Key Takeaways

  • Yema Granvelle Renaissance CMM.29 offers affordable luxury with a unique design.
  • Inspired by French architecture, the watch features a cushion-shaped case.
  • Equipped with an impressive in-house micro-rotor movement, showcasing technical excellence.

Yema is currently producing some of the most fascinating watches in the entry-level luxury segment.

Today, they introduced the Granvelle Renaissance CMM.29, which we have had the opportunity to test over the past three weeks. This model occupies a very appealing niche - it can be described as 'affordable high-end watchmaking in a sports style.' To draw an analogy, it's akin to a budget-friendly Patek Philippe Aquanaut.

I reviewed the manufacturer's press release to understand their concept, but this review will focus on my personal experience of wearing and interacting with the watch. I must immediately note that I appreciate Yema's firm stance on developing their own movements and designs, where every detail is thought out, and the production line is optimized to create stylish watches at a reasonable price. The brand Oris, which produces good but rather conservative models, could learn from this promising French manufacturer.

Perfectly Crafted Design and Creation History

Yema Granvelle Renaissance CMM.29 with cushion-shaped case

The creation history of the Granvelle is inspired by the architecture of the Granvelle Palace in Besançon, France - Yema's hometown. Many elements of the case and dial borrow details from this majestic and impressive building. Even the crown is cushion-shaped, echoing the case's contours. The Yema team paid special attention to proportions, ensuring the watch sits comfortably on the wrist without losing its expressiveness. They claim that the unique cushion-shaped case allows for a compact size of 37.5 mm, while creating the impression of classic round watches with a diameter of 39 mm. After personally examining the watch, I can confirm - this is indeed the case.

Many brands like to associate new models with an interesting story, but ultimately, the watches themselves, without any accompanying emotions, must speak to collectors and enthusiasts. If you discard the legend, you still have a very attractive and harmonious model. From the first touch, it became clear that the Granvelle is perfectly balanced in size and style. For my 16.5 cm wrist, it is the optimal choice - 37.5 mm in a unique case shape with a compact lug-to-lug length of only 46.3 mm. The thickness is only 8.5 mm - almost 1 mm thinner than my Rolex Land-Dweller 36.

Dial of Yema Granvelle Renaissance with multi-level design

The cushion-shaped bezel with a slope has a fine radial brushing, feeling velvety to the touch, and plays beautifully in the light. The side of the case is adorned with vertical engraving, adding elegance and enlivening the polished surface. The dial features a multi-level design - as if you are entering an ancient Roman amphitheater. A narrow ring with minute markings smoothly transitions into three steps descending to the center, which is decorated with a motif inspired by the patterns of the Granvelle Palace roof.

On the left side of the dial, a small cutout in the hour track accommodates an additional seconds sub-dial. The hour markers are thin applied batons, small in size to maintain harmony with the overall design. The hour hand is recessed into the central part and seems to float above the decorative motif, aligning with the final level of the stepped dial. The minute hand is long and thin, rising above the highest step of the dial. Overall, the design is masterfully executed, creating an impressive depth for a compact watch.

Micro-Rotor Movement

Yema Granvelle's micro-rotor movement visible

Yema is known for its impressive in-house movements, and the Granvelle Renaissance is equipped with the CMM.29 caliber, which is almost identical in appearance to the CMM.20 from the Superman Slim model, which we also tested. The movement is visible through the transparent case back. The main feature is the micro-rotor, which is not only aesthetically pleasing but also has a solid and confident appearance, smoothly rotating in its compartment.

Decorative bridges of Yema Granvelle movement

As with other Yema models, attention to detail and movement architecture becomes more apparent with prolonged study. The caliber bridges are rhodium-plated and feature a galvanic coating with a decorative sunray Côtes de Genève pattern, highlighting the sporty yet high-class character of the watch.

In addition to its appearance, the movement boasts impressive technical specifications: precision close to chronometer standards (-3/+7 seconds per day), a generous 70-hour power reserve, and increased anti-magnetic resistance. Another unique aspect is that the movement production and assembly are entirely carried out in the French town of Morteau, which is a pleasant departure from the Swiss tradition.

The only aspect I didn't like is the audibility of the micro-rotor in operation. It seemed noisier to me than regular full-sized rotors. I hope this is a feature of my specific piece, as it is likely easily remedied by Yema watchmakers.

Final Impressions

It's very encouraging to see a European brand outside Switzerland daring to experiment with design without sacrificing accuracy and build quality. If companies like Christopher Ward are at the forefront of mass production with experimental elements, Yema takes a step forward by prioritizing craftsmanship and respect for heritage. Although this may limit the brand's scale and production volumes, true connoisseurs appreciate these characteristics - when a brand focuses on the essentials and creates watches with deep meaning.

Like most modern Yema models, the Granvelle Renaissance demonstrates impeccable craftsmanship and wearing comfort while maintaining a reasonable price - 2100 euros. The brand has carved out a unique position in the watch world, and this model is a clear testament to that.
