The launch took place at the legendary Hard Rock Guitar Hotel in Miami during one of the largest and most luxurious parties in the automotive world. The rally featured everything from several Bugatti Chirons, massive Ford Raptor SUVs, classic Shelby Cobra roadsters, to a striking 1972 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 and many more.
All cars were adorned with unique, eye-catching racing liveries, with the standout being a Canadian Porsche 911 styled as a beaver with a jug of maple syrup. Behind the wheels were prominent CEOs, world-famous DJs, and even a former heavyweight boxing champion - all eager to celebrate life and automotive passion on one of the world's brightest stages. This event is the perfect platform for the Ulysse Nardin brand. For the second time, the Swiss brand has partnered with this vibrant and extravagant car event, creating a unique version of its Freak X series, with the new model being even more dynamic than the first. The limited edition Ulysse Nardin Freak X Gumball 3000 – Edition 2 not only captures the spirit of this colorful automotive celebration but also showcases some of the brand's most interesting materials and design solutions in recent times.
Case Design and Dimensions: A Blend of Lightness and Expressiveness
Although on paper the Ulysse Nardin Freak X Gumball 3000 – Edition 2 case measures a substantial 43mm wide and 13.92mm thick, in practice, the watch feels significantly more elegant. This is achieved through several factors: the titanium case base and fully matte black PVD coating give the piece lightness and restraint. The shape of the case's side facets also plays an important role - instead of a sharp undercut, they organically taper from the top bevel, creating a smoother and more streamlined silhouette that noticeably reduces the visual volume on the wrist. Add to this the gentle curve of the lugs, and the watch feels closer to 41mm rather than the stated 43mm (for comparison: the circumference of my wrist in the photo is 17.2 cm).
As for the case design, this is one of the less extravagant models in the Freak family: a narrow smooth bezel without additional functions and a traditional crown with engraving at the '3 o'clock' position for setting and winding the mechanism. This approach makes the watch more versatile compared to the more avant-garde Freak models with a bezel that controls functions. Nevertheless, the design retains a modern and stylish look with a number of characteristic elements between the lugs. The limited edition plate on the side of the case at the '9 o'clock' position nicely echoes the orange accents in the dial design. Despite the unusual design, the water resistance level of 50 meters seems expected, although a more sporty character of the model would be better emphasized by a 100-meter water resistance.
Dial: Dynamic and Brightness at the Center of Attention
The dial of the Ulysse Nardin Freak X Gumball 3000 – Edition 2 is a true visual centerpiece. In the tradition of the Freak, there is plenty of kinetic mechanical spectacle here, but it is the surface of the dial that draws the eye. To incorporate the signature signal orange color of Gumball 3000, Ulysse Nardin used a forged carbon fiber base impregnated with a bright, almost fluorescent orange resin. This results in a random, organic pattern of gray, black, and bright orange stripes, which at certain viewing angles appears alive and even volcanic. The unique construction of the rotating disk of the Freak X watch ensures constant change in the orientation of this pattern throughout the day.
As with the other models in the Freak X series, the main dynamic of the dial is provided by the combination of the minute hand and the 'flying carousel'. This broad, futuristically skeletonized construction fully showcases the rotating and richly weighted balance wheel, as well as other escapement elements. This elegant and constantly pulsating structure makes a full revolution around the dial every hour. In combination with the slowly rotating colored hour disk, the dial creates a sense of constant motion and transformation, which perfectly matches the avant-garde style and racing theme of Gumball 3000.
Movement: Innovations and Reliability in Every Element
Inside the Ulysse Nardin Freak X Gumball 3000 – Edition 2 is the brand's proprietary automatic caliber UN-230 with a flying carousel, developed and produced in-house. Unlike the dynamic and multi-layered spectacle visible from the front, the reverse side of the watch presents a more restrained design: a three-quarter plate with radial brushing and black coating occupies most of the space. The skeletonized rotor and matte-finished bridges support a contemporary minimalist look. However, the technical aspect of the movement surpasses the aesthetic - the complex minute indication via the flying carousel and the open gear transmission of the hour disk make this movement unique. Meanwhile, the UN-230 provides decent technical specifications: 72 hours of power reserve at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour and a modern silicon escapement.
Strap: A Blend of Classic and Sporty Style
To complete the look, Ulysse Nardin equipped the Freak X Gumball 3000 – Edition 2 with a unique strap featuring a folding clasp made of rubber with a leather lining. Externally, the strap resembles a classic black leather variant with a buckle and contrasting stitching, but the inner layer of bright orange, matching the dial, gives the piece a sporty and dynamic look. Thanks to a series of thin diamond-shaped cutouts, the orange lining peeks through on the wrist, creating a cohesive and racing image that harmoniously fits into the overall theme of the model.
