Being punctual is easy on paper but a challenging trait in practice.
In a world where smartphones can do almost everything, wristwatches remain a trusted and reliable piece of EDC gear that helps organize time in your busy day. If you're a modern pioneer craving adventure, you'll need a watch as tough as nails to withstand an ordinary workday or a weekend in nature. One of the most durable watch lines is the G-SHOCK from Casio.
Known for their rugged design, G-SHOCK watches are perfect for adventurers, workers, military personnel, and athletes. These are some of the toughest watches on the planet, thanks to a robust 10-layer construction that protects the quartz movement. G-SHOCK is always the right choice when seeking an effective chronometer suitable for an apocalypse, but the number of models is overwhelming. After analyzing 40 years of production, we've compiled a list of the best G-SHOCK watches today.
Best G-SHOCK Watches
A Brief History of G-SHOCK
The idea for the G-SHOCK line was born in 1981 when Casio engineer Kikuo Ibe accidentally dropped his pocket watch inherited from his father. The trio, dubbed the "Tough Team," was chosen to create a watch capable of withstanding daily knocks and drops. Ibe discovered that the center of a rubber ball remains unaffected when it bounces and applied this idea to the first G-SHOCK watch. He also wanted the watch to be water-resistant to 100 meters, withstand drops from up to 10 feet, and have a ten-year battery life. In April 1983, the G-SHOCK DW-5000C was introduced, and a news channel tested the watch live on air, even hitting it with a hockey stick like a puck. The G-SHOCK watch survived, and the world was introduced to this legendary line.
G-SHOCK Terms to Know
When diving into the world of this legendary Japanese watch company, it might be challenging to learn about all the varieties and series that come out, sometimes combined into one release. Here are some key terms to know:
- Frogman: Known for its asymmetrical shape, the Frogman series is designed for divers and swimmers and meets the ISO 6425 standard. Frogman watches are popular in the 1000 series, as well as the 8200 and 6300 lines.
- Mudmaster: The Mudmaster is an adventure-oriented G-SHOCK watch known for its extreme durability and resistance to the elements and mud. The analog-digital Mudmaster is noticeably different from the digital Mudman watches.
- Rangeman: The first G-SHOCK watch to feature Triple Sensor technology (compass, altimeter/barometer, thermometer), now rare and no longer guaranteed to include GPS.
- CasiOak: Debuted in 2019, the 2100 series featured a "mature" design, octagonal bezel, and analog-digital display. Fans call these models CasiOak for their eight-sided resemblance to the luxury Royal Oak watches from Audemars Piguet.
- MOVE: In 2020, G-SHOCK introduced the MOVE series, designed to follow the growing trend of smartwatches while staying within the brand's ethos. These models come with heart rate monitoring, GPS, step tracking, and a suite of sports apps.
- Full Metal: Last year, the brand began releasing its most popular models, such as the 2100 and 5600, in Full Metal style. While G-SHOCK watches previously featured metal cases and bezels, they largely used resin materials. In Full Metal watches, metal is used entirely.
- Master of G: Master of G is a series of releases from G-SHOCK designed to present new and innovative features. Past Master of G models have featured technologies such as moon phase, Tough Solar charging, GPS navigation, and pulse sensors.
- MR-G: MR-G includes elite G-SHOCK models. These watches often use premium materials like titanium, advanced technologies, and innovative concepts.

G-Shock GM2100CB-3A Utility Series

G-SHOCK added a NATO strap to its mature CasiOak model for this Utility series, urging users to take watches outdoors.
Despite its affordable price and utmost durability, the 2100 series watches, also known as “CasiOak,” have never been synonymous with outdoor recreation as such. If you have such a watch, you are likely using it as your everyday watch, while more robust G-SHOCK models like the 5600 or 800 are left for activities like hiking or climbing.
However, this year the brand released a Utility series for CasiOaks, where a NATO fabric strap is used instead of a rubber or steel strap. We like this unique touch added to the lineup, reminding fans that, like adventure-oriented models, the 2100 can be taken anywhere.
- Dimensions: 49.3 × 44.4 × 11.8 mm.
- Best for: Hiking, climbing
G-SHOCK MOVE DWH5600-1

The MOVE smartwatch by G-SHOCK added a fitness tracker and four sports modes to its retro digital watch from 1983.
Released earlier this year, the DWH5600-1 watch, part of the MOVE series, is not the first fitness tracker from G-SHOCK. However, these watches attract attention with their uniqueness and low price. Nostalgia and simplicity are on their side, as the watches are based on the first G-SHOCK digital watch from 1983, and while not as technologically advanced as other competing smartwatches on the market, they can do quite a lot for $300.
These watches are slightly larger than the standard 5600 watches and are equipped with an optical heart rate sensor, an accelerometer for counting and tracking steps, smartphone connectivity for accurate readings and notifications, and GPS for use in four sports modes: running, walking, gym training, and interval training.
- Dimensions: 51.1 × 44.5 × 17.4 mm.
- Best for: Fitness, running, swimming, everyday life
G-SHOCK GW5000U-1

