If you are a Daytona enthusiast like me but are tired of all the games with Rolex AD, and you simply want to purchase the best alternative, you've come across the right article. My selection here is not about “cheaper alternatives” but rather equivalent or better ones.
As most of us already know, the Rolex Daytona is essentially the most sought-after watch in the world. It has such an insatiable demand that even at quite high levels of production, Rolex is unable (or intentionally chooses not) to meet the end demand. This creates a power vacuum in the economy - too much demand for far too little supply, hence, the Daytona is almost impossible to purchase at retail prices from Rolex authorized dealers, and the grey market prices are nearly three times the actual retail price. In my opinion, and that of many other watch collectors and enthusiasts, the Daytona is grossly overpriced at grey market prices; the watch simply isn't worth three times the retail price. The most sensible thing in this situation is to broaden your horizons and look at some alternatives, and I think some of them are even better than the Daytona, and can be purchased at a similar or even lower price than the Daytona's retail price.
If you've mustered the courage and bought a Daytona at grey market prices, then you've opened your budget to the world of high watchmaking - why settle for Rolex's tool watches? If you want to keep your budget at the Daytona's retail price level, you can choose from a myriad of brands and models of luxury watches, and even at this price, you will also touch into the accessible range of high watchmaking. Let's look at these four fantastic alternatives that you might just fall in love with.
1. Girard Perregaux Laureato Chronograph
Number one on my list is a watch that I have personally seriously considered as an alternative to the Daytona. The longer I stay on the Rolex “wish list,” the more I like this watch. It is the Girard Perregaux Laureato Chronograph, an absolutely stunning work of art from a brand that was founded in 1791, much earlier than Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe. In fact, they even created some movements for Patek in the past.
The Laureato Chronograph model is magnificent, with a higher quality of finish than any Rolex model, with more details on the bracelet, case, dial, and also with manual finishing of the GP03300 caliber movement. These are luxury sports watches that sell at almost the same price as a new stainless steel Daytona, and most interestingly, they can be easily purchased at GP boutiques, and on the grey market, they sell at a discount.
The more I look at these watches, the more I start preferring them over the Daytona, as they have much more merit. They have a magnificent integrated bracelet with contrasting polished and matte H-links, an elegant case with short lugs, an ultra-thin case, angular screw-down chronograph buttons, protected crowns. I could talk endlessly about the qualities of the Laureato, especially when it comes to the dial design with the eye-catching “clous de Paris” pyramids and multiple dial color options. Even better, you can purchase the watch in 38 mm or 42 mm sizes, which allows meeting the needs of both small and large wrist owners.
My only dissatisfaction with these watches is the presence of a date window between 4 and 5 o'clock, it should just be removed to maintain the dial's purity. Although due to many other positive aspects, I can overlook this.
2. Omega Speedmaster
We have all heard of the Speedmaster, as well as the coveted and ultra-popular Moonwatch model. It's a great alternative to the Daytona, having many visual similarities and even some superiority. Build quality can be subjective: some enthusiasts say it's better than Rolex, while others disagree, claiming it's just one step below the king. Subjectivity aside, there is no denying that the Speedmaster Moonwatch is one of the most iconic watches on the market, it also happens to be a chronograph with some sporty display case back options showing off the beautifully intricate mechanism.
The Speedmaster Moonwatch's dial is very clean, easily readable, and the absence of a date wheel is a positive point. While most Speedmaster models are easily available for purchase, there are those that are quite hard to acquire, and their value has really increased. Hunting for these special models can be interesting as they offer very unique designs compared to the usual Daytona look or the regular Moonwatch.
3. Zenith El Primero
The Zenith El Primero watches have long been considered an alternative to the Rolex Daytona, and some see them as a full-fledged competitor. It's not just limited to their similar appearance, but actually rooted in its history, more specifically known as the race for the first-ever automatic chronograph movement, which Zenith is widely considered the first inventor of. Rolex then tested this movement and simplified it for actual use in some of the early Daytona models, which should tell you a lot about the El Primero model's effectiveness.
El Primero is a bit bolder in style, with some nice color touches on the sub-dials and an overall more artistic take on sports watches. There are quite a few options that can be purchased at a Zenith boutique.
4. Tudor Black Bay Chronograph.
Want a chronograph watch that looks very similar to the Daytona and from a brand related to Rolex? Check out the new Tudor Black Bay Chronograph model with a striking “panda” dial. These watches are the actual “panda dial” chronograph, unlike the Daytona, which uses rings for sub-dials. The Black Bay Chronograph went the extra mile and filled the sub-dials completely for that full retro panda look.
The Tudor Black Bay Chronograph is the most “tool-like” watch on our list. Despite great quality for its price category, it cannot match the quality of the other watches on our list, including the Rolex Daytona.

While the Daytona has incredible history and great watchmaking behind it, it has the main ingredient that others do not. It’s up to you to decide whether you will participate in this journey purely for the passion of watches or if you need to prove something to others - a thought I am personally still grappling with.
