At the Watches and Wonders exhibition this year, many brands made only minor changes to existing models. There were few bright and extravagant premieres. A. Lange & Söhne were among those who focused on subtle refinements, yet revived one of their classic models with a new execution and movement. The new version of the A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Annual Calendar returns to a 16-year brand classic, and the result meets the expectations of even the most demanding Lange fans.

Compact Size and Updated Case Design

Although the changes might be called subtle refinements, the company introduced numerous improvements that make the new model noticeably different and, in the opinion of many, better than its predecessor. If the original Saxonia Annual Calendar had a diameter of 38.5 mm, the new version has been reduced to 36 mm, not counting the protrusion at the 10 o'clock mark. The 2.5 mm difference seems minor, but it's quite noticeable on the wrist (on a wrist with a 17 cm circumference). The novelty is available in white and pink gold, with the case thickness remaining the same at 9.8 mm. The watch features sapphire crystals and a water resistance of 30 meters, which, although not much, is in line with the class. The straps are made of alligator leather with a classic clasp matching the case color.

Ergonomics and Comfort of Wearing

The watch sits very comfortably on the wrist. The case features a simple yet elegant shape that works well for everyday use. The straps are made of high-quality alligator leather, noticeably different from cheaper counterparts that may take a long time to break in or not conform to the wrist shape at all. Although some experts would prefer a butterfly clasp to preserve the strap, the classic buckle provides minimal thickness and comfort around the wrist. The main change in the updated model is the additional pusher at the 10 o'clock position. Although it somewhat disrupts the minimalist design of the case, its functionality is hard to overestimate. The new mechanism allows this pusher to advance all annual calendar indications at once, greatly simplifying the setup and eliminating the need for tiny correction tools that are still provided.

Updated Dial and Design Details

The white gold case matches the silver dial with white gold accents, while the pink gold comes with a cool gray dial and pink gold elements. The large date indicator at the "12 o'clock" position and the overall layout of the indicators remain classic. However, small details have changed: for instance, the line around the minute markers has disappeared, adding air to the dial and making it less cluttered.

The moon disc has become more expressive - with more stars and astronomical density, imitating the Milky Way. The sub-dials received centers with azurage and bevels in the "pie-pan" shape for greater depth and volume compared to the original. Overall, the updated dial looks more expressive, although there are no significant differences from the previous version.

New Movement L207.1 - Technological Breakthrough

At the heart of the new Saxonia Annual Calendar beats the entirely new caliber L207.1. This is indeed a significant update. The micro-rotor has been replaced with a full-sized rotor made of pink gold with a platinum weight to maximize inertia. The power reserve has increased from 48 to 60 hours at a frequency of 21,600 semi-oscillations per hour. Additionally, a new single-button calendar correction function has been implemented. The mechanism is decorated with traditional hand-engraving of the balance bridge with a swan-neck regulator, a three-quarter plate made of warm German silver, as well as classic stripes and perlage. Despite the absence of visible indicators, the back cover of the mechanism looks no less attractive than the front panel. Personally, I spent quite a bit of time admiring the finish of the mechanism.

Conclusion: The Importance of Small Changes in the A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Annual Calendar

The updated version of the Saxonia Annual Calendar proves that small changes can have a significant effect. Objectively, the previous versions had no serious shortcomings, but the new mechanism and more compact size are sure to resonate with Lange fans and the broader watch enthusiast audience. Particularly noteworthy is the single-button corrector for the entire calendar - a significant advantage demonstrating that the brand focuses not only on aesthetic purity of design but also on functionality. The price of the A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Annual Calendar is 65,000 euros in both pink gold (model 331.033 E) and white gold (331.026 E).
