Another Friday - another list!
This week we begin a new series dedicated to finding alternatives to the world's most popular watches. In the debut issue, we present five alternatives to the iconic Rolex Datejust. A classic from The Crown with a history dating back to 1945, these are some of the most sought-after watches for everyday wear. Despite their outstanding legacy, many prefer other models for daily use. Reasons can vary: budget, personal preference, or simply a desire for a different style. For all such people, we have prepared a selection of five worthy alternatives to the Rolex Datejust.
It is important to note that in this series, we only consider new models from current brand collections. In the future, we do not rule out creating lists with options on the secondary market, which will open up even more possibilities. For now, let's get acquainted with the five best alternatives to the Rolex Datejust that you can purchase today.
Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra 150M
First on the list is the wide range of Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra. Like the Rolex Datejust, the Aqua Terra is available in various sizes and dial colors. Currently, Omega offers Aqua Terra models in sizes 30 mm and 34 mm for women, as well as 38 mm and 41 mm for men and women. Regardless of size, the Aqua Terra is a versatile watch, earning recognition in the Omega collection and popular among brand enthusiasts.

In recent years, the most notable releases have been models with glossy dials and curved, tapering bracelets. It all started with the Aqua Terra Shades series in 2023. The collection then expanded with new dial colors, including black dial versions in several sizes. Today, the choice comes down to two main options: models with teak-deck inspired dials and bracelets with flat links or glossy dials and curved bracelets.

Many Options for Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra
The 38 mm versions are equipped with the Omega caliber 8800, and the 41 mm versions with the caliber 8900. Both movements are METAS certified as Master Chronometers, feature Co-Axial escapements, and provide accuracy within 0/+5 seconds per day. The power reserve for caliber 8800 is 55 hours, and for 8900, it's 60 hours. These movements are reliable and perfectly suited for the Aqua Terra models.

The choice depends on personal preferences. Members of the WatchTested team can name different options, highlighting the collection's versatility. Personally, I prefer the 38 mm versions with a glossy black or sandy beige dial, both costing around €7,300. The 41 mm model with a teak-deck dial and flat-link bracelet is slightly cheaper - around €7,000. Both alternatives are more affordable than the Rolex Datejust and are considered the best replacements for The Crown's icon.

Grand Seiko SLGB003 and SLGB005
Choosing one Grand Seiko model is difficult - the Japanese brand offers many worthy alternatives to the Rolex Datejust. You can choose an automatic model or Grand Seiko's unique Spring Drive technology. Additionally, the brand offers a titanium case for those seeking a lightweight alternative to traditional stainless steel. The Heritage collection, inspired by classic 44GS and 62GS models from the 1960s, is an excellent choice. Personally, I like the SBGA413 with a 62GS-style case and a delicate pink dial reminiscent of cherry blossoms.

However, we chose another path. For Grand Seiko fans seeking maximum timing precision, the U.F.A. series offers special models. The first two Grand Seiko with the U.F.A. (Ultra Fine Accuracy) designation were introduced last year. Both are equipped with the new Spring Drive caliber 9RB2 - a revolutionary movement with an accuracy of ±20 seconds per year. It's the most accurate spring-driven caliber to date. Additionally, it has a 72-hour power reserve and moves the power reserve indicator to the back of the movement, simplifying the dial design.

Grand Seiko U.F.A. in Titanium and Steel
Besides high precision, the compact caliber allows for smaller Spring Drive models. The first two are the SLGB001 in platinum and the SLGB003 in titanium. The titanium model is perfect for those seeking a lightweight alternative to the Datejust. My favorite is the SLGB005, introduced a bit later last year. I have repeatedly praised this watch because it represents a complete package, like the Datejust. The modern angular stainless steel case measures 37 mm, with a thickness of 11.4 mm and a lug-to-lug length of 44.3 mm. The elegant case is paired with a beautiful purple dial and a comfortable steel bracelet.

Since the SLGB005 is the first U.F.A. model in stainless steel, additional versions with different dials are expected to be released. After wearing the limited edition with a purple dial for several days, I was impressed by the quality. If I had to choose a modern watch for daily wear right now, it would be the SLGB005. Yes, the price of €11,000 is higher than the Rolex Datejust, but the experience is deeper. For those looking to save, Grand Seiko offers many more affordable models. The new U.F.A. are some of the brand's most impressive watches in recent years.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual
If you want a Rolex watch but not necessarily a Datejust, the brand offers an alternative - the Oyster Perpetual. This model lacks a date and, correspondingly, the Cyclops magnifying glass, which many find unaesthetic. Meanwhile, the Oyster Perpetual retains the status, versatility, and prestige of its date model. The current generation of the Oyster Perpetual was introduced in 2021, and since then, the brand has gradually expanded the lineup with new options, including popular dial colors.

