The Air-King is undoubtedly one of my favorite Rolex models.
Since 2017, I have owned the reference 114200, which I purchased during a trip to Milan in my late twenties. The Air-King has always been somewhat of a 'black sheep' in the Rolex lineup. It's not a classic Oyster Perpetual, nor is it purely a sports watch like a chronograph or diver's model. This model offers uniqueness and individuality. The Oyster Perpetual 36mm is a respectable watch, but it is quite austere, differing mainly in dial color (except for recent limited editions). The Air-King has always stood out with its play on markers, indices (sometimes painted, sometimes applied), and a variety of dial finishes - from lacquered to sunburst, in different colors.
The new Air-King 126900, which I have personally worn and tested over the past few weeks, and which I have admired since the release of the almost identical 116900 in 2016, confirms this concept. Now, the watch does not have the old Oyster Perpetual case shape and resembles no previously created Rolex models in terms of its dial. The Air-King has become a separate category of watches, radically changing its form and ideology since its creation as a watch for British pilots in 1945.
Improvements Compared to the Past

Before 2016, the Air-King always had a case size of 34mm, and many enthusiasts considered it too small for modern watches. The smaller case size was a functional solution for pilots who needed freedom and ease of wrist movement when controlling an airplane in stressful situations. The new Air-King is now only available in a 40mm case - a significant size increase linked to the new concept of the watch as a modern 'land speed watch'. This is related to the Air-King being partially developed in honor of the Bloodhound LSR - a British land-speed car capable of reaching speeds up to 1000 mph.

The shape and size of the case are now almost identical to the modern Rolex Submariner, with some calling it a 'super case'. The side of the case has the signature flat look and also features a similar winding crown and crown guard. Meanwhile, the thin, highly polished stainless steel bezel remains, now flat or sloped like the Rolex Explorer I, instead of the previous domed style. The model 126900 now appears fully sporty, no longer serving as a transition between classic and sport in the Rolex catalog.

With the increase in the case size, the bracelet has also been enlarged - now measuring 21mm due to the extended distance between the case lugs. All these changes make the fit of the reference 126900 significantly larger and more noticeable compared to its predecessor.
Everyday Wear

The old Air-King 34mm, which I wore daily from 2017 to 2020 and still occasionally wear, was undoubtedly the most comfortable Rolex, or any watch, I've ever owned. With the new dimensions of the reference 126900, the situation has changed. Although the watch remains very comfortable and comparable in comfort to the Submariner or the new Explorer 40mm, it no longer possesses the 'forget and wear' level of comfort that the previous model had. The old Air-King sometimes literally disappeared on the wrist, making it an ideal choice for daily use. The new, larger, and modernized Air-King feels more noticeable.
A positive change in daily wear is the more striking visual effect and the unique, captivating dial. The size of the watch attracts more attention, and the dial makes the eye linger, trying to catch the signature green color on the long, thin second hand and the Rolex logo at the 12 o'clock mark.
Outstanding Dial

It is impossible not to mention that the most noticeable and perhaps the most controversial novelty of the Air-King is its dial. It is presented in one configuration, shown in the review photos - a combination of traditional Rolex colors applied in an unconventional way. As mentioned, the second hand and Rolex logo are now green, and the Rolex crown on the dial is bright yellow.

The placement of the numbers on the dial is dramatically different from the usual - double numbers are painted, while 3, 6, and 9 are large applied Arabic numerals with a luminescent coating. Upon close inspection, the dial seems overloaded with information, but when viewed from a normal time-reading distance, the complexity of perception is mitigated. The layout of the dial repeats the design of the Bloodhound LSR car speedometer, which is an interesting idea that would have been hard to predict back in 2016. The font of the 'Air-King' inscription remains partially italicized but is now shifted down, closer to the 6 o'clock mark. I really like the new dial, although I understand it evokes polar opinions - many prefer the traditional design. The new style is far from classic, it is rather experimental, dynamic, and almost 'unpredictable' - which is unusual for Rolex.
Movement
The watch is equipped with the caliber 3230 - a notable upgrade from the previous model 116900 and the caliber 3130. The new movement provides an increased power reserve of up to 70 hours and features a modern escapement system. When hand-winding, I immediately felt that the movement operates more smoothly and better suits the increased size of the watch. As always, the movement is certified as a superlative chronometer, having passed rigorous post-assembly tests.
Final Impressions

This is an excellent watch for those who want a sporty Rolex while avoiding clichés. The Air-King has transformed into a full-fledged sports model with a unique dial. The increased size expands the circle of potential owners, moving from the 'small watch' niche to the 'universal size' category that Rolex has honed over the years.
Technical specifications do not need detailed mention: the Oyster case guarantees classic water resistance up to 100 meters thanks to the screw-down winding crown. Readability is excellent due to the contrast of white on black and bright color accents. For those who have yet to delve into the world of Rolex collecting with iconic models like the Submariner and Daytona, the Air-King will be a great starting point in getting to know the most famous and respected watch brand.
