It has been just over four years since Swatch and Omega surprised the world with the launch of MoonSwatch.

After the official announcement of the collaborative series of bioceramic watches inspired by the legendary Speedmaster, there was a huge buzz. Four years later, interest in new releases remains strong, confirming the enduring success of MoonSwatch. Although collaborations with Blancpain and Audemars Piguet have since attracted attention, Swatch continues to release impressive versions of MoonSwatch. To date, more than 30 models have been presented! In this article, we will look at five of our favorites.

Selecting the five best MoonSwatch models was no easy task. Beyond reviewing all the models, opinions on the best options varied greatly. Among the participants of WatchTested, different versions could be heard. Ultimately, we settled on five watches that we consider the best to complement the MoonSwatch collection. In this article, we will focus on the design of the models and the watches they are dedicated to. Specifications will not be discussed in detail since all MoonSwatch watches have the same 42mm bioceramic case, 13.58mm thickness, and 20mm lug width. All are equipped with ETA quartz calibers. Depending on the model, the mechanism may have additional functions, but the MoonSwatch wearing experience remains unchanged. Let's start our review of our five choices.

Omega × Swatch Speedmaster MoonSwatch Mission to Mars

The first on the list is the Mission to Mars - a model inspired by the Speedmaster Alaska Project watch. The 2008 reference Speedmaster Alaska Project (311.32.42.30.04.001) is one of my favorite modern Speedys outside the vintage series. This modern replica of the prototype is one of the most interesting watches, and the MoonSwatch Mission to Mars pays homage to this iconic model. It is a red bioceramic case Omega × Swatch Speedmaster with a white bezel, white dial, and the famous red rocket-shaped hands. These hands are inspired by NASA's Mercury rocket and help astronauts better read the information from the sub-dials.

As with all MoonSwatch watches, the layout of the sub-dials differs slightly from the original Moonwatch: the seconds hand is located at the "6 o'clock" position, the minute counter at "10 o'clock," and the 1/10 second indicator at "2 o'clock." Swatch and Omega have carefully integrated all the small details of the Speedmaster to make the watch truly unique.

The white bezel is adorned with the famous dot over 90. The sub-dials have a circular graining pattern and are slightly recessed. The dial replicates the signature stepped design of the Speedmaster on the outer edge. For convenience, the hour markers and hands glow in the dark. An interesting touch is the engraved "S" in the center of the plastic crystal, where the original Moonwatch made of hesalite usually has the Omega logo.

Best of the Original MoonSwatch

On the back of the battery cover is an image of the planet Mars. In the original series, battery covers are decorated with images of planets, stars, or satellites after which the watches are named. Mission to Mars comes on a white velcro strap with a red keeper matching the case.

The strap also bears the "Speedmaster," "MoonSwatch," and "Mission to Mars" logos. Personally, I believe that this model looks best on the original white velcro strap since the prototype watches came with a similar strap. Of the entire first series of MoonSwatch, priced at about €275, the Mission to Mars remains the best release.

Omega × Swatch Speedmaster MoonSwatch Mission on Earth – Lava

Second place goes to the model from the Mission on Earth series, introduced by Swatch in 2024. The series includes three versions: Lava, Polar Lights, and Desert. All three have so-called "radial dials."

The radial arrangement of numbers on the sub-dials is inspired by the printed elements of the Speedmaster Project Alaska II and III models developed by Omega for NASA. All three models have the same battery cover with an image of Earth. Of the three options, we chose Lava because it not only looks impressive but also refers to the famous 1969 "Ultraman" Speedy.

The Lava case is made of dark orange bioceramic with a black bezel and black dial with orange accents. The dial resembles the Speedy Tuesday II from 2018, but without the distinctive Ultraman details (the character's profile on the sub-dial and the orange minute counter). Completing the look is a black velcro strap with an orange keeper, orange stitching, and white-orange printing. A second glance at the MoonSwatch Mission on Earth – Lava reminds us how interesting this model is in Swatch's extensive collection over the past four years. It's a simple and obvious choice for second place.

Omega × Swatch Speedmaster MoonSwatch Mission To The Moonphase – Full Moon, or "White Snoopy"

Exactly two years after the release of the first series of 11 MoonSwatch, Swatch introduced the white "Snoopy" version. The brand kept fans intrigued by this special series for a long time, which generated significant online interest. The Snoopy series is one of the most popular among Omega Speedmaster. MoonSwatch Snoopy is crafted in an all-white bioceramic case with a white dial and white velcro strap. The series is dedicated to NASA's mascot dog, drawn by Charles M. Schulz.

