Panerai Submersible Navy SEALs watch

One of Panerai's latest developments in materials is the world's first watch case made from hafnium. This metal is featured in a new model released as part of the Submersible collection.

Hafnium is among the rarest industrial metals on Earth. Global production of this metal amounts to only a few dozen tons per year. Hafnium exists exclusively in zirconium ores, from which it is very difficult to extract. It is usually used in control rods of nuclear reactors and aerospace components.

Hafnium withstands extreme temperatures and has exceptional corrosion resistance, comparable to titanium. In terms of hardness, it is comparable to stainless steel but weighs about 70% more. Consequently, the watch itself weighs a substantial 200 grams. In the new model, hafnium is part of a new alloy called Afniotech, which comprises 95% of the case.

The case dimensions are substantial - 47 x 18.5 mm. The case features a gray dial with a date window and a second counter styled like a crosshair. For excellent readability, the hands and hour markers are treated with Super-LumiNova X2 luminescent compound. The minute hand glows blue in the dark, while the other elements glow green. Additional functionality is provided by a 12-hour GMT hand with a yellow tip. The case is water-resistant to 1000 meters.

The case has been sandblasted. It stands out from steel and titanium with its silvery-blue hue. This is beautifully emphasized by the grained dial texture with a gradient that ranges from black at the edges to light gray in the center. Under the dial is the automatic caliber P.9010/GMT, which provides a 72-hour power reserve thanks to its two barrels.

The back of the mechanism is covered by a screw-down titanium case back, engraved with the Navy SEALs logo. The engraving subtly indicates that with the purchase of this watch, the owner will receive a unique experience - 3 days of intensive training under the guidance of U.S. Navy SEALs.

The model's release is scheduled for July 2026, and in March, the owners will head to Florida, where they can step into the shoes of the Navy SEALs. The new model comes on a 26-mm rubber strap that tapers to 22 mm near the titanium clasp. Included with the watch is a gray canvas strap for everyday use.

The release is limited to a series of 35 pieces. The estimated cost of the model is €90,000 or $99,500.
