In the watch industry, it sometimes feels like all useful inventions have already been made.
We have been producing watches and movements for centuries, and it seems that everything that could truly change functionality and usability has already been invented. However, this was my belief until I visited TAG Heuer and learned about what they have been working on for the past five years. The result was the TAG Heuer Monaco Evergraph model with a new button operation system - an innovative solution that drastically changes tactile sensations and simplifies the construction.
Movement of TAG Heuer Monaco Evergraph
Usually, watch reviews start with the case or dial - the most visible and tangible elements, but here it's impossible to ignore a detailed examination of the movement. The new caliber TH80-00 is the result of a collaboration between TAG Heuer's team, led by Carole Kasapi, and the Swiss company Vaucher, one of the world's leading movement suppliers. Vaucher provided the base automatic movement, while TAG Heuer developed a new compliant button system and for the first time applied a carbon balance spring, which was showcased at the LVMH Watch Week this year.

The presented system replaced the traditional levers and springs needed to operate the chronograph with a single flexible element with two stable positions. When the button is pressed, this element switches from one position to another, activating the start, stop, or reset of the chronograph. Reducing the number of parts lowers the likelihood of breakdowns, enhancing reliability.

The tactile sensation of pressing the buttons is noticeably different - the action is much smoother than that of typical chronographs. Many watches have a characteristic click that appeals to mechanics enthusiasts, but often there is excessive spring stiffness, causing discomfort and fears of damaging the mechanism. In the Monaco Evergraph, the button action is natural, with enough resistance to prevent accidental presses, but without excessive effort. There is no sharp activation point - the movement is smooth and continuous. Some users may need time to adjust, but the system opens a new era in chronograph control.

The automatic movement provides a 70-hour power reserve thanks to the Vaucher base. In addition to standard time and chronograph functions, a date is available, all elements are displayed in an avant-garde style, characteristic of TAG Heuer.
Watch Case

The Monaco Evergraph case retains the classic Monaco design - a sharply defined square measuring 40 mm with two smoothly operating buttons on the right and a winding crown on the left, in line with the model's traditions. Two case finish options are available: matte grade 5 titanium or titanium with black DLC coating.
The case is not small - 40 mm square, which is clearly felt on the wrist. However, this size is justified by the need to accommodate the new chronograph movement. Wearing such a watch is not for those seeking restraint - the Monaco Evergraph is a bold statement, highlighting the owner's status and the brand's technical expertise.
Dial

The dial in this model is minimalist and functional. To emphasize the avant-garde concept, the movement is completely exposed and visible through transparent acrylic glass. Two bridges at the top and bottom hold the construction, while square chronograph counters are positioned above the complex mechanism.
The minute scale is done in white with red and white hour markers, ensuring good readability. Sword-shaped hands with luminescent coating complement the modern and concise design.
Strap

The watch's look is completed by a textured rubber strap with embossing, equipped with a folding titanium clasp. This modern solution harmonizes with the ultra-modern style of the Monaco Evergraph. Although a traditional textile strap is also possible, rubber better emphasizes the model's concept and aesthetics.
Final Evaluation of TAG Heuer Monaco Evergraph

The Monaco Evergraph model was a surprise for me. A chronograph from TAG Heuer was expected, but the new button operation system overturned my expectations. This is not just an innovation, but a fundamentally new approach to chronograph operation, opening up prospects for further developments.
The watch is not intended for a wide audience, and that's okay. It's impossible to please everyone, but the significance of TAG Heuer's achievement cannot be denied. The Monaco Evergraph combines modernity in concept and execution, and, according to production rumors, similar systems will appear in other models of the brand.
