Summer has arrived, and many Europeans are beginning to explore their local regions.
Perhaps that's why Seiko was inspired by the beauty of Lake Hallstättersee in Austria when creating its new limited edition model, available exclusively for the European market. The new Prospex HBC010 with its deep green dial reflects the calm water and surrounding nature of Lake Hallstättersee, complemented by a sunray effect that mimics the shimmering waves on the surface. The watch comes with a newly updated stainless steel bracelet and a silicone strap, with production limited to 1,400 pieces.
Inspiration and History: Lake Hallstättersee and Seiko Prospex
I have visited Austria several times for ski resorts, but I have yet to visit Lake Hallstättersee. This is a missed opportunity, as the lake, located an hour southeast of Salzburg, looks stunning both in summer and winter. However, today we should focus on the watch, which promises to be an interesting continuation of the classic Seiko SPB143 model, which I really liked.
New for 2024: Seiko Prospex 1965 Heritage Diver’s Watch HBC010
When the Seiko Prospex SPB143 model was released, I immediately purchased it and wore it with pleasure for a long time. Eventually, I sold it, as it seemed too bulky for my wrist. Fortunately, in 2024, Seiko introduced more elegant and refined models: Prospex SPB451, SPB453, and SPB455. The new HBC010, available only in Europe, is crafted in the same updated 40 mm "skin-diver" case. The case thickness is 13 mm, and the lug-to-lug length is 46.4 mm, providing a more comfortable fit compared to its bulkier predecessor.
The case finish features circular brushing on top, horizontal brushing on the sides, and sharply polished bevels around the perimeter. As in the old model, Seiko's ultra-hard coating is used, effectively protecting against scratches.
Features of the Bracelet and Strap of Seiko HBC010
The HBC010 comes with a familiar three-row bracelet, equipped with an updated folding clasp with a wetsuit extension and tool-free length adjustment, first seen in the HBC005 anniversary model for Seiko's 145th anniversary. The case lugs still have convenient holes for quick bracelet changes to the included silicone strap.
Movement and Water Resistance: Caliber 6R55 and 300 Meters
Like most modern Prospex models, the HBC010 is equipped with Seiko's own automatic caliber 6R55. The balance frequency is 21,600 vibrations per hour, with 24 jewels and a power reserve of up to 72 hours. The movement is hidden under a screw-down case back with an individual number, and the crown is also screw-down, providing water resistance up to 300 meters. This is more than sufficient for Lake Hallstättersee, whose maximum depth does not exceed 125 meters.
Dial and Bezel Design in the Shades of Lake Hallstättersee
The color scheme of the Seiko HBC010 is inspired by the greenery and nature of Lake Hallstättersee. The sunburst green dial is adorned with gold applied indices, hands, and inscriptions. Although, unlike the SPB143, the bezel is made of aluminum instead of brushed stainless steel, it is painted in the same shade of green as the dial, with markings in a gold color that harmonizes with the details. The indices, hands, and luminescent dot on the bezel are filled with Seiko's proprietary LumiBrite compound, ensuring good readability in the dark.
The date window has been shifted from the "3 o'clock" position to "4:30." This move can be called a compromise: the date window has become less noticeable while retaining its functionality for those who appreciate this feature.
Seiko's designers seem to have carefully studied photographs of Lake Hallstättersee in the summer. The combination of the green dial and bezel, gold details, and slightly yellowish LumiBrite glow indeed resembles postcards from this picturesque place. Additionally, the watch is suitable for diving in the lake, which is known for its clear alpine water, marked entry points, and unique underwater attractions: sunken trees, a shipwreck, and an underwater altar for wedding ceremonies. However, a thick wetsuit will be required for comfortable diving, as the water remains cold year-round.
Impressions of Wearing the Seiko HBC010
It is pleasant to try on the new Seiko Prospex HBC010. The model reminds me of my beloved SPB143, but at the same time, it showcases the advantages of the updated case. The case back fits comfortably on the wrist, the mid-case is thin, and the watch feels both reliable and elegant. Although the bracelet still feels a bit bulky, it is sturdy, and the updated clasp is a significant improvement. Fortunately, the lug width is 20 mm, making it easy to replace the bracelet with a lighter option. The kit already includes a black silicone strap, which is a good alternative.
The green-gold color scheme not only conveys the atmosphere of Austrian landscapes well but also looks attractive on its own. The absence of complex patterns and logos on the dial maintains the neutrality of the design, while the sunburst dial finish adds grace to the model. In low light, the dark green color can appear almost black.
Limited European Edition of 1,400 Pieces
The new Seiko Prospex Diver HBC010 is released in a limited edition of only 1,400 pieces, which is a relatively small run for the Seiko brand. The recommended retail price is 1,650 euros. The package includes a stainless steel bracelet and a black silicone strap.
