute
Equipped with the new in-house Breitling B12 movement, the Navitimer Cosmonaute 2024 watches hold real historical significance.
Returning to the times of the first manned space flights, they serve as a reminder of Breitling's integral role in aerospace and aviation horology. Bringing back the spirit of adventure and precision, its alluring emerald green dial is housed in an enticing 18-carat rose gold case.
The chronograph's second hand with a barely noticeable touch of red beautifully contrasts with the black concentric sub-dials.
This is where the special finishing truly adds exclusivity to these new Breitling Navitimer B12 Cosmonaute watches.
Flip the watch over, and you'll see a nod to the 1962 Breitling Cosmonaute watch. Under the sapphire case back lies a stunning gold rotor - something you can't find in standard Breitlings.
I also love the beige 24-hour scale around the flange, which pays homage to vintage Breitling watches from the 1960s.
History Lesson 3 - Breitling Evospace
The Breitling Aerospace B70 watches are unapologetically masculine pilot instruments. If you like colorful digital watches and love aviation watches, you should check out this model.
The Aerospace model originally belonged to the Navitimer series and features noticeable rider tabs at 3, 6, 9, and 12H.
These protrusions serve more than just aesthetics. They make it easier to grip even under tight pilot gloves, framing the hybrid digital display.
The first Aerospace watches released by Breitling in 1985 resembled the Navitimer and Chronomat models.
However, the 2013 model defined the Aerospace we know today. But the new bright orange 2024 Breitling Aerospace model pays tribute to an important moment in time.
Moreover, its design contains a piece of genuine, authentic history as a tribute to the brand's monumental achievement.
In 1999, two men named Bertrand Piccard and Brian Jones circumnavigated the Earth on a special globe. It was the world's first non-stop circumnavigation (a mission that had already failed twice). The mission was completed by the Breitling Orbiter 3.
After 19 days, 21 hours, and 47 minutes, the crew successfully landed in the vast Egyptian desert.
New Breitling Aerospace B70 Orbiter 25th Anniversary Watch
Celebrating a quarter-century since the mission's successful completion, Breitling presents this model.
It features a highly accurate quartz movement that is ten times more precise than regular quartz. It can also measure 1/100 of a second and offers a GMT and /flyback function.
The analog dial combined with digital features is what makes the Aerospace series so special. The watch is equipped with a minute repeater for acoustic time display and the mission logo on the right side of the dial.
The bright orange dial color also pays homage to the Breitling lettering on the balloon. A key advantage is the lightweight titanium case and bracelet.
The strength-to-weight ratio is excellent for everyday wear. If you prefer a sportier style, choose the watch on a black rubber strap embossed with Breitling.
What makes the Breitling Navitimer B70 Orbiter 25th Anniversary such a novelty is the piece of history contained in its case. Flip the case over to reveal the sapphire case back, and you can see a real piece of history.
Inside the case is a piece of the original Orbiter 3 balloon.
Moreover, the watch is released in a limited edition of 1999 pieces in honor of the year the special expedition was organized.
History Lesson 4 - Chronomat
Did you always find the original steel Chronomat watches too bulky? The new 42 mm and Super (larger) 44 mm models have a titanium case!
Despite the change in material, I suspect collectors will love these new Chronomat watches. Breitling has retained all the important distinctive features, but now they are complemented by a robust and lightweight case.
Moreover, the new models still feel pedigreed, yet benefit from a more ergonomic design.
The history of the Breitling Chronomat spans over 70 years. Its name comes from the bezel with a logarithmic scale, which once combined the words "chronograph" and "mathematics".
In the 1980s, the Chronomat acquired a solid, refined design that we all recognize today. It marked the brand's 100th anniversary, receiving a large bulbous crown, bezel rider tabs for easy grip, and straightened lugs.
Breitling also developed a bracelet specifically for this model. The Rouleaux bracelet is one of the most recognizable features of the Chronomat with its luxurious links reminiscent of a roll.
Breitling Chronomat 42 mm and Super 44 mm Watches
Reiterating the original 1984 design, these new Chronomat watches feature ceramic inserts, a legible dial, and a chronograph complication. In the Super Chronomat model, black ceramic is added to the pushers and crown, as well as the bezel.
Four rider tabs are positioned at the cardinal points of the bezel. They frame the anthracite dial with black chronograph sub-dials. The hour markers and hands are also coated with luminescent Super-LumiNova.
The central chronograph hand is painted light blue, and the date window is located at the "6 o'clock" position.
The titanium Chronomat watches, measuring 42 and 44 mm, are equipped with a tachymetric scale around the flange. They also come with a choice of the aforementioned lightweight titanium bracelet or a black rubber strap in the Rouleaux style.
If you regularly use the stopwatch functions, the new Chronomat will seem incredibly practical. The biggest advantage of the new Chronomat watches, of course, lies in the lightweight case.
Suffice it to say, the Chronomat is the perfect everyday companion for any occasion, now more durable and lighter than ever before.
Concluding Thoughts
This year, I've seen so many new Breitling models that it's hard to choose a favorite. I'm sure you understand my dilemma.
For me, the Navitimer B12 Cosmonaut steals the show. The decision to pair a rosy rose gold case with a deep, mesmerizing emerald green dial is simply extraordinary.
The configuration is bold and audacious, and I love it. Somehow Breitling still manages to bridge the gap between sophistication and practicality. Genius.
