Rolex meeting at Watches & Wonders Geneva

New Rolex models are among the most anticipated releases in the watch world, and meetings with the brand are always interesting: we know what to expect, yet we remain in anticipation of surprises. 2026 is significant for Rolex as the company celebrates the 100th anniversary of its iconic waterproof Oyster case. Without the Oyster, there would be no marine or dive watches from the brand. This brings us to the updated Rolex Yacht-Master II collection - regatta chronographs with a countdown feature. In brief, it's not just an excellent new chronograph from Rolex, but perhaps my favorite release from the brand in 2026. Historically, the Yacht-Master family has had both successes and commercial failures, but the new 2026 version is a significant leap forward.

Why Didn't Rolex Name It Yacht-Master III?

For Rolex, this would imply the introduction of new features. The Yacht-Master II is a Yacht-Master with a unique countdown chronograph system. Even with design and function updates, the watch remains the Yacht-Master II. In this case, Rolex not only updates the model but significantly enhances it in several key aspects. The previous generation of the Yacht-Master II was discontinued just about two years ago. This model was often perceived as "big Rolex watches at a discount," which was unjust considering the complexity of the in-house calibre 4161 mechanism installed in the original version.

Drawbacks of the Original Rolex Yacht-Master II

Firstly, the large 44 mm case was not very ergonomic and felt heavy on the wrist. The second drawback was the overly bright and flashy "Yacht-Master II" inscription on the bezel. The watch had an interesting system where the rotating bezel helped set the chronograph's duration, and the dual countdown scale could confuse the user. The main task of the Yacht-Master II is to provide marine watches with a programmable countdown timer from 1 to 10 minutes for sailing regattas. This is a niche yet important application that Rolex understands well and integrates into its marketing strategy. Although the previous model was not unattractive, the new 2026 design looks significantly better.

Key Features and Changes in Rolex Yacht-Master II 2026

On paper, the new model is similar to its predecessor: both versions have a 44 mm diameter and similar mechanism functions. Despite the similar sizes of Oystersteel and 18-carat yellow gold cases, the new cases are highly refined. They sit closer to the wrist, have shorter and thicker lugs, which improve the fit even on smaller wrists. The case is water-resistant up to 100 meters without needing to use screw-down chronograph pushers.

Rolex Yacht-Master II new ceramic bezel

The most noticeable update is the bezel. The original rotating Command bezel with text and countdown scale, which was complex to master, is gone. It has been replaced by a Cerachrom ceramic bezel with a classic 60-minute scale, similar to dive watches. A unique feature is the new rotation mechanics: the bezel rotates both ways, but with different force and clicks, creating a unique feel that is worth experiencing in person.

Dial Design and Regatta Timer Functionality

The 10-minute countdown scale is now placed on a white dial on a raised flange around the periphery. Despite concerns, this "shelf" looks good, providing readability and appeal to the watch. An arrow-shaped GMT hand is used to count down regatta time: red on the steel model and gold on the yellow gold version. The "Yacht-Master II" inscription remains but is now more discreetly placed on the countdown scale ring.

The dial displays the time with a small seconds hand at 6 o'clock, chronograph second hand, and chronograph minute hand. When the chronograph is not active, you can change the countdown duration in one-minute increments. Most regattas require a 10-minute countdown to the start, but this function can be useful in other situations too. A flyback function is also present. Since the countdown goes downwards, the chronograph second hand moves counterclockwise. Despite similarities with the previous version, the new watch uses an updated automatic mechanism adapted for the new button operation and bezel.

New Rolex 4162 Superlative Chronometer Movement

In 2026, the Yacht-Master II is equipped with the new caliber 4162 - an automatic movement with Superlative Chronometer certification. Its operating frequency is 4 Hz, power reserve is 72 hours, and accuracy is between -2 to +2 seconds per day. This mechanism is particularly pleasant to use thanks to the flyback function and countdown duration adjustment.

Versions and Price

There may be new dial colors in the future, but the white version is especially readable and sporty due to its contrast. The new Yacht-Master II is available in Oystersteel or 18-carat yellow gold cases, both with blue ceramic bezels and Oyster bracelets with three links. The clasps are equipped with comfort extensions and taper smoothly, reducing the feeling of bulk on the wrist.

The price for the Rolex Yacht-Master II 126680 in Oystersteel is $20,300 USD, while the 126688 version in 18-carat yellow gold is $57,800 USD.

This update to the Rolex Yacht-Master II demonstrates how the brand can maintain traditions while simultaneously improving the functionality and comfort of their watches, making them more suitable for modern users and specific tasks, such as sailing regattas.
