The partnership between IWC and the German company Mercedes-AMG is one of the longest-standing in the watch industry, ongoing since 2004. For its latest entry in this extensive brand partnership, IWC has gone far beyond a simple nod on the dial, substantially redesigning its signature pilot chronograph with a sleek monochrome racing look and new technical specifications. The new standard release IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition AMG moves beyond the usual limited-edition interconnected watches to create a piece that pushes the 43mm Pilot’s Chronograph line into the future, while providing a finely balanced blend of stylistic sophistication and aggressiveness.

The simple, utilitarian lines of the 43mm case of the IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition AMG are shared with the rest of IWC’s pilot series, including familiar traits like the narrow bezel, simple inverted pushers, and case sides. The Edition AMG shapes its own identity from this familiar form with the use of Grade 5 titanium. Lightweight and extremely durable, this fully bead-blasted alloy is perfect for combining aviation and automotive motifs. Although the color of Grade 5 titanium can vary significantly from brand to brand, IWC claims the alloy was designed to complement Mercedes-AMG’s Selenite Gray Magno matte metallic paint. In initial images, this titanium case appears a few shades lighter than the paint and on the lighter side of titanium overall, but the two gray tones should work together beautifully. The case is certainly tall, measuring 14.9mm, and its lack of mid-case contour or character lines will likely emphasize this height on the wrist. IWC completes this elemental case with an AMG-signed sapphire display caseback and a somewhat unimpressive 60 meters of water resistance.

In the dial of the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition AMG, IWC smoothly conveys the spirit of the German manufacturer without any overt references. The main dial surface is woven carbon fiber, a material almost synonymous with racing cars since the 1980s. This woven texture offers a satin pattern of lighter and darker gray shades in initial images, and should prove attractively dynamic in changing light. Combined with the silvery azurage of the chronograph subdials, this gives the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition AMG a low-contrast reverse panda dial look, highlighted by the use of a cold, slightly detached white tone for the rounded Arabic numerals and text on the dial. The low-contrast and reflective restraint extends to the dial hardware: the hands, date/day window frame, and subdial rings are executed in matte charcoal gray tones.

IWC introduces the in-house automatic chronograph movement 69385 to the 43mm Pilot’s Watch Chronograph line with the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition AMG. While the 6-9-12 subdial layout might mislead casual observers into mistaking this for the venerable Valjoux 7750 movement, the newly introduced 69385 is a manufacture design that moves its running seconds display to the 6 o'clock position instead of the traditional 9 o'clock position found on the 7750 and its derivatives. The 69385 movement also offers extensive decorative finishing, including dense perlage and circular striping, and uses a more precise column wheel chronograph actuation system as opposed to the cam-lever system utilized in the 7750 series movements. The performance of the 69385 is solid, offering a 46-hour power reserve at a frequency of 28,800 beats per hour. The brand finishes the IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition AMG with a textured black calfskin strap designed to mimic the woven pattern of the carbon fiber dial.

With a sense of restrained visual aggression and a fresh in-house movement, the IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition AMG should make a convincingly sporty addition to the brand’s extensive chronograph lineup. Despite the “Edition” nomenclature.
The IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition AMG is a permanent new addition to the brand's lineup, and is now available for pre-order through authorized dealers at a price of $9,100. For more information, visit the brand's website.
