Today marked the premiere of the Atelier Wen Perception V3. What new features does this version offer?

First, a brief reminder of the background. The Atelier Wen brand entered the market in 2018, but the real breakthrough came in 2022 with the release of the Perception model. It attracted collectors' attention due to its combination of craftsmanship and everyday wear features at a more affordable price. With a Kickstarter price slightly above $2,000 USD and a retail price around $2,500, buyers received a watch with a dial guilloché by a craftsman in China, housed in a stainless steel case with 100-meter water resistance and an integrated design, along with a Chinese movement that kept the price reasonable.

The use of a Chinese caliber was justified from both an economic and conceptual standpoint - the brand aims to combine Chinese artistic craftsmanship with modern watches. In 2023, the V2 version was released, featuring subtle refinements based on community feedback and a survey with 400 respondents. Changes included a more pronounced tapered bracelet, a reduced folding clasp element, and other small adjustments. It's nice to see that the brand listens carefully to customers and implements their wishes. The retail price of the V2 increased to $3,288 USD.

Case

The case of the new Perception V3 model is made of 904L steel and at first glance appears almost unchanged. The diameter is 40 mm and the lug-to-lug distance is 47 mm - optimal parameters for everyday watches with an integrated stainless steel bracelet. According to the brand, the watch feels on the wrist like a 38–39 mm, which may seem paradoxical, but it is true. This is due to the shape of the lugs: they have a more pronounced downward slope rather than flaring outward, making the watch look and feel more compact.

The case thickness has increased by 1 mm - it is now 10.4 mm. Although in the integrated design segment, a thickness of less than 10 mm is considered an achievement, the additional millimeter is a justified compromise, which will be discussed below.

Besides the increased thickness, the quality of the case finish has noticeably improved. In versions with blue and salmon dials, more directional brushing and emphasized bevels made on a grinding wheel have been applied. The new version with a bamboo green hue features micro-sandblasting, enhancing the modern look and highlighting the mirror-finish bevels.

Dial

In addition to the new bamboo green hue, Perception maintains its signature hand-made dial with fish-scale guilloché, which requires about eight hours of a craftsman's work. This element gives the dial a luxurious texture and depth. It is worth noting that this is the first new dial for the main Perception line in the last four years.

For the uninitiated: the brand is inspired by ancient Chinese design principles and uses watch indices solely through friction - without nails or glue. Each index fits precisely into the dial's cutouts and is secured by a raised ring with an outer minute track adorned with a traditional Chinese geometric pattern. Bracelet

The Perception V3 bracelet is crafted in a unified style with the case. The new green version continues the theme of micro-sandblasting with polished accents. The bracelet's width tapers smoothly from 22 mm at the case to 18 mm at the clasp, and the link thickness decreases from 3 mm to 2.6 mm closer to the clasp, providing a slim and comfortable profile. The clasp features a patented micro-adjustment system activated by the Atelier Wen logo, and the folding lever has become more compact, making the bracelet comfortable even for thin wrists.

Movement

The key innovation of the Perception V3 is the new French-made automatic movement - a customized Pequignet calibre EPM03. This is not just a standard caliber, but a unique version with a traditional Chinese wind pattern on the bridges, covered with mirror-finished blue aventurine, creating the effect of a starry night sky.

Movement Finish Includes:

• Laser engraving on the reversing wheel
• Black polished screws
• Anglage (machine edge finishing)
• Pearlage and spiral pattern on the mainspring barrel

For those who disliked partially open case backs, a fully transparent case back is now available, allowing for a view of the meticulously finished movement.

Final Evaluation

In the context of rising watch prices, the risk of doubling the base collection's price is a serious decision. However, the price increase is justified by a significant increase in value: improved case and bracelet finishing, as well as a unique movement with exclusive design and high-level execution.

The use of aventurine lacquer on the bridges is a rare and technically challenging solution, underscoring the brand's commitment to innovation and quality.

For those who expected only a color change while maintaining the previous price, there may be some disappointment, but the development and improvement of the model is a natural and necessary process. Ultimately, the Perception V3 remains an attractive offering with a considerable amount of handcrafting and unique elements, maintaining a reasonable price level compared to the brand's more expensive models.
