Working in the watch industry, it's sometimes surprising how long you can go without trying a watch that's been on the market for a while.
This was the case with the Maen Hudson diver. The Swedish brand with Dutch roots first introduced the Hudson in 2018. Over almost eight years, the model has gone through five generations and evolved. With the release of the new generation Hudson, Maen has returned to its origins. The case has been completely redesigned, and the construction updated to match the original Maen Hudson concept. I had the opportunity to personally get acquainted with the new Hudson 38 MK5 version.
Appearance and Design of Maen Hudson 38 MK5
At first glance, it becomes clear that the overall look of the Maen Hudson has not undergone drastic changes. Although I hadn't had the opportunity to wear these watches before, previous versions always caught the eye when announced. Honestly, the Hudson was never my favorite among the brand's models. The Manhattan and Brooklyn 36 Triple Calendar lines stood out immediately upon release. Lately, I've been interested in the Manhattan 37 Ultra-Slim model. But first - the updated Maen Hudson 38 MK5.
Creation History of Maen Hudson 38 MK5
What does returning to the principles of Maen Hudson mean? The brand's founders, Sebastian Kortjans and Jull van Helvoort, wanted to create the perfect affordable tool watch. After four generations and seven years, it was time for a redesign. It all started with an updated 38 mm case and a lug-to-lug distance of 47 mm. Despite a profile of 13 mm, including a 2-mm "box" type sapphire glass, the steel case became thinner than previous versions.

Additionally, the case received drilled lugs and improved finishing. It is predominantly matte, with polished elements adding visual interest. Upon closer inspection, a combination of different brushing techniques to create texture is noticeable.

The new case is equipped with a steel bezel with a polished ceramic insert featuring 60-minute markers. A luminescent marker (lume pip) has been added at the request of many, available as a red or white triangle depending on the version.

New Dial and Texture
Inside the case is a new matte and textured dial. The test version had a black dial, but Maen also offers a stylish dark blue option. You can choose a model with or without a date. Although the blue dials are identical, the black versions differ in details. The model with a date is adorned with red accents, adding a bit of color. In our case, the dial is dateless, which I like for its cleaner and more concise look.

The black textured dial is complemented by polished rectangular hour markers filled with Super-LumiNova X1. Above the dial are wide baton-style hour and minute hands filled with lume, and the second hand is in a "lollipop" shape with illumination.

The use of Super-LumiNova X1 has significantly improved the glow compared to previous versions. The only color accent on the dial is the red Hudson inscription, adding a graceful touch. Overall, the design is restrained enough for a diver's watch, making the Hudson 38 MK5 an excellent choice for daily wear in various situations.

Movement and Bracelet
Inside the case is the updated La Joux-Perret G100 caliber. This automatic movement operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, contains 24 jewels, and provides a power reserve of up to 68 hours. This is a replacement for the previous Sellita SW200-1 caliber. The accuracy is on average ±12 seconds per day, comparable to Sellita. The main improvement is the increased power reserve, allowing the watch to run for almost three days without winding.

The Maen Hudson 38 MK5 comes with a five-link bracelet, similar to previous versions but with improvements: quick-release links and a tool-free micro-adjustment system, making on-the-go fitting easier.

The bracelet quality is high. However, the standard configuration includes a black rally-style rubber strap made of FKM rubber. The model's price is €899. If you wish to purchase the steel bracelet, its cost is added - €189, bringing the total price with 21% VAT to €1,088.

Wearing Comfort of Maen Hudson 38 MK5
On the wrist, the Maen Hudson 38 MK5 feels very comfortable for daily use. Bracelet adjustment was easy thanks to screw links that are simple to remove. After precise fitting using the micro-adjustment, the watch sits confidently and comfortably. I like the model's proportions: the watch is not too bulky and has a relatively slim profile.

In terms of visual perception, this predominantly black version is rather restrained. Personally, I would prefer the version with a blue dateless dial - it looks more stylish and prevents the watch from becoming boring.

This does not mean the black version is dull. Upon closer inspection, there are many details that enliven the design. However, I sometimes feel it lacks the expressiveness to stand out among competitors. Otherwise, these are quite competent and comfortable diver's watches, perfect for everyday wear.

Conclusion: Optimized Design and Build Quality
The redesigned Maen Hudson 38 MK5 offers an optimized case design that is pleasant to wear, and the build quality matches the level of watches priced around €1,000. I enjoyed the feel of the 120-click bezel rotation - sound and tactile feedback are top-notch.

The bracelet and clasp provide comfort and reliability for daily use. Although the Hudson 38's aesthetics may not appeal to everyone, if the design resonates with you, the new MK5 version is a successful choice available on Maen's official website. Share your opinion in the comments.
