In recent years, the Swiss independent brand Maurice de Mauriac has carved out a significant aesthetic niche with its signature red-tinted crystal designs. This unique deep red motif has been used in various chronograph models, but until now, this unique colored crystal has never been used in dive watches. The newest addition to the L2 series aims to change this by combining the clean and utilitarian aesthetics of divers with the vibrant blood-red color that the brand has made its own. Although the dramatic appearance may negatively impact underwater functionality, the new limited edition Maurice de Mauriac L2 Red Sea offers a truly unique take on the traditional diver's concept and helps support ocean conservation.

The Maurice de Mauriac L2 Red Sea model with a 42mm stainless steel case shares its overall design with other models in the L2 line, representing a pure functionalist interpretation of classic dive watches. The wide knurled bezel lacks an insert, instead featuring an engraved 15-minute scale, and the narrow tapering lugs have a pronounced curve. Apart from the gray gunmetal DLC coating, the fully matte case is almost devoid of adornments, with no protective elements around the large crown and simple vertical case sides without a chamfer.
Almost every element in the initial images serves a functional purpose, including the discreet helium release valve at 9 o'clock. Ironically, the only element that potentially contradicts this pure utilitarian design philosophy is the brand's signature red-tinted sapphire crystal. While this tinted crystal appears bold and striking in initial images, it may cause visibility issues when used underwater due to water absorbing light. Red light is the first color in the visible spectrum to be absorbed underwater, with red tones becoming noticeably dimmer and less vibrant at depths of just 15 feet.
Although a camera lens red filter (functionally very similar to the crystal on the L2 Red Sea) helps restore the appearance of red and orange tones in underwater photography, it can also drastically reduce the overall amount of light reaching the camera sensor, resulting in a generally dimmer image. While cameras can compensate for this light reduction with a slower shutter speed, wider lens aperture, or more sensitive ISO settings, unless the watch crystal fills the user's entire field of view, the eye is unlikely to compensate for the dimmer view when looking underwater.
Nevertheless, the brand claims that the watch has performed excellently in comprehensive underwater testing. Ignoring the potential issue with the crystal, the L2 Red Sea watch demonstrates solid performance, providing a reliable 300-meter dive depth.

Under the stylized red crystal, the dial of the Maurice de Mauriac L2 Red Sea is almost minimalist in its pure functional approach. Clean luminescent pencil hands and printed rectangular indices give the design a strict geometric look, further enhanced by the bold outer minute track. The dial text is surprisingly light, naturally drawing the user's attention to the functional elements, while the date window at the 3 o'clock position adds additional functionality without disrupting visual symmetry.

Inside the Maurice de Mauriac L2 Red Sea beats the automatic ETA 2824-2 movement. The 2824-2 movement is a longstanding tradition in the watch industry, used by many brands for almost four decades. Although the 2824-2 movement remains reliable and easy to service, its performance is beginning to show: it has a 38-hour power reserve at a frequency of 28,800 beats per hour. Maurice de Mauriac equips the L2 Red Sea model with two included straps. The more luxurious option is a rally strap with a large hole made of black rubber with an eye-catching red inner lining. For a more subdued look, a black NATO nylon strap with a red central stripe is also included.

The limited edition Maurice de Mauriac L2 Red Sea, featuring an unusual combination of ultra-functional design with stylized deep color accents, is perhaps the brand's most distinctive diver to date. Only 42 pieces of the Maurice de Mauriac L2 Red Sea will be produced, and 10 percent of the proceeds from each sale will go to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, aiding its efforts to preserve the world's ocean ecosystems. The Maurice de Mauriac L2 Red Sea is now available from authorized dealers at a price of 4,670 Swiss Francs. For more information, please visit the brand's website.
