When Citizen introduced the model (later named Tsuyosa) in 2022, it caused quite a stir.
The 1970s-style watches with an integrated bracelet offered a lot for their price. This year, the Citizen Tsuyosa returns with a new version - Small Second. The collection now includes three new models in blue, green, and gray. The latter comes with a leather strap, while the others feature a new version of the Tsuyosa integrated bracelet.
I had the chance to work with all three watches. Let's see how I liked the new model from Japan.
New Citizen Tsuyosa Small Second
At first glance, these are very distinct Citizen Tsuyosa watches. The recognizable case shape, bracelet, and dial are present. The characteristic 4 o'clock crown is also retained. The dimensions remain the same - 40 mm × 11.7 mm × 45.7 mm (52 mm including the first fixed central links). However, take a closer look, and you'll see quite a few changes. Let's start with the obvious: the new versions feature a small second sub-dial at the 6 o'clock position. What's in a name, right?
Another fairly obvious change is the dial texture. The new models have a stamped pattern, strongly reminiscent of classic guilloché dials. There's also another significant difference that might initially escape your attention. The bracelet has a much wider central link than the models with a central second hand. Although the quick-release system remains, this means that the same bracelets and straps do not fit the Tsuyosa Small Second as they do other versions. However, you can purchase several leather straps to switch styles as you wish.
Another update is inside the 50-meter water-resistant case. The Citizen 8322 movement replaces the 8210. The power reserve is increased to 60 hours from 42. Furthermore, it is made to higher standards. The caliber features a skeletonized rotor, stripes, and a silver finish, unlike the bare brass 8210.
These Watches Offer a Fantastic Price
When I hold these Tsuyosa Small Second watches, I experience two opposing feelings. Let me start with the positives. I am deeply impressed with how much watch you get for your money. I don't just mean the technical specifications. Yes, they are sufficiently water-resistant, slim, automatic watches with sapphire glass and a bracelet. For 379 euros, that's already pretty good.
What truly impresses is how these features are presented. The bracelet feels substantial, the surface finish exceeds its capabilities, and even the movement looks quite decent. The dials are, of course, stamped. However, the pattern is quite clear, creating a convincing guilloché effect, which you wouldn't expect from watches at this price. The watches weigh 145 grams on a full-size bracelet and even feel quite hefty, conveying a sense of quality.
I can easily consider these watches as transitional. Indeed, for 379 euros, you can get much of what we all love in good watches. Even the bracelet, which is usually a sign of a budget model, feels sturdy. It stretches comfortably and has a reliable dual-sided hidden clasp. Of course, it could be made thinner, but that would significantly increase the price. Overall, the Citizen Tsuyosa Small Second impressed me with its value for money even more than its central siblings for €299.
Is It Worth Calling This a Fusion Design?
So, let's move on to the second feeling I experience when I hold the Citizen Tsuyosa Small Second. If I were to describe this impression in an exclusively positive way, I would say it's a fusion design. Although, truth be told, I believe there's room for criticism aesthetically.
First of all, the bracelet was adapted, but not in the right way. It remains too round compared to the case. These two models simply don't look similar in design language. The width of the central link is not the issue. I believe that with a flatter and more angular bracelet, the watch would look much better. Secondly, the dial and hand are clearly inspired by the Rolex Oyster Perpetual, so the guilloché pattern and additional dial look out of place and even anachronistic.
The design seems to be a collage of familiar elements. That's fine, as it can indeed be a very cool blend of styles and eras. But I feel that the individual elements could be combined more cohesively. A more aromatic "Tsuyosa" sauce could be used to tie everything together. Just imagine if the movie had more of a "Citizen" style. It feels like Citizen held back to not compete with its more expensive offerings. The brand didn't need to do that, as these higher-end models have many distinctions, even if the design were more similar.
Living with the Citizen Tsuyosa Small Second
As mentioned, there are three dial options to choose from. There's a version labeled as green (9NK5010-51X), but in my opinion, it's more bronze with a mustard hue. Then there's the blue dial (NK5010-51L), very bright and summery, with a hint of petrol. And finally, the more serious and restrained gray dial (NK5010-01H). It looks the most luxurious and cohesive, especially on a leather strap.
These watches wear very well. On my 17.5 cm wrist, they appear solidly sporty. I would say they could be slightly smaller, but this is more due to a slight excess of negative space on the dials than how the case sits on the wrist. The bracelet is incredibly comfortable and closes with a reassuring click. If you take care of them, I am sure these watches and bracelets will serve you well for a long time. For their price, they are well-made.
The crown excites me less. It certainly looks neat at the 4 o'clock position. However, it's difficult to manage, especially when winding the watch if it's out of energy. Nevertheless, if you wear them daily, this should be a rare occurrence. Setting the time didn't cause me much trouble, as the crown extends quite far.
Yes or No Regarding the Citizen Tsuyosa Small Second?
So, as you have already understood, the Citizen Tsuyosa Small Second evoked both positive and negative feedback from me. In terms of quality, these watches punch well above their weight. In terms of design, I was left unsatisfied. So, what's the final verdict? Would I recommend these watches?
In a word, yes! Why? Because the quality and value are simply fantastic compared to competitors in this price segment. The Tsuyosa watches have a certain solidity and sophistication that is hard to find in the under 1000 euro category. On the other hand, the design might appeal to you despite the shortcomings I've described. If so, there's virtually nothing to complain about.
