As a car enthusiast first and a watch lover second, I have always had a particular fondness for the Danish independent brand REC.
Their key concept - using reclaimed materials from classic cars, planes, and motorcycles - has rarely disappointed, creating truly interesting models. At the same time, it vividly illustrates the complexity of designing car-themed watches (for example, literal details like "taillights" in the REC P-51 model dedicated to the Ford Mustang). However, in its most ambitious project to date, REC takes this idea to a new level, introducing its first in-house mechanical movement combined with a refined, mature design and a piece of Ayrton Senna's legendary 1986 Lotus 98T race car. The limited edition REC 98T/4 is a significant step forward for the young Danish brand, offering a design that captivates not only with its inspiration but also with noticeably enhanced craftsmanship.

Case and Design: Lotus 98T Inspiration and Elegant Restraint
The REC 98T/4's stainless steel case, with a diameter of 39.7 mm and a thickness of 13 mm, at first glance resembles the Heuer Camaro, but the "cushion" shape here is larger, softer, and filled with thoughtful details. For example, the double-tapered profile of the case echoes the contours of the cockpit and nose of the 1986 Lotus 98T, yet it looks organic and independent, creating a smooth, natural foundation for further design development.

Unlike many previous models of the brand, the design inspiration here is kept to a minimum - which makes sense given the rarity and historical significance of the car. The case finish is also executed with high precision: radial brushing with an attractive texture on the top surface, smoother linear brushing on the sides, neatly tapered lugs, and a narrow, sloped bezel with mirror polishing. Even the trapezoidal buttons are equipped with subtle polished bevels, adding depth and elegance. Due to the square shape, the case appears larger than its actual size (approximately like a 41-42 mm round case), but the relatively small thickness and short lugs ensure a comfortable fit on a 17 cm wrist. The domed sapphire crystal case back offers a full view of the unique movement. Water resistance of 100 meters underscores the sporty nature of the model.
Dial and Material Usage: Subtle Integration of Lotus 98T Parts
The brand REC has always been known for using reclaimed materials, but in the 98T/4 dial design, this is implemented quite subtly. The outer tachymeter ring (outside the golden chronograph second scale) is made from the aluminum intake manifold taken from Ayrton Senna's Lotus 98T chassis number 4, which participated in the final races of the 1986 Formula 1 World Championship.

Car number 4 was the last of the most powerful 98Ts, as well as the last car with the legendary black and gold John Player Special livery and the last with a turbocharged Renault EF15B engine producing over 1300 hp in qualifying mode. In Senna's hands, this car achieved five pole positions, but reliability issues prevented greater success - Team Lotus finished third in the Constructors' Championship, and Senna himself was fourth in the individual standings.
REC does not make the aluminum ring the center of visual attention but uses it as an accent in the black and gold color scheme inspired by the John Player Special livery. The overall dial appearance is bold yet harmonious, with enough gold elements to look striking on the wrist without being overwhelming. The rare placement of two sub-dials at the 12 and 6 o'clock positions gives the dial a balanced, considered look. The low-contrast transitions between black on gray and gray on black in the sub-dial scales create a sense of depth and invite detailed examination.

The use of textures in the design is also impressive: from the matte black grainy main background to the satin rings of the hours and sub-dials, the brightly polished baton hands, and the sunburst finish on the central chronograph seconds scale. Despite the striking black and gold palette, the chronograph design retains its uniqueness and slightly retro style, allowing the model to be imagined in various color variations.
Movement RC-98T/4: REC's First In-House Movement with High Functionality
The automatic chronograph RC-98T/4 inside the REC 98T/4 is the brand's first in-house developed mechanical movement. However, given the Swiss origin of the caliber and the brand's Danish base, there is likely an external manufacturing partner.
Nevertheless, the RC-98T/4 is a modern, reliable chronograph with an impressive 62-hour power reserve and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. The movement is equipped with a column wheel to control the chronograph functions, providing easy and precise wrist operation, with a clearer reset feel.

Special attention is paid to the movement's finishing: the upper bridges are covered with a matte black coating with a texture reminiscent of the Lotus 98T valve covers, while the lower bridges and balance feature fine perlage. The column wheel is adorned with polishing and highlighted by a frame, and the rotor with black and gold finish and number 12 is a tribute to Ayrton Senna. Such movement decoration is rarely seen in watches of this price category.
To complete the look, REC pairs the watch with a black leather strap with a deployant clasp. The strap with soft lining and perforation imitation adds texture without distracting from the watch. The double-button clasp is solid and adds weight, ensuring comfort during extended wear.
Conclusion: REC 98T/4 - Maturity and Quality in a Limited Edition
The independent Danish brand REC has always been able to create interesting models inspired by classic cars, but with the REC 98T/4, it makes a qualitative leap from merely engaging watches to a truly mature, high-class product. The watches demonstrate sophistication, quality, and maturity in all aspects - case, dial, and movement.
A total of 989 pieces of the REC 98T/4 will be released. The model is available for order on the brand's official platform. The recommended retail price at the time of publication is USD 4,195.
