Key Takeaways

  • Unique retro case design with radial brushing
  • Bright Electric Teal dial with luminescent coating
  • Equipped with the reliable Sellita 330-2 movement

Today we review an interesting model from a microbrand - the Michel GMT from Tessé Watches based in Toronto, Canada.

I wore this watch for about three weeks and can confidently say it's my favorite Canadian model and brand. Previously, I reviewed several other Canadian microbrands like York & Front Burrard and the newer Heron Watches Gladiateur from Montreal. Both were decent, but lacked passion, creativity, and quality. Michel GMT surpasses them in all respects, and given the scarcity of the local watch market, this model is of particular interest.

Case Design

Tessé Michel GMT case design detail

At first glance, Michel GMT catches the eye with numerous design solutions that are not overwhelming but harmoniously combined. The striking retro cushion-shaped case is particularly noteworthy, not only accurately resembling a cushion but also containing elements of a tonneau silhouette. The top of the case features radial brushing, creating long, neat strokes that beautifully play with light from different angles. Such meticulous workmanship indicates a careful attention to detail - an excellent start for a new brand and debut model.

Turning the watch sideways or changing the wrist position reveals even more complexity and attention to detail. The case profile is adorned with vertical engraving of four smooth lines following the case contour. Shortened, bulky, and highly polished lugs harmoniously blend into the overall design, creating a contrast with the radial brushing on the top of the case.

I rarely delve into technical specifications, but it's worth noting that Tessé excellently worked on the dimensions and proportions. On my 16.5 cm wrist, the watch is very comfortable and does not look bulky despite its 40 mm diameter. The lug-to-lug distance is only 47.1 mm, and the soft leather strap does not extend beyond the wrist edges. The case thickness is an impressive 10.8 mm, housing a Sellita 330-2 movement visible through the sapphire case back - a deserved praise to the founder and designer Thomas.

Dial Layout

Tessé Michel GMT Electric Teal dial with baton markers

If the case is already attractive, the Michel GMT dial is even more intriguing with its bright "Electric Teal" color. The shade combines retro notes with a futuristic vibe, it's bright and eye-catching. In certain lighting conditions, shades of turquoise and Adriatic Sea color are noticeable. The dial is multi-layered: the center features a radial sun pattern, while three rings with applied baton hour markers are positioned along the edge. The dial center remains clean and flat.

Hands and markers of the Tessé Michel GMT

The hour and minute hands are stick-shaped, the second hand is a thin needle. All hands and markers are coated with Superluminova X1, including the GMT hand's tip. The bright orange GMT hand particularly highlights the watch's "electric" theme. The GMT text on the dial is in the same orange color. The date window is at the "3 o'clock" position, adhering to traditional watch design standards.

The logo is neatly placed at "12 o'clock" and does not distract from the main dial elements.

General Impressions

Overall look of the Tessé Michel GMT watch

The Tessé Michel GMT pleasantly surprised me, and as a Canadian, I feel proud of such a unique and interesting model's appearance on the market. The case shape is unusual yet restrained, with elements of original design that do not cross into excess.

Tessé Michel GMT case and strap combination

These watches are suitable for daily wear, travel, and even informal special occasions thanks to their bright and expressive look. Michel GMT is an example of what a microbrand should be: unique, distinct from large brands, yet comfortable and unobtrusive. Excellent proportions, a thin case, a rich dial color, and a quality movement with a transparent case back make these watches an attractive choice at a reasonable price of $2105.
