The history of Porsche is filled with automotive gems. One of the most memorable is the 356 Speedster model. The 356 is notable for being the first car under the Porsche brand. The Speedster is even more special because it is the convertible version of the 356. Moreover, it is simply magnificent. A special feature of the 356 Speedster is its tachometer, which has clear fonts in a distinctive green hue. This very tachometer inspired the creation of the new Kanister collection watches from Reservoir.
Readers familiar with previous Reservoir watch models will find the Kanister familiar - a retrograde minute hand, jumping hour indicator, and power reserve indicator - all are present here. Essentially, the main components are the same, but the execution is new, giving us a watch that looks fresh and different.
In the case of the Kanister model, we have a 41.5mm Grade 5 titanium case with a satin finish. It is equipped with a screw-down crown and has a water resistance of 50 meters. From a practical standpoint, this gives us a lightweight and quite durable watch that can be worn daily, unless diving is in the plan.
In my untrained opinion, the dial looks like a fairly accurate copy of the 356 Speedster's tachometer. The choice of type and colors seems precise. And since the 356 Speedster's tachometer stops at 6,000 revolutions, it is quite suitable for timing purposes. After all, there are 60 minutes in an hour.
So, we have a retrograde minute display, a jumping hour indicator at the “6 o'clock” position, and under the jumping hour, a power reserve indicator styled as a fuel gauge. To complete the look, the Kanister model comes with a black leather strap, whose design is reminiscent of vintage sports seats. Speaking of straps, the Kanister comes with an additional NATO strap. And if you're a leather enthusiast, you can order the watch with three additional colored leather straps.
Amazingly, all this was made possible by the ETA 2824 caliber, rather than a custom-made in-house caliber. Of course, the ETA 2824 is modified, but this means that the watch is not overly expensive. According to Reservoir, it is equipped with a proprietary module of 124 components. The need to manage complications affects the power reserve, but Reservoir claims the Kanister can run up to 37 hours. The movement can also be seen through the display case back. However, apart from the custom rotor, there is nothing else to see. It appears the movement has not been decorated at all.
Since Reservoir watches are mostly equipped with the same caliber, they might appear somewhat similar. The retrograde minutes, jumping hours, and power reserve indicators are in the same place. Nevertheless, the brand has skillfully designed their watches to look quite expressive. And I believe that the Kanister watch is a sincere tribute to one of the most desirable Porsche cars.
Undoubtedly, this is a must-have watch for those fortunate enough to have a 356 Speedster in their garage. The price of the Reservoir Kanister starts at $4,150.
