The concept of Free Willie by IFLW is inspired by the 1928 cartoon Steamboat Willie, which enters the public domain on January 1, 2024. In honor of this significant event, IFLW created a limited series of 150 pieces that will appeal to fans of Mickey Mouse and animation in general. The base for these special watches is the Citizen Tsuyosa Automatic NJ0151-53M model. For those unfamiliar with the numbers, this is the light-blue “Tiffany” version of the Tsuyosa Automatic.
For this special dial, the creative minds at IFLW placed the old-school Mickey in a new situation. The blue dial color serves as a background reminiscent of the sky, creating a beautiful color block recognizable from afar. But if you zoom in a bit, you can see that the IFLW artists allowed themselves to place Mickey Mouse on the Moon. The “Lunar Willie” concept was created to symbolize that Steamboat Willie can travel freely without the constraints of time and copyright. Thus, the image of Mickey Mouse planting a flag of freedom on the Moon represents new opportunities and celebrates his joyful spirit.
Each Hand-Painted Dial is Unique
The fun idea of placing Mickey from “Steamboat Willie” in another situation makes a step away from the original plot. The action of “Steamboat Willie” takes place on a paddle steamer. It's a funny short story with Captain Pete, a parrot, and Minnie Mouse as other characters. It was amusing to see the alleged debut of Mickey and Minnie again, as it lasts just over seven minutes. But Mickey Mouse fans know that this was not the first cartoon created featuring Mickey and Minnie. In fact, it was the third but the first widely distributed.
When I saw the new dial, I immediately rewatched the short animated story, which I hadn't seen in ages. Overall, it was a great reminder of the old Mickey Mouse style that I adore, and it's very pleasant to see this old-school cartoon style on the dials of these watches. As we know from IFLW, the dials are hand-painted. The creative people from the team remove the ordinary dials and apply thin layers of paint to create a special image. Since all 150 dials are created by hand, each one is unique.

The Citizen Tsuyosa Automatic NJ0151-53M watch features a 40mm stainless steel case with a thickness of 11.7mm and a lug-to-lug measurement of 49mm. Additionally, the watch has an integrated stainless steel bracelet, which is very comfortable and enjoyable to wear. I reviewed the NJ150 in 2022 and loved every second spent with this watch. Therefore, I think it's wonderful that IFLW chose the similar NJ0151 for their creative endeavors.
Inside the watch is the Citizen caliber 8210. This automatic movement operates at a frequency of 21,600 per hour and provides a 40-hour power reserve. According to Citizen, the average accuracy is approximately ±20 seconds per day. But while these details are nice, I don't think people will buy these watches specifically for them. If you appreciate the work of IFLW or are a big Mickey Mouse fan, these watches for €890 might be your choice.
