Solar watches are not a novelty in the market.

We have always appreciated such models so much that we recently even collaborated with TAG Heuer to create our own. Therefore, when a new player enters the market - Alpina with the Alpiner Extreme Solarmetre model, we were interested in examining it in detail. Although solar watches can come in different shapes and sizes, we especially like models for outdoor activities that make the most of being in the open air. Alpina has done just that by taking their most robust design and integrating a solar mechanism into it. This is clearly a well-thought-out project, so let's examine all the details of this adventure watch.

Dial

The dial of the Alpiner Extreme Solarmetre is a key element that reveals the essence of the watch. In solar watches, it is the dial that allows light to reach the solar elements, powering the mechanism. Early models of solar watches looked like miniature solar panels on the wrist - with a black glossy surface, which severely limited design options. Alpina managed to create a dial that closely resembles the traditional design of the Alpiner Extreme while allowing enough light to power the watch.

Alpina Alpiner Extreme Solarmetre dial with triangular pattern

The design retains the signature triangular pattern characteristic of the entire Alpiner Extreme series. In this model, it is presented in five colors: burgundy, light green, light blue, dark blue, and white. Sports watches with a recognizable dial texture are a common trend in the industry, and Alpina fully follows it. A wide range of colors is an important advantage, allowing you to choose a model according to personal preferences without a long wait.

The rest of the dial is made to be as functional as possible: applied hour markers with luminescent coating, including a triangle at the "12" mark. The date window is located at "3", and the text on the dial is minimal, not distracting from the main elements.

Case

Alpina Alpiner Extreme Solarmetre stainless steel case

Here, the strength and reliability mentioned at the beginning manifest. The case is made of matte stainless steel in a three-component construction, providing water resistance up to 100 meters. The round bezel is attached to the middle part of the case with screws, whose heads are designed as triangles - repeating the dial motif.

Although such a case shape often seems bulky and reminiscent of large diver watches, in this case, the dimensions are small: diameter - 37.5 mm, thickness - 10.19 mm. This is an average size suitable for most wrists.

Every element of the case emphasizes its strength: the side bumper, massive protective protrusions on the sides of the knurled crown. The flat wide lugs of the case smoothly drop down, ensuring a snug fit of the strap or bracelet to the wrist. The case back is solid, with clearly embossed technical data.

Movement

Alpina AL-140 solar movement details

The main innovation for Alpina is the brand's first solar movement, which they approached without compromise. The main parameters important for solar watches are the charging time and the duration of autonomous operation when fully charged. The AL-140 caliber demonstrates excellent characteristics.

The watch can remain in complete darkness for up to 10 months when fully charged while maintaining functionality. After stopping, just 10 seconds under light is enough for the mechanism to start again, and one minute of illumination will ensure operation for the whole day. Charging is possible from both natural and artificial light, making the watch reliable in any conditions, except perhaps for prolonged stays in a mine.

Strap

The choice of strap depends on the dial color. The burgundy and light green options come with a three-link metal bracelet, while the light blue, dark blue, and white come with rubber straps matching the dial color. Personally, I prefer the rubber strap option - it underscores the utilitarian nature of the watch and matches its adventurous spirit.

Adventure watches should be reliable and durable so you don't have to worry about scratches or battery drain at the wrong moment. The Alpiner Extreme Solarmetre is an excellent example of such a watch. They leave no doubt about their strength, accuracy, and reliability, becoming the perfect companion for outdoor activities. All that's left is to choose the dial color.
