Superleggera translates from Italian as "super light".
For car enthusiasts, this term holds a deeper meaning. It refers to a unique car body manufacturing technology developed by Felice Bianchi Anderloni at the Italian coachbuilder Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera. Patented in 1936, the Superleggera system uses a frame of thin steel tubes following the contours of the body, covered with lightweight aluminum panels that also provide additional structural rigidity.
This technology is distinguished by its high flexibility in both design and production, allowing for the creation of unique and innovative body shapes. The term Superleggera is also used by the Chanel brand. In 2005, the J12 Chronograph Superleggera model was released, made of ceramic and aluminum. Five years ago, the Monsieur. Superleggera Edition was introduced, and this year the new Chanel J12 Superleggera Caliber 12.1 in black ceramic has been presented.
History and Evolution of Chanel J12 Superleggera
The first J12 model with the "Superleggera" prefix appeared three years after the debut of the first J12 chronographs. The 2002 chronographs were aimed at men, as this complication is the most popular among men's watches. The 2005 model with a 41mm case diameter - the J12 Chronograph Superleggera - became the most extreme version of the original unisex J12 model, created by Jacques Helleu in 2000. Superleggera transformed the J12, adding a design inspired by the Speedmaster and Daytona watches.
The result was a bolder, performance-oriented, and lightweight interpretation of the J12 aesthetic. This model was ahead of its time. The combination of aluminum and ceramic perfectly fit into the automotive theme, yet the appearance, tactile sensations, and sound - the aluminum bracelet emitted a unique muted sound - proved too unusual for both Chanel's traditional audience and watch enthusiasts. How will the Chanel J12 Superleggera Caliber 12.1 (H11059) of 2026 perform?
Features and Specifications of Chanel J12 Superleggera
The first version of the J12 named Superleggera was an early testament to Chanel's growing ambitions in technical watchmaking. The two-tone design of aluminum and ceramic was undoubtedly original, and the use of a COSC-certified movement based on the ETA 2894 underscored the brand's serious intentions. Chanel acquired a 20% stake in movement manufacturer Kenissi and a 25% stake in luxury watch brand Romain Gauthier, signaling a long-term development strategy. The Monsieur. Superleggera Edition is equipped with its own movement, developed in collaboration with Romain Gauthier, while the latest generations of the J12 use the proprietary Kenissi automatic caliber.

Upon examining the new 42mm J12 Superleggera with an automatic Caliber 12.1, COSC-certified, Arnaud Chastaing, director of Chanel's watch design studio, notes that the new model retains the spirit of the 2005 original: "The new Superleggera is not a chronograph and aluminum is not used, but it is definitely a true Superleggera thanks to a number of aesthetic similarities. The previous model was the starting point for the 2026 version. Incidentally, the design process was not easy, because overall, I feel more comfortable in a women's theme than in a purely men's and sports one."
Case Materials and Design: Ceramic and Steel Instead of Aluminum

The Modern Generation J12 - Result of the Redesign Conducted by Chastaing in 2019:
"The original design was striking. I remember its launch well. The campaign around it was magical. It was a revolution, and revolutions don't repeat, so my motto when updating the J12 was: 'change everything without changing anything'. Therefore, 80% of the current generation J12 are new parts that are not immediately obvious. I worked like a surgeon. The introduction of the series of matte blue J12 models was a more noticeable evolutionary step in this regard."
The new J12 Superleggera continues the slow evolution that began seven years ago. The watch once again displays the Italian name in elegant red letters on the front and a two-tone design. This time the case is made of matte black ceramic, with a two-tone bezel made of black steel with circular brushing and an insert of natural hardened steel. The ceramic bracelet's central links have a deep vertical texture and highly polished edges. The contrasting elements are more restrained than in the 2005 model but still based on it. Through the transparent case back, you can see the Caliber 12.1 with a black rotor adorned with a circle - Chastaing's signature design element.

Ergonomics and Wearing Impressions of Chanel J12 Superleggera Caliber 12.1
With a diameter of 42mm and a thickness of 12.5mm, the Chanel J12 Superleggera cannot be called a compact watch. They also do not stand out for being particularly light, as the light but fragile aluminum has been replaced with more durable steel elements.

The combination of materials creates a subtle two-tone effect, and the watch feels soft and comfortable thanks to the shape and finish of the elements. Although the spring clasp of the bracelet is not to everyone's liking, its operation and appearance leave a positive impression.

When worn on the wrist, attention is drawn to the complex black lacquered dial with a satin-finished central part and a guilloche hour track. The first thing that catches the eye is the asymmetric date window at the "4 o'clock" position, pointed to by a red hand.

The design resembles a car dashboard. The red zone with markings from 8 to 12 o'clock mimics the red zone of a tachometer. Perhaps this element may seem overly decorative, but it does not appear excessively loud.

The practicality of the model is emphasized by water resistance up to 200 meters, a screw-down crown, and the precise chronometric automatic Caliber 12.1 with a 70-hour power reserve, visible through the sapphire case back. The movement operates at a frequency of 4 Hz.

Final Conclusions on Chanel J12 Superleggera Caliber 12.1
Is the 2026 Superleggera the best model in the series? No, that honor rightly belongs to the Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B "Berlinetta", released in the late 1930s. Rephrasing the question: is the new Superleggera the best watch with this name? The answer is complex. The first model - a chronograph made of aluminum and ceramic - was imperfect but had the spirit and atmosphere of a vintage racing car. It needed to be worn carefully but fulfilled its purpose.

The Monsieur. Superleggera Edition is a very interesting creation with a jumping hour and retrograde minute display, but the cost of over 30,000 euros makes it inaccessible for most. The new version is about three times cheaper - around €12,900 / $13,750 / £11,000, which is still not a budget choice. My favorite Superleggera remains the original model H1624, although it is not my favorite J12 watch overall. That position is occupied by the J12 Marine, which I previously called my "little secret".
