After a long wait, Rolex has finally announced its new 2021 models on the scheduled date - April 7. Among the most talked-about and anticipated releases this year were the Explorer I and Explorer II lines in connection with the 50th anniversary of the Explorer.
In the watch community, there was much discussion about the possible reduction of the Explorer II's size, perhaps with the replacement of the matte stainless steel bezel with ceramic, as well as some speculation about some 'anniversary green.' Well, none of this materialized, and once again, Rolex sticks to what it does best, implementing very subtle classic changes - not surprising for experienced enthusiasts and fans of Rolex.

The most radical changes were made to the new Explorer 1 Ref. 124270 with a sharp reversal back to the original 36mm size and a never-before-seen two-tone or Rolesor version art. 124273. While several watch magazines made this prediction, I don't think anyone truly believed it, especially considering that Rolex has recently been trending towards increasing sizes, not reducing them. This was evident in the recently released new Submariner 124060, whose case size increased from 40 to 41mm.
This return to 36mm on the Explorer 1 is certainly a welcome change for veteran Rolex lovers who adore the old original model for its understated simplicity, partly due to its very comfortable size and versatility with different strap colors and materials. Another notable change in the new Ref. 124270 is the movement of the hands, specifically the power reserve and accuracy! Now the Rolex 3230 provides a power reserve of up to 70 hours with an accuracy of -2/+2 seconds per day.
Another very subtle change is the relocation of the 'Explorer' name under the Rolex logo at the '12 o'clock' mark instead of its previous position around 6 o'clock on the 39mm version. Although this is a very minor change, with this simple dial adjustment, it appears slightly more classic. This new model remains on an Oyster stainless steel bracelet, one of the best bracelets in the industry.
Explorer 1, as it has for decades, looks fantastic on a leather strap. This is truly a versatile watch, bearing the name of the perfect 'one-collection watch.' If you have small or medium wrists, this might be your calling. Head to your local Rolex AD and put your name on the waiting list for the new Explorer 124270.