Today, the Oyster Perpetual is available in sizes 28, 31, 34, 36, and 41 mm with a wide range of dial colors. Personally, we prefer the 36 mm (ref. 126000) and 41 mm (ref. 134300) models. Notably, the 36 mm version is available with a soft blue dial reminiscent of Tiffany, which is not available in the 41 mm model.

Perfect Watches for Beginners
Both models are equipped with Rolex's own caliber 3230, with a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, a 70-hour power reserve, and an accuracy of ±2 seconds per day. This reliable movement makes the Oyster Perpetual an excellent choice for daily wear and an ideal starter Rolex model. They are significantly cheaper than the Datejust: 36 mm costs around €6,550, 41 mm - €6,900, while the Datejust with a smooth bezel is about €1,500 more expensive. Prices for the Datejust with a white fluted bezel are even higher.

Cartier Santos
Regular readers of WatchTested know that the Cartier Santos Galbée XL is a team favorite. Dan often wears his watch, and it has inspired many of us to buy it. Although Dan's model is discontinued, the current Cartier Santos lineup is an excellent alternative to the Rolex Datejust. The collection includes Small, Medium, Large, and Extra Large models made of stainless steel, titanium, and precious metals.

Technically, only the Large model is a competitor to the Datejust, as it is often equipped with a date window at the 6 o'clock position. However, all Santos sizes are suitable for stylish daily wear and can replace the Datejust.

Finding the Right Size Cartier Santos
Gradient dials in green and blue look great on the Santos and expand the selection for those who want something other than the classic silver dial with black Roman numerals. Such options are available for the Medium and Large models.

For size comparison: the Medium 35.1 mm has a case length of 41.9 mm, while the Large 39.8 mm is 47.5 mm from lug to lug. Since Santos is a square watch, they stand out on the wrist. The Medium model is the most popular among the WatchTested team as it looks more elegant and balanced.

Both versions are equipped with the automatic Cartier caliber 1847 MC, with a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and a 42-hour power reserve. The compact movement makes the case thin and comfortable to wear.

Even the Large model is comfortable thanks to the curved case shape, which fits the wrist perfectly. However, it is recommended to try on both sizes before purchasing to determine the most comfortable one. After choosing the size and dial, the Cartier Santos will become a stylish and functional alternative to the Datejust. The Medium versions cost around €8,200, and the Large - €9,000.

Traska Commuter
The fifth alternative is more affordable and belongs to the young American brand Traska. The first four options are comparable in price to the Datejust, while the Traska Commuter is an excellent choice for those who do not want to spend as much. I tested the Commuter 38 without a date with an Adriatic blue dial. The lineup also includes models with dates. Cases are available in sizes 34, 36, and 38 mm, allowing you to choose the optimal size for any wrist. The color palette changes with each release, including new and size-dependent options. This approach keeps the collection fresh and interesting.

Traska Commuter - The Complete Package
The main advantage of the Traska Commuter is that it is the best in its price segment for everyday wear. Prices for the models are: 34 mm - $630, 36 mm - $690, 38 mm - $700. For this money, you get quality watches that improve with each release. For example, the Commuter 38 features a stainless steel case with a diameter of 38.5 mm, a length of 46 mm from lug to lug, and a thickness of 10.5 mm. Additionally, the case thickness without glass is only 8.75 mm - an impressive figure.

The case harmoniously combines polished and matte surfaces, enhancing visual perception. Additionally, the watch is coated with a special compound that protects against scratches during everyday use. The dial is styled to resemble the Rolex Datejust and Oyster Perpetual, with sunburst effects and baton indexes - an excellent budget option.

Inside is an automatic Miyota 9039 with a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and a 42-hour power reserve. Choosing Miyota allows maintaining an affordable price without losing reliability. On the wrist, the watch feels very comfortable, largely thanks to the bracelet.

The bracelet is a three-row Oyster style, with screw pins and a tool-free micro-adjustment system, making it easy to fit. It is both flexible and durable, making the Commuter comfortable for long wear. Overall, the Traska Commuter is the best budget alternative to the Rolex Datejust.

Conclusion: Top 5 Rolex Datejust Alternatives
Here are our five best alternatives to the Rolex Datejust. Of course, there are many other worthy models that could have made this list. Therefore, we want to note a few options worthy of attention.

One of them is the Tudor Royal. If you like the recognizable Datejust design with a fluted bezel, the Royal is an excellent choice. The 28, 34, and 38 mm models are inspired by the Datejust, while the 41 mm version is closer to the Rolex Day-Date. All are available in stainless steel for under €3,000.
Another option is the Longines Conquest in sizes 30, 34, 38, and 41 mm. These watches combine classic and modern style and cost under €2,500.
The last noteworthy representative of the Swatch Group is the Tissot Gentleman. This stylish model for daily wear is available in various configurations. The best alternative to the Datejust is the classic 40 mm stainless steel version with a variety of dials, costing no more than €1,000.
