Fears adds a sporty touch to its collection with the release of the second model in the Endurance Specification (ES) series.
The new Brunswick 40 Helmsman model features a 316L stainless steel case with a matte, finely brushed finish. This approach continues the line from last year, introduced by the Redcliff 39.5 mm ES model. That model used a hardened matte case with components covered in black DLC coating. This time, Fears has chosen a different visual style. The Brunswick case remains the brand's most recognizable silhouette. Here, Fears applies similar finishing to this classic shape, making the model closer to the traditional Fears style. Named Helmsman, this model draws inspiration from yachting. Its matte case reduces glare on open water in bright sunlight, giving the watch a more utilitarian and purposeful character.
Yachting Inspiration and Model Functionality
Yachting is close to my heart. As a certified skipper, I love charting courses along scenic coastlines, and island hopping and quiet anchorages are my ideal retreat. Although I've participated in regattas, I prefer recreational sailing. Fears clearly understands this approach. Instead of adding a regatta countdown timer, the Brunswick 40 Helmsman keeps it simple. The main focus is on clarity and reliability, as this watch is solely for time display.
The Helmsman model, although following the Redcliff 39.5 ES, more closely resembles last year's Odyssey Edition. The latter, created in collaboration with Angus Collins, featured a bright white textured dial. Its design proved popular, and the limited edition of 100 pieces quickly sold out. Helmsman returns to this concept but in a non-restricted format.

History and Connection with the Fears Experimental 01 Prototype
The model's history dates back to Fears Experimental 01 - a prototype that supported Angus Collins during his solo rowing journey around the British Isles. Although the expedition was interrupted due to weather conditions, the watch proved its reliability. Experimental 01, however, was not intended for public release.

It was followed by the Odyssey Edition, with refinements, limited to 100 pieces and polished elements on the lugs and bezel to distinguish it from the prototype. However, this choice of finish softened the tool-like nature of the watch. The Helmsman achieves a more successful balance. It borrows design solutions from Experimental 01 and transfers them to the Brunswick 40 platform. The bezel, lugs, sides of the case, and crown feature a matte finish, emphasizing the model's strength and utility. The sapphire crystal with double-sided anti-reflective coating further reduces glare in bright light.

Dial Design and Legibility
A marine blue ring track around the dial adds contrast and emphasizes the navigational theme. The white print on the ring maintains clarity and legibility. The overall design looks clean, functional, and nautical. The matte white dial features fine sector engraving, adding depth, while the blue ring track neatly frames the entire composition.

The hour and minute hands are in a pipette style with Grade A BGW9 Super-LumiNova luminescent coating for good visibility in low light conditions. The blue PVD-coated second hand complements the color scheme but lacks lume, so it doesn't glow in the dark.
The applied numerals at the 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions resemble the Rolex Explorer style, with baton indices filling the gaps. Overall, the dial is balanced and easy to read.

Technical Specifications and Functional Enhancements
Alongside visual changes, the watch has improved functionality. Water resistance has been increased to 200 meters (20 atm) compared to 150 meters in the Odyssey Edition. The sapphire crystal case back reveals the La Joux-Perret G101 automatic movement with manual winding and hacking seconds. The movement operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) and has a power reserve of 68 hours. The rotor is decorated with a blue "Bristol Flower" pattern. The case thickness has increased to 11.9 mm (+0.84 mm), but in practice, this change is barely noticeable. With a lug-to-lug width of 46.5 mm, the watch remains comfortable to wear.
Final Specifications and Price
The model comes with a textured white FKM rubber strap, 20 mm wide, with contrasting blue stitching and a black lining of the same material. The strap is durable, comfortable, and perfect for warm weather. The buckle is fully matte stainless steel with a classic clasp. Quick-release spring bars make strap changes easy. Blue locking elements add a subtle design accent.
Fears Brunswick 40 Helmsman Endurance Specification is a regular production model, available now at a price of £3,450. More details can be found on the official Fears website.
