Casio Citizen

Key Takeaways

  • Citizen Tsuyosa 37 offers better comfort and elegance.
  • Casio Edifice EFK-110 is praised for its build quality.
  • Both watches use similar Miyota movements.

Sunday evening is time for another episode of the “Watch Battle”. This is the last battle before the start of Watches and Wonders 2026 on Tuesday.

During this event, we will see many new watch models that will surely return to our Sunday comparison series. This week, we decided to have a rematch between two well-known models. After the update of the popular mechanical series Casio Edifice EKF-100, it's time to compare it with the Citizen Tsuyosa. But this time we narrowed down the scope: the new Casio Edifice EFK-110 has become slightly smaller, making it the perfect competitor for the Citizen Tsuyosa 37.

Interestingly, Casio and Citizen have almost identical movements — Miyota 8215 and 8210 respectively. This makes the confrontation more about design, comfort, and build quality rather than technical specifications. Both models are priced under 300 euros, let's give the floor to our editors: Dmitriy will defend the Casio Edifice EFK-110 — 279 euros, while Alexey will advocate for the Citizen Tsuyosa 37 — 299 euros. A very close contest! Let's find out who will win the battle of budget watches. Guys, your turn...

Citizen Tsuyosa 37 watch

Alexey: Citizen Tsuyosa 37

Since the debut of the first Citizen Tsuyosa series in 2022, I have been a fan of this line. I was fortunate to test the versions with blue and black dials from the first NJ150 series after reviewing the yellow version. I then called them the best affordable watch under 500 euros and still hold that opinion today. Four years later, Tsuyosa remains the best choice in its price segment, offering everything you need for everyday wear. Even after being introduced to the new Casio Edifice EFK-110, my opinion hasn't changed.

Interestingly, with the introduction of the reduced Tsuyosa 37 version, I found the perfect size, although I initially preferred the 40 mm model. The dimensions of the Tsuyosa 37 are 37 × 41.9 × 11.5 mm, which is not much smaller than the 40 × 45 × 11.7 mm of the Tsuyosa 40, but visually it seems more balanced. Despite the reduction, the watch looks good on my 18.5 cm wrist thanks to the smooth transition of the case into the bracelet.

The main advantage of the 40 mm version is the wide choice of dials. Currently, the Tsuyosa 37 is only available in the three colors shown in the photo, while the Tsuyosa 40 offers many more options. But given the three-year priority of the older model, this is likely to change. It would be great to see champagne and copper-orange dials in the reduced version.

Comparison of Casio Edifice EFK-110 and Citizen Tsuyosa 37

Why did I choose Citizen over Casio? After thoroughly getting to know both models, the choice comes down to charm and comfort. In terms of build quality, Casio excels, but this is exactly where my complaint about the EFK-110 lies. It sounds strange, but after comparison, it becomes clear: despite the high manufacturing quality, the EFK-110 seems too rigid and "mechanical". The case edges are sharper, tolerances are minimal, and the patterns on the dial create an industrial impression. All this makes the watch less "human".

The Citizen Tsuyosa, on the other hand, looks more elegant and graceful. The edges of the case and bracelet are not as sharp, the materials and textures of the dial are more pleasant. I also like the minimalist text on the Tsuyosa dial, unlike the Casio, where the Edifice name is placed above the Casio brand. Finally, the Citizen's "president" style bracelet might fall short in strength compared to the H-shaped Casio bracelet, but in terms of comfort for daily wear, I choose it.

Citizen Tsuyosa 37 - more comfortable watch for daily wear

Over the years, I have realized that comfort and convenience are the main factors that keep me returning to a watch. Of course, appearance is also important. The Citizen Tsuyosa 37 perfectly combines comfort and attractiveness. Ultimately, the watch doesn't feel budget despite its price of around 300 euros. The green version on my wrist looks great and wears very comfortably. After several days with the Edifice EFK-110, I didn't feel the same magic, so my choice is obvious. But now it's Dmitriy's turn.

If I'm not mistaken, this is my first episode of the “Watch Battle”. Before defending my choice, I ask for a little understanding and support. Please choose the Casio Edifice! If you don't think it's better (like I do), at least let me win the first fight (sorry, Alexey!).

I'll start with the price segment - up to 300 euros. That's great. Of course, I like expensive Jacob & Co. too, but for most of us, such watches remain only an object of admiration from afar. The line in which Tsuyosa and Edifice compete is a serious level for a wide audience of enthusiasts. I thank both brands for their attention to this segment, which helps many begin their fascination with mechanical watches with decent models.

As for my choice - the Casio Edifice EFK-110. I understand that Tsuyosa appeared almost four years earlier and managed to win fans. And it's fair - few could surpass Citizen... until recently. A year ago, when everyone already had G-Shock, Casio made their first attempt at mechanical watches with the Edifice EFK-100.

Why the new 38 mm Edifice EFK-110 is better

Some criticized Casio's choice of movement - Seiko Group through TMI NH35. Although I see nothing wrong with it, the new EFK-110 model received the Japanese Miyota 8215. You could say that Casio moved from one competitor to another. I personally like Miyota more, maybe because I've seen too many NH35 in watches that don't appeal to me. Thanks to the Miyota 8215, Casio was able to reduce the watch diameter by 1 mm (to 38 mm) and make them 0.7 mm thinner (11.8 mm). These changes are minor but make the watch more attractive to me. Moreover, now in the caliber, Citizen has no advantages - the mechanisms are practically identical.

Alexey already mentioned the limited choice of dials in Tsuyosa 37. For me, this is also an important factor in favor of Edifice. Green with a sunburst effect is definitely not my color. Maybe I'm alone in this opinion, but green on the dial doesn't appeal to me, especially with such an effect. Blue and pink are also not to my liking, so among the 37 mm Tsuyosa, there is no suitable option for me. And I really like the pattern on the EFK-110 dial, and the available colors give the watch a more mature look.

Wearing the EFK-110 for several days

Over several days of wearing the EFK-110, two things puzzled me. First, the connection between the case and the bracelet doesn't look quite smooth - there's a slight "dip" on the wrist. Second, the hands have luminous inserts, but the indices do not. In the dark, only the hands are visible, reducing the usefulness of the illumination. However, these nuances did not spoil my enjoyment of wearing them.

On a positive note, the accuracy of the Miyota 8215 is commendable. Casio states -20/+40 seconds per day, but my watch gained only 4 seconds daily. On the timegrapher in the office, the readings were within -1/+2 seconds in different positions. This is not a guarantee for all pieces, but a good indicator of the high accuracy of the caliber.

A matter of taste

What else to say? The Casio Edifice EFK-110 is a reliable watch with an integrated bracelet, nothing cheap about it. Everything looks and feels quality: sapphire glass, 100 m water resistance. Perhaps the design seems a bit "industrial", as Alexey noted, but for me, it's a matter of taste. You can compare with Nautilus and Royal Oak: some love elegant flowing lines, others - a more rigid industrial style.

Another matter of taste is the text on the dial. I think Citizen places its name too large and high, creating an imbalance. Casio, on the other hand, emphasizes Edifice, not the Casio brand, which nicely distinguishes the EFK-110 among other models.

Now your turn - make your choice! But before voting, reread my first paragraph. 😉
