The modern market for sports watches with integrated bracelets is becoming increasingly saturated, making it truly challenging to make an impression.
Only a few models manage to gain instant recognition. In 2022, the Sino-French brand Atelier Wen caused a real stir with its Perception model, proving that high-quality traditional watchmaking doesn't have to originate from Switzerland. With its expressive design and outstanding guilloché dials, Atelier Wen created a collection loved by watch enthusiasts. At the end of 2023, the Perception V2 appeared with a number of well-thought-out updates. Now, with the release of the Perception V3, the brand presents its most significant update yet - an improved caliber and a new finishing option make this series the best to date.

The Concept of Sports Watches with Integrated Bracelets by Atelier Wen
The Perception design immediately stood out against its counterparts due to its successful interpretation of classic forms in the sports watch category. Particular attention is drawn to the hand-guilloché dials crafted in the workshop of Cheng Yucai. Among the dial options, the Millésime Perception Xuán with a pietersite dial was especially memorable - a unique model that Mike wrote about earlier this year. Despite the variety of options, the Perception series consistently stands out for its aesthetics and excellent fit on the wrist, making it one of the best among modern sports watches with integrated bracelets.

Key Updates of Atelier Wen Perception V3
For the new Perception V3 version, Atelier Wen decided to make significant changes. The main innovation is the new caliber - the brand replaced the Chinese Dandong SL1588A with the French Pequignet EPM03. This movement was already used in the Ancestra series, and the Inflection series employed the Girard-Perregaux GP03300 caliber. The transition from Chinese movements to European ones is gradual and logical.

In addition to the new caliber, a new finish has appeared in the series - the Yún version with a Bamboo Green dial and unique micro-brushed surface, complemented by contrasting mirror-polished facets of the case and bracelet. This approach gives the watch a modern and unusual look reminiscent of titanium, unlike the more classic options with blue or salmon dials.
Technical Specifications of Perception V3
- Case Diameter: 40 mm
- Case Thickness: 10.4 mm (1 mm thicker than the V2 version due to the new caliber)
- Case Length: 47 mm
- Material: 904L stainless steel
- Mid-case Thickness: approximately 5 mm
- Integrated Bracelet: 22/18 mm, with micro-brushed finish (in Yún version)
- Clasp: with screw links, tool-free micro-adjustments, telescopic folding clasp 2.6 mm thick (0.4 mm thinner than the previous version)
Thanks to the thin case design and quality finishing, the Perception V3 visually appears much thinner than the numbers suggest.

Unique Guilloché Dials by Master Cheng Yucai
All three new models feature the familiar hand-guilloché dials with a "fish scale" pattern (écailles de poisson), created in the workshop of Cheng Yucai. This master gained recognition for the four-part dials inspired by ancient Chinese architectural principles of Sunmao.

The minute ring is adorned with a traditional Chinese huiwen pattern, applied with white lume Super-LumiNova X1, which glows in the dark along with the leaf-shaped hour and minute hands, also covered in lume. Rhodium-plated hour markers are modest but perfectly sized for maximum dial perception.

Over the past four years, the brand has introduced numerous color schemes, but the vibrant green dial of the Yún version stands out particularly. It resembles the jade shade of the special Wristcheck × seconde/seconde/ × Atelier Wen Perception 2023 edition and pairs excellently with the case's micro-brushed finish.

Modified Pequignet EPM03 Caliber
The EPM03 caliber operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and provides a power reserve of 65 hours. It is chronometer-certified with an accuracy of -4/+6 seconds per day, average ±2 seconds, which significantly surpasses the previous Chinese mechanism. For the first time in the Perception series, a hacking seconds function is implemented.

The movement's decoration is executed with regard to Chinese culture: the bridges have a fan-shaped form and are covered with mirror-polished blue aventurine, the escape bridge features wave-like Côtes de Genève stripes, the winding wheel has 3D laser engraving, and the screws are finished with black polishing. There is also machine-processed anglage, perlage, spiral barrel, and a rotor with combined finishing. This level of finishing makes the caliber visually outstanding and significantly surpasses the closed Chinese movement.

Comfort and Impressions of Wearing the Perception V3
Despite the increased thickness, the watch feels very thin and comfortable on the wrist. The bracelet softly hugs the hand, and the matte micro-brushed finish with contrasting facets creates a slight shimmering effect when moving. Particular attention is drawn to the sharp screw-down crown with a huiwen pattern and the neat polishing of the clasp's facets.

The question of whether these watches are the perfect sports watches with integrated bracelets remains open, but the Perception V3 comes very close. The only aspect that raises doubts is the leaf-style hands' shape, which seems somewhat classic. However, after a few days of wearing, this becomes less noticeable.

Final Assessment of the Updated Atelier Wen Perception V3 Series
The Perception V3 update demonstrates that even a successful series can become better. The new French caliber with high precision and impressive finishing enhances the model's status. The harmonious combination of traditional Chinese culture and European watchmaking craftsmanship adds a unique character to the watches.

The design remains fresh, with the new color scheme and finishing giving the watches lightness and modernity. The question of the micro-brushed surface's scratch resistance remains open, but this does not diminish the enjoyment of wearing the watch. The Yún version is an impressive addition to the Perception lineup and possibly my personal favorite among the updated models.

Example of a Successful Update
Atelier Wen Perception V3 is available for pre-order on the brand's official website for €4,200 / US$4,850. The first 300 pieces will go on sale in September 2026. The series is not limited, making the watches available in the long term.

Considering the technical specifications and finishing, the Perception V3 is the best sports chronometer with an integrated bracelet in the under €5,000 price segment. Even with a doubled budget, I would choose this model.

This study highlights the significance of the Atelier Wen Perception V3 as one of the leaders in the segment of sports watches with integrated bracelets, thanks to a combination of innovation, tradition, and high-quality execution.
