After a 35-year hiatus, the Dutch Grand Prix returned to Zandvoort in 2021.
Organizing such a large-scale event in a small seaside town seemed almost impossible. The track received necessary updates, and the initiative to use bicycles and shuttles from Amsterdam proved effective. On August 23, the final Dutch Grand Prix will take place in Zandvoort. To commemorate this event, TAG Heuer has released a limited edition of the Formula 1 Solargraph model in bright orange.
The Return of the Dutch Grand Prix and Festive Atmosphere
The five past races in the Netherlands have become a true spectacle. Fans created a sea of orange, and entertainment programs were organized around the track. Naturally, there were thrilling races, which have become a hallmark of Formula 1. Max Verstappen won the first three stages on his home track. It will be interesting to see if he can repeat his success at the last Grand Prix on Dutch asphalt. What watch will he wear this weekend? Most likely, it will be the new limited edition TAG Heuer Formula 1 Solargraph in orange.
Limited Editions of TAG Heuer Formula 1 Solargraph Zandvoort
Alongside the return of the Dutch Grand Prix to Zandvoort, the TAG Heuer Formula 1 model was revived last year. The case diameter increased from 35 mm to 38 mm, new color options appeared, and some versions were released in limited editions tied to specific stages. As the name suggests, the watch is now equipped with a solar quartz movement instead of a traditional battery. Recently, several pastel shades were added to the collection, and today - limited editions dedicated to Zandvoort.
Both limited editions of the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Zandvoort have the same 38 mm case with sandblasted finish, a thickness of 9.9 mm, and a lug-to-lug distance of 45.2 mm. You can choose a model with an orange strap or a three-row stainless steel bracelet (the latter is available online only).
Inside is the TH50-00 solar quartz movement by La Joux-Perret, which charges through the opaline gray dial. One minute of light is enough for the watch to run for a day. For a full power reserve of 10 months, about 40 hours of charging is required. However, with constant wear on the wrist, charging occurs automatically and requires no attention. If the watch remains in the dark and discharges, holding it under light for about ten seconds is enough to restart the mechanism. The expected lifespan of the movement is about 15 years before replacement.
Sea of Orange Fans - Inspiration for Design
The choice of color for the limited edition TAG Heuer Formula 1 Solargraph was obvious. Anyone who has been to the race or watched it on TV knows that the stands turn bright orange when fans await the start.
Interestingly, TAG Heuer did not have to create a completely new version of the Formula 1. A colleague kindly sent photos of the original bright orange TAG Heuer Formula 1 model from the 90s. Many of them are still available on the secondary market (for example, on eBay).
The new 38-mm TAG Heuer Formula 1 Solargraph nearly replicates the design of the 35-mm model from the 90s. The opaline gray dial with orange and red printing and red lacquered hands remain. Unlike previous versions, the hour markers are now embossed, and the dial inscription changed from "Professional 200 Meters Quartz" to "Formula 1 Solargraph Swiss Made." The TAG Heuer bio-polyimide resin bezel is still bright orange with white markings.
The steel case back is engraved with a checkered flag and the TAG Heuer logo, indicating that it is a limited edition, and water resistance of 100 meters.
Wearing the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Solargraph Zandvoort
Such a bright color is perfect for a model dedicated to the last Dutch Grand Prix. The orange bezel and minute scale catch the eye when checking the time, creating a contrast with the gray dial and case. If I had to choose, I would prefer the version with the orange strap - after all, I'm Dutch, why not highlight it fully? However, the version on the bracelet looks more versatile and suits different styles.
Overall, TAG Heuer has excellently updated the Formula 1. The 38 mm size is more convenient than the original 35 mm, and the solar movement makes the watch as practical as possible for daily use. Personally, I would like to see a perpetual calendar function for the date - this would make the watch even more "carefree." Nevertheless, for Formula 1 fans and those looking for a watch that reflects their passion, the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Solargraph is a great choice. I'm sure many Dutch collectors will want to get one of these limited Zandvoort editions.
Edition and Cost of the Limited Models
The limited editions of the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Zandvoort are priced at €2,100 for the model with a rubber strap. The version on the bracelet costs €2,200. 1,500 units with rubber straps and 1,000 on bracelets have been released. The latter is available exclusively online and is not sold in retail stores.
