Luminox Celebrates 35 Years with Heritage Collection

Luminox

Key Takeaways

  • Luminox celebrates 35 years with a Heritage Collection inspired by iconic military partnerships.
  • The collection reimagines classic models for sea, air, and land operations.
  • Luminox watches are known for their durability, night visibility, and advanced light technology.

When it comes to cool watches, Luminox should be one of the first brands that comes to mind.

Durable and lightweight thanks to CARBONOX carbon composite cases, this brand's tool watches remain popular among outdoor enthusiasts and military personnel for good reason - even the famous survival expert Bear Grylls has a series of watches from this brand. However, few partnerships in the watch world are as iconic and meaningful as the partnership between Luminox and the US Navy SEALs.

Over more than three decades, the watch company and the military special forces have teamed up to create countless watches. Now, in 2024, as Luminox turns 35, the American-born Swiss watch company has released three of its popular hero models from the past as part of the new Heritage Collection, covering the three territories where the Navy SEALs serve (sea, air, and land). Let's dive into...

Legendary Partnership

How Luminox and the Navy SEALs came together

It may seem unusual that such a new watch brand caught the attention of a respected and well-established organization. However, that’s exactly what happened in 1992 when Chief Nick North - Assistant Officer of the SEALs’ Research, Development, Test, and Evaluation Division - came across Luminox, which at the time had only been around for 3 years and was still gaining momentum. In 1994, they teamed up to create the original Navy SEAL watch, and the rest is history.

In an interview, North said: “Luminox was brand new when I stumbled upon them at a winter show in Utah. I asked Luminox representatives to provide samples of the original model 3001 for testing, and they agreed.”

Why Luminox?

Not your ordinary tool watches

It’s fair to wonder what exactly attracted North to Luminox over the older brands that had been proving their worth for decades. North - now retired and a devoted family man who still engages with the SEALs community - explained that “the original Luminox watches met the requirements for precise time, night vision, and dive depth.” Most importantly, of all the brands subjected to the rigorous tests conducted by Navy Special Warfare Group 1’s Research, Development, Test, and Evaluation Division, Luminox was the only brand that survived… Another evaluation of the watches was conducted in 2014, twenty years later. Once again, Luminox stood tall.”

During the evaluation North mentions, the watches were worn by SEALs during realistic training operations, crushed in a pot with water pressure, placed in ovens and freezers to simulate extreme desert and arctic temperatures.

Luminox Light Technology

Glow that doesn’t fade

Unlike other watches with luminous lume that can fade by the end of the night, Luminox Light Technology (LLT) is designed to last 25 years without fading. And this was a key deciding factor for the SEALs. As it turns out, it was this very technology that founded the watch brand in 1989. The founders wanted a luminous dial that would be visible at any time of the day, without dimming, whether during adventures, diving, or waiting.

While other illumination systems depend on external light sources, LLT operates on self-powered technology and is built into the Luminox watches themselves. The principle is that micro gas light tubes (borosilicate glass capsules) keep glowing, similar to tritium lume, but LLT is safe for humans and the environment.

Heritage SEA XS.3001.H.SET

Paying homage to the very first Navy SEAL model from 1994, the Heritage SEA XS.3001.H.Set updates the original while staying true to its principle and design. Updates include new scratch-resistant and anti-reflective sapphire glass, shorter LLT markers on the dial for better visibility, as well as a new enhanced movement - the quartz ETA F06.412 - for greater accuracy, reliability, shock resistance, and battery life (now 7 years). On the bezel of the 43mm black CARBONOX case, you’ll also notice the red number “30,” marking the years since the release of the Original Navy SEALs.

Heritage AIR XA.6442.H.SET

The second watch in this series is a pilot’s watch, the F-117 NIGHTHAWK® x Skunk Works® 6442.H, inspired by the original F-117 NIGHTHAWK® Stealth series, which Luminox was commissioned to create almost 25 years ago. Military pilots flying the legendary stealth fighter from Edwards Air Force Base approached the watch company to create a watch specifically for them.

Created by Lockheed Martin’s Skunk Works® division, the F-117 NIGHTHAWK® became the world’s first operational radar-evading aircraft when it went into production in the late 80s. The updated watches, released for Luminox’s 35th anniversary, feature striking details like the Skunk Works® logo at the bottom of the dial, which is invisible during the day and glows at night with Super-LumiNova technology. The Skunk Works® and Lockheed Martin logos are also engraved on the watch's case back. The F-117 NIGHTHAWK® watch also features hour markers on the bezel to be read in two different time zones - both for pilots and frequent flyers. The watch runs on a Swiss quartz Ronda 515 movement and comes in a 44mm black CARBONOX case adorned with a black Kevlar strap.

Heritage LAND XL.8825.H.SET

The Luminox RECON watches, developed in collaboration with former Swiss Army Security Force Sergeant Andrea Micheli to help professional military personnel with a simple yet effective land navigation tool, receive the new RECON Point Man 8825.H model. Unique features of the RECON watches include cardinal points on the inner ring, a tachymeter for measuring walking speed, as well as kilometer and mile markers on the dial. Additionally, the hour markers are in two different colors: yellow from 9 to 12, and white from 1 to 8.

The larger RECON Point Man watch, with a 45mm CARBONOX case, is named after the “spearhead” in the RECON unit - the person tasked with leading the patrol through hostile territory to the designated target. The watch is equipped with a Swiss quartz movement, a yellow seconds hand matching the countdown numbers, and a RECON logo at the bottom of the dial.

The 35th Anniversary Heritage Collection watches, priced from $545 to $645, are now available on the Luminox website.
