Key Takeaways

  • Luxury watches focusing solely on time can offer elegance and high craftsmanship.
  • Simplicity in design is often more challenging and rewarding than complexity.
  • There are high-class time-only watches from brands like Daniel Roth, Patek Philippe, and A. Lange & Söhne.

When exploring the creations of our favorite masters of high watchmaking, it's easy to get lost in the complexities of ultra-complicated watches.

Sometimes, however, we desire the high level of quality and elegance applied to simpler models. Perhaps you prefer basic watches without unnecessary complications but value the rarity and craftsmanship of Haute Horlogerie. In this review, we share our favorite high-class watches that display only the time!

To make the selection more rigorous, I set additional criteria. The watches must have been released recently - within the last two years. We do not consider sports models, so there will be no Royal Oak or Nautilus on the list. We also exclude tourbillons, regulators, jumping hours, and similar complications that we do not consider simple. Today, we focus exclusively on simple time-only watches executed at a high level. This list is not exhaustive, and I invite you to share your options in the comments. Let's begin!

Daniel Roth Extra Plat Souscription

I start the list with a bit of intrigue. These watches were released in a limited edition of only 20 pieces in 2025, so you are unlikely to acquire them. Nevertheless, our editor-in-chief, who is rarely impressed, was thrilled upon seeing them, so I simply had to include them in the review. If you liked this model, you might consider the regular platinum version released this year.

Daniel Roth Extra Plat Souscription watch

The Daniel Roth Extra Plat Souscription is a simplification from its predecessor with a tourbillon. These are genuine two-handed watches, fully meeting our criteria. The model's high-class nature is confirmed by the form-defining movement that echoes the double ellipse case made of 18-carat yellow gold, measuring 35.5 × 38.6 × 7.7 mm. The new caliber DR002 was developed by the founders of Fabrique du Temps - Michel Navas and Enrico Barbasini.

The dial is kept in a classic style. It features intricate guilloché on a "clou de Paris" pattern background. A clear row of printed Roman numerals and two simple hands complete the look. The logo and unique serial number are placed outside the dial, freeing up space for time perception. When available, the price of the Extra Plat Souscription was 45,000 Swiss francs.

Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse in Green

This section of our favorite high-class time-only watches continues the elliptical shape theme. Almost the entire WatchTested team is delighted with the new Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse 5738G-001 model. The only remark was the contrasting stitching on the strap. Nonetheless, this does not detract from enjoying the design.

Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse watch in green

The Golden Ellipse is built around the golden ratio - the case length is 1.6181 times the width. Although designers do not always agree with the "divine" nature of this proportion, for us, it is an important aesthetic element. The white gold case measures 34.5 mm in width, 39.5 mm in length, and is only 5.9 mm thick. You might argue that this doesn't perfectly align with the golden ratio - you're right, the proportions apply to the dial, not all case models.

Inside is the caliber 240 - an elegant micro-rotor movement, which does not replicate the elliptical case shape, hidden thanks to the white gold case back. The main highlight is the magnificent green sunburst dial with simple applied indices. The watch looks very elegant and sophisticated. The price of the Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse 5738G-001 is 40,500 euros.

Louis Vuitton Escale Malachite

Admittedly, Louis Vuitton is not the first brand that comes to mind when discussing favorite high-class time-only watches. Suitcases? Certainly. Leather goods? Of course. But platinum watches with a malachite dial and case insert for 65,000 euros? The Escale Malachite is an unusual model that is hard to ignore, and we love it.

The Escale design is inspired by Louis Vuitton's trunk-making heritage, and the travel-related details look charming. The distinctive lugs and main hour markers refer to the brand's signature hardware. But the main attraction is the stone. The striped green malachite adorns not only the dial but also the seamless ring forming the case insert.

This is a technically complex solution, considering that engineers managed to attach the platinum lugs to a material more often used for decorative purposes than for structure. The 40 × 10.34 mm platinum case is water-resistant up to 50 meters. The model was released in a limited edition of 30 pieces.

Inside runs the automatic caliber LFT023 with a 22-carat pink gold micro-rotor and a 50-hour power reserve. The movement is visible through a sapphire case back with a platinum rim. The main focus is the rich green stone, which mirrors the dial's pattern and gives the model cohesion. The price of the Louis Vuitton Escale Malachite was 65,500 euros excluding taxes.

Laurent Ferrier Classic Origin Beige

Beige can be a risky choice. A poorly chosen shade is associated with dusty carpets and conservative clothing. But when done right, it looks luxurious, warm, and restrained. Laurent Ferrier achieved this with the Classic Origin Beige, and the brand did an excellent job. Combined with the high quality of all LF models, these watches deservedly enter our list of favorite high-class time-only watches.

Laurent Ferrier Classic Origin Beige watch

The Classic Origin returns in a new guise for Laurent Ferrier's 15th anniversary. The familiar pebble-shaped case measuring 40 × 10.7 mm is made of 5N red gold and conceals a beige opaline dial with an unexpectedly complex layout.

There are central crosshairs, a brown railway-style minute track, red 13-24 hour numbers inside the minute scale, a small seconds at the "6 o'clock" position, and signature Assegai hands made of 18-carat gold. Despite the richness of details, the watch looks calm and restrained.

Inside is the manual caliber LF116.01 with an 80-hour power reserve. Laurent Ferrier particularly notes the long ratchet lever and Breguet overcoil, which connoisseurs will appreciate even if they pretend not to be interested. The price of the Classic Origin Beige is 48,000 Swiss francs.

A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Thin Onyx - Our Favorite High-Class Time-Only Watches

The Saxonia Thin has always seemed to me an example of how difficult it is to achieve simplicity. Two hands, a few markers, a thin case - sounds simple, right? However, A. Lange & Söhne turn this minimalist formula into something quietly impressive. This firmly places them in our list of favorite high-class time-only watches.

A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Thin Onyx watch

The recent limited editions of the Saxonia Thin Onyx add a glossy black onyx dial to the formula. The models are available in 18-carat Honeygold and platinum. Both versions feature a solid onyx dial with a deep mirror shine, giving the watches a more dramatic look without disrupting their restrained character. The 40 mm case has a thin profile of 6.2 mm. Some might prefer a 37 mm variant, but the combination of onyx and Honeygold compensates for much.

Inside runs the manual caliber L093.1, just 2.9 mm thick with a 72-hour power reserve. Through the transparent case back, you can see untreated German silver plates, blue screws, gold chatons, and a hand-engraved balance cock - everything you expect from Lange. At the front, onyx remains the main feature. Such simple watches live or die by their details, and the Saxonia Thin Onyx executes them perfectly. Lange will produce only 200 pieces of each version, prices are available upon request.

Final Thoughts

That's it - our far from exhaustive list of favorite high-class time-only watches. We could go on. For example, the Breguet 5177 with a time-only function could easily have made the list. There are also many independent watchmakers with impressive models.

Collection of luxury time-only watches

The main idea is to highlight the appeal of basic time-only watches. These models often remain in the shadow of complex prestigious watches. However, from a design perspective, I personally find simple watches more interesting. After all, getting the basics right is much harder than layering one complication after another.
