"Bioceramic" is the latest term added to the extensive repository of materials, styles, products, and technologies of the Swatch brand. In this case, Bioceramic refers to a new ceramic material formula currently used exclusively by Swatch within the Swatch Group. Swatch introduced it (virtually) in a fun video presentation that significantly surpassed the production level of most other digital watch release events over the past year (for which they deserve thanks).
Delving into history, we learn that Bioceramic is a blend of castor bean oil and traditional zirconium oxide. Mixed forms of ceramic composites are by no means new. Castor bean oil is a natural compound derived from plants that has been used for various medical and industrial purposes over the years. Castor bean oil can be used to produce plastic, which, combined with ceramic, creates Swatch's Bioceramic. I expect Swatch to continue actively experimenting with this new material in their products for a few more years.
Since castor bean oil can be grown, it is sometimes referred to as an environmentally friendly material, which, combined with its organic origin, gives the "bio" part of the Bioceramic name. Note that in countries like Europe, "bio" is also a way of expressing the term "organic," which is used in the USA.
Swatch hopes that this new material will be visually and tactilely appealing to users, and its story will help create a connection between Swatch products and the public's interest in ecology. Perhaps Swatch likes the concept of Bioceramic so much because it allows them to celebrate an exclusive material and connect the experience of wearing a wristwatch with a topic of significant importance in people's conversations.

Bioceramic debuts in a new product collection within the larger Swatch Big Bold collection. To start, there are many models presented here, and almost as many Bioceramic case colors, including black, white, gray, pink, and blue. The material itself is very similar to a synthesis of plastic and ceramic. This means it is very resistant to color change while remaining smooth to the touch. Swatch does not say anything about its durability, but I assume it provides the flexibility of plastic production with the added hardness and wear resistance of ceramic. This is important to note because a new watch case material is not always an improvement over what came before. Today, many relatively fragile materials are used in watch cases because they are fashionable or have interesting colors and patterns. A truly innovative new watch case material is one that offers superior wear resistance along with a new color or visual aesthetic capable of catching the eye.

The Swatch Big Bold collection features XL-sized watches with a width of 47 mm and a thickness of 11.75 mm. They are very comfortable and elegantly worn thanks to their light weight and wrist-hugging case and strap design. The large visual proportions and bowl-shaped design create a sense of friendliness and modernity. The watch case is water-resistant to 30 meters and has a plastic glass over the dial. These particular Big Bold Bioceramic watches are reference SBO3B100 C-Black in an all-black color. In my view, this is not the best option for showcasing Bioceramic, as black is not that uncommon in watch cases. Black on black in this reference looks stealthy and masculine, but it is probably one of the less distinctive iterations of the Swatch Big Bold Bioceramic. I really like the black-orange example from the collection, known as reference SBO3M104 Big Bold Bioceramic Orack.

Inside the watch is a Swiss-made Swatch quartz three-hand movement. I really like how they look in the skeletonized format, which is somehow a feature of all Big Bold Bioceramic models. The movement, however, is simple, and you can hear it ticking. It is very convenient that there is a battery compartment cover on the back of the case, which significantly simplifies battery replacement.
Swatch also claims that the watch strap is made from "bio-based" material. In my opinion, it is very similar to silicone, but it makes sense that Swatch wants to create the most cohesive "bio" theme for these watches. While the Swatch Big Bold collection may not appeal to everyone, Bioceramic as a material should be on the radar of watch enthusiasts as it makes its way into other products.
The price of the Swatch Big Bold Bioceramic C-Black is 125 USD. Learn more or place an order on the Swatch website.