This highly accurate reissue of the first-ever G-SHOCK watch comes with some nice material and feature updates.
Inspired by the DW5000C model, which became the first G-SHOCK model, this modern version of the classic watch is a precise reissue with some modern updates for the brand's 40th anniversary. Instead of a resin back, a screw-down stainless steel back protects the steel core, providing greater strength and reliability.
The GW5000U-1 model also increases water resistance to 200 meters and features a massive stainless steel case. Of course, these watches also use the Multi-Band 6 system, providing more accuracy thanks to radio-controlled time settings on six global frequencies. Almost indistinguishable from the original, these watches are a great way to celebrate the history of the iconic brand.

This line first appeared in 1994 and became the starting point for young watch enthusiasts looking for fashionable yet utilitarian wristwear. Recently, G-SHOCK introduced the G-B001M series, which repeats the original but with some updates, including smartphone compatibility and a swappable case design. The revamped bezel allows for a unique style choice and a complete change of color or material (available in urethane or metal), as well as easy strap swaps.

Paired with a companion smartphone app, the H2000 provides real-time results for these sports, as well as additional running information such as stride and pace. G-SHOCK Full Metal GMB2100D-1A

These Full Metal CasiOak are the most high-end watches of the 2100 series, becoming a true jewel of your adventure wardrobe.
Released in 2019 and using the octagonal shape of the classic DW-5000C model, the 2100 series has become the de facto "king" of the G-SHOCK line thanks to its elegant and straightforward design, as well as its resemblance to the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak - hence the unofficial nickname "CasiOak" among fans. In 2021, the brand gave the CasiOak model (previously offered in resin/steel combination) a Full Metal style, adding a fully stainless steel case and bracelet to the lineup to elevate it even further.
The watch features a thin case with a diameter of 12.8 mm, one of the thinnest G-SHOCK cases to date, a solar quartz movement, and analog-digital time indication. Reliable shock-resistant watches are equipped with a dual Super Illuminator LED and have water resistance up to 200 meters - in case you dive into the ocean or get caught in a downpour.

G-SHOCK Frogman GW8230NT-4

G-SHOCK celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Frogman model with a revived favorite from 2000 featuring a titanium case and some design differences.
In 2023, G-SHOCK celebrated 40 years since the brand's founding and 30 years of the legendary Frogman watches. When the watches debuted in 1993, they became the first diver's watches certified to ISO 6425 standard, with a diving depth of 200 m (compared to 100 m for previous models). However, it was the second-generation models that appeared a few years later that gave us the unusual asymmetrical design and reinforced rugged construction. In 2000, we received the bright red DW-8200NT model, which was recreated this year.
The commemorative engraving on the case back and the frog outline on the LED backlight are just a couple of examples, but these watches will be a reliable addition to your adventures with or without retro factors. The GW-8230NT-4 is the smallest Frogman in the current lineup - it features a titanium case, 200 m water resistance, and a bezel and strap made from bio-based resin. The watch can log the last ten dives and has tide charts and moon phase data.
- Dimensions: 52 × 50.3 × 18 mm.
- Best for: Diving, swimming, surfing, hiking
G-SHOCK Full Metal GMWB5000BPC1

In this Full Metal version, the 5000 series watches are enhanced with black steel and a color gradient effect around the dial.
If the GW5000U model was a celebration of the brand's past, the Full Metal GMWB5000BPC1 series shows how far the brand has come, even within the simple framework of the 5000 series. For the first time adding retro style to the Full Metal lineup, the black stainless steel watches have the same vintage square case design but change it on the dial with a color gradient effect that shifts from blue to green at certain angles.
The GMWB5000BPC1 watches boast 200 m water resistance, shock resistance, Bluetooth features, Super Illuminator, and G-SHOCK's Tough Solar charging, making them some of the most aesthetically pleasing G-SHOCK watches.

These 2000 series watches have a titanium case for lightness and increased strength. The analog watch, equipped with a world timer and chronograph, features a shock-resistant all-metal construction and a Dura Soft Fluoro rubber strap that helps them withstand adventures wherever you are.
Extremely durable watches also feature a Bluetooth GPS solar-powered radio-controlled chronometer, ensuring great accuracy.

This year, the MRGBF1000R1A model, which has only been presented three times in the top MR-G lineup, combined elements of its predecessors to become the most luxurious Frogman model to date. Titanium case and bezel (the first for analog Frogman), a digital-analog display, and a blue-coated sapphire crystal case back with dual-side laser engraving further emphasize the beauty of the new sports watches.
Blue details extend to other parts of the watch, including the outer second hand track and sub-dials. The watch also works in tandem with a smartphone via Bluetooth for dive logging and interval tracking.