Snoopy is depicted on a special moon phase sub-dial at the "2 o'clock" position. It replaces the 1/10 second indicator and adds a new function that is convenient and easy to set. By pulling the crown to the third position and pressing the button at "4 o'clock," you can switch the moon phase disc. Depending on the length of the press, the disc moves by the hour, day, or moves continuously, allowing you to precisely set the moon phase.

Impressive Small Details

Another interesting feature is only visible under ultraviolet light: when the moon phase sub-dial is illuminated, Snoopy appears sleeping on a blue crescent surrounded by blue stars. Also, the dial displays the phrase "I can’t sleep without a night light!" When the UV light is turned off, these elements disappear.

Snoopy fans will recognize his pose from Peanuts cartoons. Another detail is the image of the Moon on the battery cover in the style of Charles Schulz's drawings. It even includes a tiny Snoopy located where Apollo 11 landed. Such little things make "White Snoopy" one of the best models in the MoonSwatch series.

Omega × Swatch Speedmaster MoonSwatch 1965

The next model debuted in March 2025. The Omega × Swatch Speedmaster MoonSwatch "1965" is dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the Omega Speedmaster's qualification for NASA.

The release of the watch caused a huge buzz reminiscent of the reaction to the first MoonSwatch series in 2022.

Upon first inspecting the watch, we noticed a "mistake" on the box - the inscription "Speedamaster" instead of "Speedmaster." This seemed to be a humorous detail known to Swatch, which sparked discussions. The model became the 30th variant in the Omega × Swatch MoonSwatch collection. It refers to the white dial Moonwatch released by Omega in March 2024. The clean white dial combined with the black bezel resembles a beautiful white enamel Moonwatch dial.

Special Details

The dial is adorned with an applied black Omega logo similar to that used on the Speedmaster ref. 105.003 from 1965 - a model qualified for space flights by NASA (but not certified). Additionally, the watch features a characteristic chronograph second hand mechanism used in models 105.003, 105.012, and 145.012, which Omega reintroduced in 2021 for the modern Moonwatch.

Under ultraviolet light, the numbers 19, 65, and 60 glow on the dial - a nod to the 60th anniversary of the Speedmaster's qualification in 1965. The gray stitching on the gray velcro strap also glows. After turning off the UV light, only the hands and hour markers glow.

Overall, this is one of the most serious and best MoonSwatch models in the past four years. While it won't replace the original Speedy, it is a very worthy version based on one of the best Moonwatch. This makes the MoonSwatch 1965 an excellent fourth choice in our list.

Omega × Swatch Speedmaster MoonSwatch Mission to the Moon 1969

The final model is the newest, presented just last week. The Omega × Swatch Speedmaster MoonSwatch Mission to the Moon 1969 was a real surprise for several reasons. Firstly, it looks stunning. The black and gold combination is traditionally elegant and gives the watch a special charm. Secondly, the announcement took place at exactly 09:32 EDT (15:32 CEST) - the launch time of the Saturn V rocket on the Apollo 11 mission in 1969. This marks the beginning of the historic expedition from July 16 to 24, 1969, during which Neil Armstrong first set foot on the Moon. This history makes the watch one of the most significant in the series of more than 30 models.

New Golden Standard of MoonSwatch

Swatch used 11 grams of real Moonshine Gold to create the watch. The company reprocessed Omega's gold spare parts and produced 18-carat Moonshine Gold at its own foundry. The price of the watch takes into account the cost of 11 grams of gold in 1969 (48 Swiss francs, about 11 US dollars then). At the current gold price of about €75 per gram, the €600 price for the watch seems advantageous.

Gold is used for the dial and hands, as well as for the crown and chronograph buttons. These gold elements contrast beautifully with the black bioceramic case. The black bezel features a gold-colored tachymetric scale. The watch is equipped with gold hour and minute hands with a black central chronograph hand, which repeat the design of the Omega Moonshine Gold Speedmaster Apollo 11 2019 - another tribute to Speedy's history.

On the side of the case, a unique number from the limited series of 1969 pieces is engraved. The battery cover is decorated with a gold Moon with the landing date and the inscription "Mission To The Moon." It also features the famous astronaut footprint.

The watch comes on a black rubber strap with gold details, completing the stylish look. This is one of the best, if not the best, MoonSwatch model to date and a worthy fifth choice in our ranking.
