New Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Chronographe Mystérieux

Parmigiani Fleurier is one of my favorite modern premium segment brands.

The Tonda PF line has been at the top of my personal watch ranking for several years. Its elegant design and arguably one of the best bracelets I have encountered significantly enhance the model's appeal. Special attention deserves the dial. A characteristic feature of all Parmigiani watches, from simple three-hand models to complex mechanisms, is the minimalism of details, which is revealed only by pressing a single button. The new Chronographe Mystérieux, presented this year, may be the most impressive of all.

First Impressions of the Tonda PF

In the summer of 2023, after moving to London, I attended a Parmigiani Fleurier event dedicated to the brand's return to the British market. It was there I first saw the Tonda PF. For me, these watches stood out among sports models with integrated bracelets due to their refined aesthetics. From the bracelet to the minimalist dial, the Tonda PF makes a completely different impression. This is why each new addition to the line piques my special interest. Without a doubt, this year's Chronographe Mystérieux deserves close attention.

Variations on Why Simplicity Matters

I admit, I tend to be conservative. I prefer basic, minimalist versions of items. In my garage are cars with manual transmissions and no turbochargers. In clothing, I favor the classic Oxford shirt. Perhaps it's boring, but classics always remain relevant. In the world of watches, I prefer three-hand models and rarely approve of brands' attempts to complicate them with additional functions. Many well-known sports watches with integrated bracelets lose their harmony and elegance when complications are added.

That's why Parmigiani Fleurier succeeds in adding complications to the Tonda PF collection. The complex models are almost indistinguishable from the simple ones, which speaks to a subtle approach to design. You could call it 'the absence of excessive pomp,' but restraint becomes a key advantage.

Tonda PF Chronographe Mystérieux: Invisible Complexity

The best confirmation of my words is the new Chronographe Mystérieux. As the name implies, the watch is equipped with one of the most popular complications - a chronograph, which is almost invisible at first glance. The only clue is a thin button positioned at 7:30. The 40 mm case is made of stainless steel with a platinum 950 bezel. Like all Tonda PF models, these watches are designed for everyday wear: water resistance up to 100 meters and a screw-down crown confirm this. The case thickness of 13 mm is more than some of its line counterparts, but for a chronograph, it is quite acceptable.

The Magic of Chronograph Activation

In normal mode, the Chronographe Mystérieux looks like classic three-hand watches. Pressing the single button starts the chronograph: three hands made of 18-carat gold with rhodium coating - including the second hand - instantly return to the 12 o'clock mark and begin counting. The hour hand turns into a 12-hour counter, the minute hand into a minute totalizer, and the second hand into a stopwatch. At the same time, gold hour and minute hands appear in their places, continuing to show the current time.

Pressing the button again stops the chronograph, allowing easy reading of the elapsed time, while the gold hands continue to display the hours and minutes. A third press returns the rhodium-plated hands to their original position, hiding the gold ones, and the second hand takes its place at the current time. All this happens without additional counters and a second button. The solution looks elegant and functional.

Dial Aesthetics

The dial is done in a mineral blue color - richer compared to the 'stone blue' shade used in the 36-mm Tonda PF of 2024. The color perfectly matches the delicate Grain d'Orge finish (hand guilloché). Aside from the color, the other details are kept in a minimalist style: hand-applied rhodium indices of 18-carat gold and the signature logo.

New Caliber PF053

It's a pity that Parmigiani did not provide a photo of the Chronographe Mystérieux mechanism, as it deserves attention. Owners will be able to admire it through the sapphire case back, and we should expect photos from Watches and Wonders in Geneva.

The automatic caliber PF053 is equipped with a large rotor of 22-carat rose gold with Grain d'Orge guilloché, as well as perlage and anglage on the skeletonized bridges. The mechanism contains 362 components, 41 jewels, operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz), and offers a power reserve of up to 60 hours.

Final Impressions

Parmigiani Fleurier has once again created a masterpiece - the Tonda PF Chronographe Mystérieux. The brand managed to take one of the most sought-after complications, hide it, and yet make the watch incredibly attractive. Of course, I appreciate multifunctional chronographs when justified, and I even love the Tonda PF Sport Chronograph Silver Verzasca from Parmigiani. But this model is special, it operates on a completely different level.
