I am sure you have never seen a chronograph like this. At Watches & Wonders 2026, Parmigiani Fleurier introduced a chronograph that outwardly looks like a classic three-hand watch, but in reality is an entirely new model - the Tonda PF Chronographe Mystérieux.

Parmigiani Fleurier is known for its focus on private luxury - creating elegant watches designed exclusively for the pleasure and satisfaction of the owner. The brand does not strive for mass hype, yet the refinement of the Tonda PF collection in recent years has attracted the attention of high horology enthusiasts. Personally, I have the Parmigiani Fleurier GMT Rattrapante on my wrist, a model that captivated me with its hidden GMT complication with dual time zones, which I actively use while traveling. It's a pure two-hand watch that transforms into a GMT with two time zones when needed - without cluttering the dial.

This functionality was reworked and introduced in the Tonda PF Minute Rattrapante model with a unique countdown. I mention these two models and the concept of private luxury because both complications reflect Parmigiani Fleurier's special approach to watchmaking: complications that reveal themselves only when needed. They say the best things come in threes, and now we have a third model with a complication that unfolds only at the owner's discretion - the Tonda PF Chronograph Mystérieux.

Case

The watch is in the recognizable Tonda PF format: a 40 mm stainless steel case with a filigree finish and a knurled platinum bezel. It's a watch that rewards close inspection to appreciate the subtle complexity and details.

For instance, the lugs of the case resemble the cowhorn style, but are less protruding. The mirror polish on the lugs continues and tapers towards the middle of the case, forming a thin faceted edge that frames the satin-finished side surfaces of the lugs, which smoothly transition into the case.

The case thickness is 13 mm - slightly more than other models in the series, but for a chronograph with such innovative complications, it is quite justified. Considering the 100-meter water resistance and the complex movement construction, which we will discuss further, this is a very commendable feature.

Dial

The mineral blue dial at first glance seems like a classic three-hand watch. In normal mode, it shows hours, minutes, and seconds, while the thin barleycorn guilloché pattern gives the dial an exquisite texture. However, pressing the monopusher located at 7:30 for ease of use starts a real show - revealing the unique private luxury made possible by Parmigiani Fleurier's craftsmanship.

The first press triggers an instant reset and restart of the three rhodium-plated chronograph hands - transitioning from displaying civil time to the chronograph. At the same time, the rose gold hands indicating the main time, which were previously hidden, appear on the dial, continuing to track time.

The second press stops the chronograph. The elapsed time display remains clear and readable - without small counters and confusion about their purpose. You don't need to figure out which counter is for hours or minutes - the readings are as easy to read as the current time.

The third and final press resets the chronograph. The rhodium hands instantly align with the rose gold hands of the current time, and the second hand continues to move in its natural mode. It's reminiscent of a scene from "Toy Story," where the toys come to life in secret but quickly return to their places when their owner appears. The dial seems magical, although it's actually a complex mathematical and technical coordination, akin to an air traffic controller managing movements.

Thus, unlike all other chronographs with a single display, the dial maintains the purity of the three-hand format when the complication is not in use. Notably, one hand performs a dual function - it simultaneously shows the current seconds and chronograph seconds. However, it's important to note a significant nuance: when the chronograph is reset, the second hand will continue to move from the position where the chronograph stopped, rather than returning to the pre-launch point. Meanwhile, the hours and minutes maintain the correct time, so display error is excluded.

Movement

All this is made possible by the PF053 caliber - Parmigiani's own automatic integrated chronograph operating at 4 Hz with a power reserve of 60 hours. The movement is slim - only 6.8 mm thick, despite the innovative complication. It is beautifully finished and visible through a sapphire case back: the 22-carat rose gold rotor is adorned with satin-finished and faceted open bridges.

Bracelet

The bracelet is perceived not as a separate element, but as a natural extension of the case. The polished lines of the lugs smoothly transition into narrow satin-finished links that gradually taper and disappear. The bracelet is secured with a convenient butterfly folding clasp.

Final Assessment

To be honest, when the GMT Rattrapante debuted in 2022, I was amazed. When the Minute Rattrapante appeared a year later, the impression was less strong: I respected the complexity of the complication, but there was no emotional connection with the countdown timer, unlike the GMT, which I actively use.

In the world of popular complications, the chronograph occupies one of the leading positions. Many appreciate it not only for its functionality but also for its aesthetics - monochrome, panda styles, tricolor, and other counter designs. Parmigiani Fleurier wasn't solving a global problem that the broad audience was seeking, but it's hard to desire what no one has done before. This is already the third world innovation from the brand, the third model in the so-called trilogy of hidden complications.
