While heritage has always been a cornerstone of Zenith's long-running El Primero chronograph series, in recent years the brand has doubled down on its commitment to the authenticity and historical accuracy of its vintage-inspired El Primero models. To date, this effort has brought Zenith significant success: a wide range of reissues of early El Primero models in exact sizes has been complemented by a combination of new modern color schemes and interpretations.
However, until now, the Chronomaster Revival sub-brand has primarily focused on the A384 and A385 models with a tonneau case, introduced in 1969, while the third major model in the El Primero family remained overlooked. The brand's latest release changes that, bringing the more traditional A386 case design into the permanent Chronomaster Revival collection with three stunning new examples. The new Zenith El Primero Chronomaster Original series is perhaps the most compelling addition to the collection to date, showcasing the most iconic El Primero design in an exact 38mm execution, alongside a pair of charismatic reimagined models boasting the brand's modern movement craftsmanship.

All three models in the new Zenith El Primero Chronomaster Original line share the same 38mm case design. This is an impressively accurate reproduction of the original A386 design introduced in 1969, with the same deceptively simple shape. The lugs are a real highlight, wide, gradually tapering with wedge-shaped pointed tips that help highlight the clarity of the form in images.
Despite the apparent simplicity, these lugs are a showcase of Zenith's intensive and thorough finishing: radial brushing along the tops of the lugs is complemented by a smooth outer bevel and matching mirror-polished case sides. In larger examples of this case, the sharp and dramatic undercut of the lug tips helps visually compress the design to smaller-than-expected proportions, but with an already compact 38mm diameter, this might make the watch appear too small on some wrists.
The rest of the case is also executed in classic 1969 style, with a thin polished bezel and pump pushers. Apart from the modern finishing, the only significant difference in the new models is the sapphire display caseback. In two of the three variants, this classic form is rendered in stainless steel, while the third is in 18k rose gold, adding luxurious masculine warmth.

While the three models in the Zenith El Primero Chronomaster Original series have two strikingly different dial colors, the core design is nearly identical to the 1969 A386 model. The biggest difference lies in the functionality of the chronograph itself. Thanks to a unique central chronograph seconds hand that makes a full sweep of the dial once every 10 seconds, the sub-dials and outer scales are adapted accordingly.
The original model's tachymeter outer ring is transformed into a 1/10th-second scale for more precise chronograph readings, while the contrasting inner ring shifts from a decimal hours scale to a decimal scale for chronograph work. The characteristic overlapping triple sub-dials from the El Primero A386 are also adapted to this unconventional layout: a standard running seconds sub-dial at the 9 o'clock position, a 60-minute chronograph sub-dial at 6 o'clock, and a 60-second chronograph sub-dial at 3 o'clock.
For the rose gold model and one of the stainless steel variants, these changes compared to the original formula are nearly exhausted: the new Chronomaster Original carries on the legacy with a silver main dial, faceted applied indices, snail-patterned sub-dials in light gray, dark gray, and navy blue, and a vibrant red central chronograph hand. In the second stainless steel model, Zenith significantly alters the appearance, offering a monochrome "reverse panda" scheme.
In this new look, the trio of silver sub-dials is complemented by a matte black main dial surface, a reverse black-silver color for the outer ring scales, and khaki Super-LumiNova on the indices and inner segments of the white ladder hands. While this variant might be more versatile for the A386 design, in images, it loses some of the El Primero line's unique charisma and consequently appears more generic.

For all three models in the El Primero Chronomaster Original line, Zenith employs the recently introduced in-house automatic chronograph movement El Primero 3600. In addition to the aforementioned central chronograph hand and unique layout, this fully modernized descendant of the original El Primero movement is equipped with a lateral clutch, a column wheel, and a robust 60-hour power reserve at the brand's signature 36,000 vibrations per hour.

The Zenith El Primero Chronomaster Original series is distinguished by a variety of strap options. All three models can be equipped with calf leather straps in unique colors: dark blue for the stainless steel model with a silver dial, saddle for the model with a black dial, and rich tobacco brown for the rose gold model. For the stainless steel models, buyers can also choose a three-link "oyster" bracelet in stainless steel with polished center links.
The latter option, however, noticeably deviates from the original A386 appearance. Like its A384 and A385 siblings, early A386 El Primero models were linked with the legendary Gay Frères ladder bracelet and its distinctive look. While the new three-link bracelet is attractive enough in images, a ladder bracelet would likely allow the Chronomaster Original to stand out more boldly on the wrist.

By expanding the Chronomaster Revival collection to include the most enduring El Primero design and introducing the new El Primero 3600 movement in the brand's more vintage-oriented chronograph line, the new Zenith El Primero Chronomaster Original series represents a bold and charismatic step forward in reimagining this historic line.
All three models of the Zenith El Primero Chronomaster Original series are available now from official dealers. The price for the stainless steel models starts at $8,400, while the 18k rose gold variant is priced at $19,100. For more information, visit the brand's website.
