Key Takeaways

  • DUG combines Glashütte craftsmanship with Swiss movements from Sellita.
  • Purist series offers customizable options with various colors and straps.
  • DUG presents an affordable entry into Glashütte's renowned watchmaking.

The new neoclassical German brand DUG offers a unique proposition in the modern watch market.

DUG Purist Typ 1 watch showcasing its neoclassical design

DUG stands for 'Deutsche Uhrenmanufaktur Glashütte'. This is primarily a descriptive name indicating the brand's German origins and its production in Glashütte. This is generally true. The uniqueness of DUG lies in the fact that although most of the decoration and assembly takes place in the famous Glashütte region in Saxony, the watch movements are sourced from Switzerland - from manufacturer Sellita. While the watches do not feature German-made movements, DUG is entitled to use the name 'Glashütte' in the brand and on the dial, as the company is located in the namesake city, and a significant part of the added value (such as decoration) and final assembly are done here. Currently, DUG sells its watches directly to consumers, debuting with two similar models - DUG Purist Typ 1 and Typ 2.

Features of the DUG Brand and Market Positioning

My interest in DUG stems from the fact that despite its high quality, only experienced watch collectors can truly understand the brand's value and unique offering. If you are familiar with high-end brands like A. Lange & Söhne and Glashütte Original, you likely appreciate the heritage and watchmaking craftsmanship of the region. The Glashütte region has a special design philosophy and traditions in decoration and craftsmanship. For a long time, the most affordable watches from the region were Nomos - a recognized leader in value among Glashütte watches with in-house movements. However, most Nomos models are twice as expensive or significantly more costly than DUG watches. As far as I know, DUG offers some of the most affordable watches with 'Glashütte' on the dial. The only exception might be Union Glashütte - a lesser-known brand from the Swatch group (which also includes Glashütte Original).

Design and Range of DUG Purist

DUG designs are created by the same person who designs many models for Laco - another German manufacturer of attractive and often affordable watches (although Laco is based in a different region of Germany). The main product of DUG is the Purist series, available in two versions: Typ 1 and Typ 2. The only difference between them is the dial design: Typ 1 features all baton hour markers, while Typ 2 alternates between Arabic numerals and batons. However, if you delve into the options, it turns out the choice is much wider.

DUG Purist Typ 1 and Typ 2 watch color variations

Each of the two dial types is offered in five different colors and with the option of a date window at the '6 o'clock' position or without it. Moreover, the Purist watches can be ordered on a leather strap or a steel bracelet matching the case. Thus, the question of the number of models - one, two, or much more - is not so important. Interestingly, different brands approach creating variety and simplicity in their offerings differently. DUG's approach can be called typically German, as many market colleagues have long been offering customers detailed customization options, up to the choice of movement decoration.

Pricing and Configurations

Fortunately, despite the variety, most DUG Purist Typ 1 and Typ 2 watches have the same price. The only factors affecting the cost are the presence of a date window, which adds about $100, and the choice of a steel bracelet instead of a leather strap, which also increases the price by $100. In my opinion, the DUG Purist is an interesting hybrid product offering a lot for its money. However, many watch enthusiasts, especially newcomers, may struggle to understand the market niche that DUG occupies. The point is, when wearing and directly interacting with the watches, you notice subtle details that are not obvious to those who haven't dealt with a wide range of models. I'll give two examples to illustrate.

Case Finish and Ergonomics

Firstly, the case finish. The Purist Typ 1 and Typ 2 watches have a stainless steel case with a diameter of 40 mm, a thickness just under 11 mm, and a lug-to-lug length of 47.5 mm. Water resistance is 100 meters without the need for a screw-down crown. I particularly like the crown shape - I call it a 'mini-aviator'. Above the dial is a slightly domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating, which handles reflections excellently. Regarding the finish, I tend to think that DUG uses traditional methods of hand-polishing and satin finishing rather than a fully automated process. While the brand's website doesn't mention this, the case finish, in my opinion, is closer to the level seen on more expensive German watches from Glashütte, rather than typical startups in this price segment. Newcomers are unlikely to notice the subtleties of the finish, but they are present.

Movement Decoration and Caliber Features

Secondly, the movement decoration. Through the transparent case back of the DUG Purist Typ 1 and Typ 2 watches, you can see the automatic Sellita SW400 caliber, made in Switzerland (although Switzerland and Germany are neighboring countries). The SW400 is a rarer and more advanced movement compared to the more common SW200. It operates at a frequency of 4 Hz and has a power reserve of about 40 hours. DUG decorates the movement with perlage on the bridges and blue steel screws - a traditional element of many high-end German movements. Additionally, the brand fits its own skeletonized gold-tone rotor, which they call the DUG 400. Visually, this looks very impressive through the Purist's case back. To date, finding such finishing in this price category, especially from the Glashütte region, is very difficult.

Dial and Functionality

The DUG Purist dials feature a black flange ring with white hour and minute markers, regardless of the main field color. The dial colors have fun, typically German names, such as blue - 'King’s Blue', and light beige with texture - 'Moon White'. The design is distinguished by simple efficiency, symmetry, and fine details characteristic of Glashütte traditions. The hour markers and hands are coated with a luminescent compound, and the hands themselves appear more interesting than those on most classic and conservative models like the Purist Typ 1 and Typ 2. As for the date, its presence is a matter of personal preference, as the window at '6 o'clock' does not disrupt the visual balance of the dial. For those annoyed by the additional 100 euro charge for a 'hole' in the dial, it should be noted that this sum is more related to the production of a custom date disk. Models with a date use specially designed disks whose color and font match the dial design.

Conclusion: DUG Brand Positioning and Prospects

To date, the DUG brand serves more as a framework for the product's value proposition. The brand itself is not so much about marketing, but about where buyers can get an interesting combination of modern efficient watch engineering and traditional craftsmanship from the famous Glashütte region, which today produces some of the best watches in the world. However, just visiting the DUG website makes it difficult to fully understand why the Purist watches are of interest to collectors. I believe this is where the expert community and specialized resources come to the rescue.

Ergonomics, Functionality, and Price

In terms of ergonomics, functionality, aesthetics, and cost, the DUG Purist Typ 1 and Typ 2 watches impress - provided you know what to look for. This makes the brand an ideal choice for 'in-the-know' connoisseurs who want to acquire an interesting, little-known product. The Purist style is conservative enough and versatile for daily wear. Personally, I would like to see more expressive design options, such as colorful or painted dials, but this will likely come later as the brand develops. Finally, despite the appeal of the steel bracelet, I found the buffalo leather strap with a quick-release system supplied with the DUG Purist Typ 1 surprisingly comfortable and soft.

The price of DUG Purist Typ 1 and Typ 2 watches starts at $1,499 USD. The model in the photo - P1DW-LS DUG Purist Typ 1 with a date - costs $1,599 USD.
