IWC Pilot’s Watch Mark XX Le Petit Prince Review

When the IWC Mark XX Pilot’s watches were released in 2022, Le Petit Prince models were notably absent, despite the availability of blue dial versions.

In 2026, the Le Petit Prince series returns with several new models, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the collaboration between IWC and the heirs of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The lineup includes two Mark XX models with updated design and a new case material of ultra-luxury.

Features of the New IWC Le Petit Prince Mark XX Models

The two new Le Petit Prince Mark XX models are crafted in stainless steel and 18-karat 5N gold, a first for this series. Previously, 18K gold was used only for complex models and the Big Pilot, but never for time-only watches. The case dimensions remain consistent with the Mark XX series: a 40mm diameter, 20mm lug width, and 100 meters water resistance thanks to a screw-down crown.

The gold model features a transparent case back with an engraving of the Little Prince, while the steel version has a solid case back with the same image. The case thickness of the gold model is 10.1mm, whereas the steel model is 10.8mm, due to the presence of a ferrite anti-magnetic shield in the latter.

Dial Design and Materials

Previously, Le Petit Prince models were distinguished by blue dials with white numerals and silvery hands. With the advent of the Mark XX, this color scheme became part of the main Pilot’s line. To differentiate the collaborative models from standard blue Mark XX, the new Le Petit Prince features a deep blue sunburst dial with gold-plated hands coated with SuperLuminova.

The steel model has printed indices, while the gold model uses 18K gold applied indices, matching the hands. The dial is protected by a sapphire crystal with double-sided anti-reflective coating, installed to prevent displacement during sudden atmospheric pressure changes - an important feature of true pilot's instruments. As with other Mark XX models, there is a date at the 3 o'clock position.

Straps and Attachment System

Both models come with blue rubber straps featuring the proprietary EasX-CHANGE quick-change system, allowing easy swapping of IWC straps and bracelets. Despite the proprietary system, the watches use standard spring bars, permitting the use of any 20mm wide straps. The steel version is fitted with a classic steel clasp, while the gold model has an 18K 5N gold clasp.

Movement and Technical Specifications

Both models are powered by the automatic IWC caliber IW32112 - a slightly modified version of the IW32111, known from many date-function models. The balance frequency is 28,800 vibrations per hour, the movement contains 21 jewels, and the power reserve reaches 120 hours. The automatic winding system features a ball-bearing rotor with bidirectional winding.

The movements are produced at the ValFleurier factory, part of the Richemont group, and undergo fine-tuning and decoration at IWC. The decoration includes Geneva striping and perlage, visible through the transparent case back of the gold model, while the steel model has a solid case back.

IWC's Pilot’s series traditionally commands respect, and the absence of new Le Petit Prince models in 2022 was noticeable. Four years later, the new models return, and it's not just a dial color update - changes in hand design and case materials make them more unique. While the new hand shape is not revolutionary, it significantly alters the character of the watch. The black dial Mark XX remains the most instrumental solution for pilots, but the blue color and gold elements make the Le Petit Prince model more suited to reflect the legacy and history of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's legendary novel.
