Of all the inhabitants of the world's oceans, sharks might be the most misunderstood by humanity. The vast majority of shark species are not aggressive towards humans but play a vital role in oceanic ecosystems as apex predators. The lemon shark is a perfect example of this. Lemon sharks, primarily found off the coast of Florida, use their yellow coloration to blend in with the sea floor and ambush their preferred diet of fish and crustaceans. Although the lemon shark poses no threat to humans, it is currently listed as endangered in its natural habitat due to human activities. Ulysse Nardin, a brand with extensive aquatic resource ties, has long advocated for ocean conservation. For its latest model, the brand teamed up with Florida International University and the non-profit organization OCEARCH to draw attention to these creatures. The new limited edition Ulysse Nardin Diver Lemon Shark is created in honor of this joint project, adding a clean and aggressive touch to the brand's entry-level diver line.

The Ulysse Nardin Diver Lemon Shark's case, made of stainless steel with black DLC coating, measures 42 mm and reflects the bold and modern style of the long-standing Diver line. All elements of the Diver series, from the stepped line framing the tapering lugs to the large-toothed bezel with a partially rubberized striped insert, are present here, but the use of matte and abrasive black DLC coating gives this familiar shape a new stealthy and masculine character. Ulysse Nardin tempers this dark monochrome look with bright lemon-yellow accents on the bezel and signed crown, as well as an eye-catching yellow gasket for the sapphire crystal. Another new element of individuality is introduced in the massive caseback with a highly detailed and textured engraving of three lemon sharks swimming in formation. Like the standard Diver model, the Diver Lemon Shark is rated for water resistance up to 300 meters.

Like the case, the dial of the Ulysse Nardin Diver Lemon Shark uses the brand's familiar design cues and reimagines them in a new masculine color scheme. The dial's surface is sandblasted and matte black, allowing the polished indices and petal hands to stand out vividly. Similarly, the lemon-yellow elements of the second hand, minute track, and the dial inscription at the “6 o'clock” position add enough color to stand out in images but do not overwhelm the predominant somber black of the design. This mood is further emphasized by the unique Diver Lemon Shark's “shark grey” lume, reducing contrast for a more tactical modern style. Finally, as with previous 42 mm Ulysse Nardin Diver models, the Diver Lemon Shark's round date window at the “6 o'clock” position adds practical functionality without disrupting visual symmetry or any indices.

Ulysse Nardin equips the Diver Lemon Shark with the automatic UN-816 movement based on the Sellita SW300. Discounting the implications of using a third-party movement at this price point, the UN-816's specifications are unremarkable even for entry-level sports watches. The UN-816 offers a 42-hour power reserve at a frequency of 28,800 beats per hour. Ulysse Nardin complements the Diver Lemon Shark's design, inspired by conservation, with a unique R-STRAP system. This fabric strap with a hook-and-loop closure is made from 100% recycled materials sourced from fishing nets collected off the coast of France, with a black DLC-coated titanium clasp and contrasting lemon-yellow stitching.

While mechanically the Ulysse Nardin Diver Lemon Shark, released in a limited series, is not outstanding, it features an aggressive modern look that dramatically changes the perception of the basic Diver line, drawing attention to the critical task of ocean wildlife conservation.
Only 300 pieces of the Ulysse Nardin Diver Lemon Shark will be produced, available now through authorized dealers for $7,300 USD. For more information, visit the brand's website.
