When I hear the name Mido, the first models that come to mind are the Ocean Star watches - designs inspired by the past.
I like the Ocean Star Tribute, Ocean Star Decompression Worldtimer, and Ocean Star GMT. They all possess undeniable charm that is hard to ignore. However, the brand also offers a series of modern Ocean Star divers, which meet all the requirements for affordable and functional tool watches. The latest addition to these modern models is the limited edition Ocean Star 200C in carbon fiber. It takes the Ocean Star's aesthetics to a new level. Moreover, the watch is equipped with a COSC-certified Powermatic 80 movement. It's time to learn more.
When I first saw images of the new Mido Ocean Star 200C, my first association was with the Tissot Seastar Wilson WNBA model with a black dial, released two weeks ago. However, this is an unfair comparison as it is based solely on the orange accents of both watches. Upon closer inspection of the new Mido model, it becomes immediately clear that this is a completely different beast. The dial and case of the Ocean Star 200C are made from composite carbon fiber, giving the watch a very modern look. If you love the aesthetics of forged carbon, then perhaps these Mido watches are for you.
Detailed Information on the Mido Ocean Star 200C
The new Ocean Star 200C model features a 42.5 mm × 49.04 mm × 12.3 mm case with a 22 mm lug width and a diving depth of 200 meters. This case is the same size as regular stainless steel models, so the choice of carbon does not affect the size or water resistance. The material gives the modern case shape a pleasant look and feel. The carbon contrasts well with the black steel bezel with PVD coating and black ceramic insert, featuring a 60-minute dive scale. The first 15 minutes are in bright orange, while the remaining markers and numbers are in gray. Finally, at the 60-minute mark, there is a white Super-LumiNova dot.
The screw-down crown and screw-down case back are made of stainless steel with black PVD coating, with a starfish engraved on the latter, symbolizing Mido's expertise in producing waterproof watches since the 1930s. As mentioned earlier, the carbon fiber case is paired with a carbon fiber dial. The dial features applied indices with white Super-LumiNova luminescence and a day-date window at the 3 o'clock position. Notably, the "Limited Edition" text is placed between the 9, 10, and 11 o'clock markers. This is not the first place I would have thought to put these words. The "Limited Edition" inscription is also on the case back, so I am a bit puzzled as to why Mido placed it on the dial.
COSC-Certified Movement
Three hands float above the dial, each differing in appearance. The diamond-cut hour and minute hands share a similar skeletonized design, but the minute hand is thinner and in orange to match the orange insert on the bezel. The lollipop-style second hand beautifully completes the dial, and all three hands have white Super-LumiNova coating for better visibility in the dark.
Behind the case back is a COSC-certified version of the Swatch Group's Powermatic 80 movement. This caliber is based on the ETA C07.821 and features a silicon balance spring, as indicated by the decorative "Si" logo on the balance bridge. Additionally, the movement is equipped with blued screws and a rotor with a Geneva pattern and Mido logo. The automatic caliber operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour and has an 80-hour power reserve.
Complete the Look with Two Different Straps
Buyers of the Ocean Star 200C Carbon will receive two straps. The first is a black rubber strap, with a quick-change system, a diving extension, and a folding clasp in stainless steel with black PVD coating. The second strap differs slightly from the first if you prefer a different look. It is made of black synthetic fabric on a silicone base with orange stitching and a black stainless steel clasp with PVD coating and an engraved Mido logo. Like the first strap, the second strap is easy to switch thanks to quick-release spring bars.
The main difference between them in terms of appearance is that the rubber strap has curved ends for a visually seamless fit. Nevertheless, the hybrid strap also looks good as it adds an orange touch and has a nice texture. I like that Mido offers two black straps that differ in appearance. As a result, despite the same colors, you can mix and match them excellently.
Final Opinion on the Mido Ocean Star 200C Carbon Fiber
This novelty will appeal to you if you love modern dive watches with a racing flair. The use of carbon fiber radically transforms the Ocean Star. Although I am not the biggest fan of carbon fiber in watches, I believe Mido's choice of this material for the case and dial was successful. It sharply enhances the racing vibes and gives the watch a unique character.
The new Mido Ocean Star 200C watches will be released in a limited edition of 888 pieces priced at €2,450 / CHF 2,050 / US$2,200. This is a significant price increase compared to €1,190 for the regular stainless steel version (or €1,350 for the titanium version, if you prefer). However, in return, you get a different, lightweight case material and a COSC-certified movement. The limited edition of 888 pieces is already on sale, and I am confident that Mido will quickly sell all available pieces. Many watch enthusiasts will enjoy the modern look of these Mido Ocean Star 200C Carbon watches. Although I still prefer vintage Ocean Star models, this limited edition perfectly showcases the versatility of the Ocean Star line.
