Key Takeaways

  • Orient Star launches new Contemporary Date models for its 75th anniversary.
  • The limited Aurora edition features a striking blue-green gradient dial.
  • Contemporary Date models balance quality, design, and affordability.

Orient Star presents three new Contemporary Date models - watches with a minimalist and easily readable design.

The main novelty is the anniversary version with the gradient dial "Aurora" in blue-green shades, adding brightness to the collection. This model is limited to 1200 pieces. In addition, two models from the main collection with subdued purple and brown dials, inspired by the 70s style, are presented.

Concept and Positioning of Contemporary Date

Contemporary Date occupies the entry-level position in the Orient Star lineup. The watches combine practicality for everyday use and comfort when worn. They reflect the classic DNA of the Japanese brand - central hands, a date at the "3 o'clock" mark, and a power reserve indicator at "12 o'clock". Unlike more expensive models, there are no avant-garde details here, making the design more restrained and accessible.

Orient Star Contemporary Date collection overview

The latest update is timed to the 75th anniversary of Orient Star - the anniversary version Aurora is released in a limited series of 1200 pieces. In addition to it, two standard models with textured dials and a simplified power reserve indicator layout are presented. The stainless steel case with a diameter of 38.5 mm has compact proportions, ensuring comfort on the wrist. The Aurora and purple dial models are equipped with a 316L steel bracelet, while the brown version comes with a crocodile-embossed leather strap.

Orient Star Contemporary Date 75th Anniversary: Features of the Anniversary Model

Since the announcement of the anniversary series for the brand's 75th anniversary, I have carefully examined each new release. In February, five models were presented, and I decided to review them separately to give each one proper attention.

However, it is the Contemporary Date that garnered the most interest from readers, many of whom were looking for more affordable commemorative watches. If the M34 models are "space" watches, the M42 are divers, and the M45 are classic, then the Contemporary Date can be called a universal model for everyday wear. The limited edition with the blue-green Aurora dial stands out with its bright color scheme.

The colors of the dial appear lively and harmonious thanks to the smooth gradient. The outer track is executed in dark blue with clear white minute markers. Every five minutes is marked with round luminescent dots. Inside is a lighter blue ring element with concentric engravings. Compared to previous versions, the thickness of this ring has been reduced, visually simplifying and lightening the design. The main surface of the dial has a sandblasted texture with a transparent coating and a pleasant blue-green hue.

Aurora model with power reserve indicator

An important update is the power reserve indicator - it is now executed as a linear scale printed on the dial. Previously, a convex steel element with a curved shape, reminiscent of a sickle, emphasized the maximum power reserve of 50 hours. The other design elements remain unchanged: the date window frame, sharp luminescent dauphine-style hands, and trapezoidal hour markers with Roman numerals at the "6" and "12 o'clock" positions.

Models from the Main Collection Orient Star Contemporary Date

The anniversary Aurora received special attention, but the standard models are built on the same platform. The angular lugs of the case demonstrate high-quality finishing for watches in this price range. The matte surfaces contrast with polished edges, emphasizing geometric shapes. The polished bezel frames the sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating.

Orient Star models with purple and brown dials

The purple and brown dials look more restrained compared to the Aurora. The texture is present, but the transitions of shades are softer and less noticeable. The layout remains identical, including the reduced inner ring. Both models appear less bright but maintain an interesting design.

Purple model with steel bracelet

The purple version is equipped with a steel bracelet with 20-millimeter links, which slightly tapers to a clasp with a button mechanism. The brown model comes with a calfskin strap with crocodile embossing, emphasizing the warm tone of the dial and giving a classic look.

Final Conclusions

It's a pity that Orient Star has temporarily left the American market. The brand is gaining momentum in Europe and other regions, and a return to the USA would be a logical step, but strong marketing support and visibility are necessary for success.

As for the watches themselves, the Contemporary Date meets expectations in key aspects. The Aurora version is my favorite due to its expressive design. While the M34 models with meteorite dials and the M42 diving watches are impressive technically, the Contemporary Date wins with its versatility and suitability for any situation. At its price, these watches offer an excellent combination of quality and functionality, making them an attractive entry into the world of Orient Star.
